My home

Summary:

I hope it warms your heart too

Work Text:

The soft rhythm of the rain against the cabin’s windows was the perfect backdrop to the warm glow of the fire. Inside, the flickering light created a sense of calm, the world outside quiet and far away.

Lyney had just finished preparing the hot cocoa — his special “magician’s brew,” as he liked to call it — and carried two mugs over to Aether, who was curled up on the couch, tightly wrapped in a blanket. Aether had been quiet all evening, the weight of everything pressing down on him. Lyney could feel it.

Sitting beside him, Lyney offered a mug with a teasing smile. “Here, for the traveler who can’t seem to rest.” He kissed Aether’s cold hand before slipping the mug into his grasp. The warmth from the cocoa was soothing, but Aether needed something more — the kind of warmth only Lyney could provide.

Aether’s hand lingered in Lyney’s grasp, feeling the contrast of his cold fingers against Lyney’s warmth. Lyney’s hand was gentle, comforting. It was enough to bring Aether some peace, but not enough to ease the quiet ache in his chest.

Lyney watched him, sensing the subtle shift in Aether’s mood, the way his gaze drifted, seeking something beyond just the drink.

“You’re cold,” Lyney murmured, his smile softening. “But you don’t have to stay cold, you know.”

Aether blinked, not realizing how much he needed comfort until now. He looked down at the blanket around his shoulders, then, without thinking, opened it just enough to make space beside him. “ would you like to join.. please? ” he said, his voice low but genuine.

Lyney’s eyes softened, a glimmer of tenderness passing through them. Without hesitation, he slid beside Aether, letting the blanket fall around them both. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The room felt smaller in the best way, the quiet cocoon of warmth a balm for their tired, unspoken thoughts.

Aether leaned into him, pressing gently against Lyney’s side. Lyney instinctively wrapped his arm around Aether, pulling him close. Aether’s hand found Lyney’s, their fingers intertwining as they settled into the warmth of the blanket, the firelight casting dancing shadows across their faces.

For a moment, there was only the storm outside and the steady beat of their hearts.

Lyney exhaled, breaking the silence with a soft sigh. “You know, I always thought I needed to be… well, a showman, to be loved. I used to think dazzling people and keeping them at arm’s length was the only way to keep them interested.”

Aether turned his head, meeting Lyney’s eyes. “You don’t need to dazzle me, Lyney.” His voice was steady, sincere. “I’m already yours.”

Lyney’s breath caught, his smile softening. He leaned into Aether’s touch, feeling lighter from the vulnerability in his words. “I always thought I had to be perfect for others. But with you… I don’t have to pretend, do I?”

Aether shook his head, his thumb brushing over Lyney’s hand. “No pretending. Just be you.”

Lyney leaned in, resting his forehead against Aether’s, closing his eyes for a brief moment, savoring Aether’s presence. “I guess it’s a good thing I’ve got you, then. Because I’m not sure I know how to be anything else anymore.” He chuckled softly, his voice warm and genuine, free of teasing bravado. “I think you’ve made me forget how to be the showman.”

Aether smiled, a quiet, contented expression that made the moment feel like everything was right. “I think I prefer you like this. Just… here with me..honest and real..”

The fire crackled softly, casting flickers of light across the room. Aether rested his head against Lyney’s chest, fingers still tangled with his. For a moment, the world outside seemed to disappear. The storm, the weight pressing on him, all felt distant in this small, quiet space with Lyney’s warmth surrounding him.

Aether’s breath was steady, but his thoughts were not. He had always carried the weight of everything on his own, masking his needs beneath the guise of strength. For so long, he’d kept his heart guarded, never allowing anyone to truly hold him or comfort him. But now, with Lyney beside him, Aether felt something shift. It was a soft feeling, gentle but undeniable. He didn’t have to hide, didn’t have to pretend to be strong. Lyney’s presence was all he needed, and for the first time in a long while, Aether let himself be vulnerable.

“I never… learned how to rest on someone’s embrace before,” Aether’s voice broke the silence, soft and quiet. “I’ve always carried my burdens alone. I had to be strong for everyone .But with you, I don’t have to. I don’t have to keep pretending that I’m fine,or act stronger than I actually am .. and that I don’t need someone to just hold me.”

Lyney’s hand caressed the back of Aether’s head, pulling him in closer. “You don’t have to pretend with me,” Lyney murmured, his voice low and comforting. “I’m here, Aether. I’m here, and I want to hold you, to make sure you feel safe. You don’t have to carry everything on your own , you are a human and I would love to be your shelter ”

Aether’s chest tightened slightly, but it wasn’t from sadness. It was from relief, from the feeling of finally being able to breathe without the weight of expectations .
Aether smiled softly “ I think you already are .. lyney“
Lyney’s words were exactly what he needed to hear — what he had never allowed himself to ask for.

Aether shifted slightly, lifting his head to meet Lyney’s gaze. There was something raw in his eyes now, something he didn’t usually let others see. Vulnerability. Tenderness. His thumb traced the lines of Lyney’s hand, the gesture soft but meaningful.

“You’ve given me something I didn’t know I needed ” Aether whispered. “You’ve shown me that it’s okay to let someone else in. To rest. To be… me.”

Lyney smiled, full of affection and understanding. “You deserve that, Aether. You deserve to rest, to not carry the world alone. I’ll always be here, for however long you need me.”

Aether’s heart raced at the sincerity in Lyney’s words. There was no pretense, no games. Just Lyney, the real Lyney, here with him.

Slowly, instinctively, Aether closed the gap between them, his lips brushing against Lyney’s in a soft, tentative kiss. It was slow at first, a gentle exploration. But as soon as Aether felt the warmth of Lyney’s lips, he knew.

It wasn’t a kiss of longing or desire. It was a kiss of understanding, of comfort, of shared vulnerability. A kiss that said, “I’m here. I see you.”

Lyney deepened the kiss slightly, his hand cradling Aether’s cheek, pulling him even closer. Aether melted into the kiss, feeling everything — the warmth, the safety, the trust.

When they finally pulled away, neither of them moved far. Their foreheads rested against each other, breath mingling, and the silence between them was one of peaceful understanding. Aether smiled softly, a light blush on his cheeks, and whispered, “I’m glad it’s you.”

Lyney smiled back, his thumb brushing Aether’s cheek. “Me too,” he murmured. “Always you.”

They settled back into each other’s embrace, bodies fitting naturally beneath the blanket. The rain continued its lullaby, mixing with the steady rhythm of their hearts.

As they drifted off to sleep, wrapped in each other’s warmth, they knew they didn’t need anything else. They had found their peace, their comfort, in each other. And for once, they didn’t need to be anything but themselves.
