Summary
The only reason human-wolf hybrid Geralt wasn't put down immediately after the massacre at Blaviken Hybrid Fighting Ring was because hybrids are very valuable. And hey, surely they can sell him to someone who never heard of the massacre? Right? Nope. Everyone heard of the 'Butcher'. Everyone who is in the market for a basically human looking non-human who can fight really well, that is.
Geralt is about to be put down when an unscrupulous shop assistant decides to sell him to a naive young woman who really only wanted a big scary dog to protect her while she lives the dangerous life of a female musician travelling alone. After all, a mix of wolf and human is basically a dog, right? And what if she neglects to mention that Geralt is as sentient as any human? He'll have to play along if he doesn't want to die, and by the time he lashes out and kills his new owner ... well, it won't be the pet shop's problem anymore.
