Work Text:

Lucy walks into her classroom with an extra pep in her step. It’s field trip day and she had planned this one, so she knows that it’ll be great. Her best friend, Aaron Thorsen, is a police officer and is the person she coordinated everything with. It helps that Wade Grey is the Watch Commander and his wife, Luna, is Lucy’s boss. She teaches first graders and they’re very excited to go as well.

The kids come bouncing into the classroom, excited for their upcoming day. “Okay, settle down.” They’re all smiling widely at her. “Are we excited for our field trip today?” The kids cheer and she grins. “It’s going to be fun, but we need to remember our rules.”

Mila chimes in. “We need to listen.” Lucy nods.

“And we need to stay with you at all times.” Hayley says dramatically and Lucy giggles.

“Yes, you’re both correct. We also cannot touch anything unless they tell us it’s okay. There’s a lot of things we aren’t allowed to touch at a police station.” She smiles out. “Do we understand?”

“Yes Miss. Chen.” The class says together.

There’s a knock on the door and she sees Luna, the school's principal. She is joining them since her husband does work there. The other first grade class, which her best friend Zoe Anderson teaches, is coming along as well. “Are we all ready to go? The buses are here.”

Lucy smiles at her class and she really is lucky to have, mostly, a great group of students. “Yes we are. We need to be quiet as we walk since other children are learning.”

Zoe’s class is already waiting outside. There are two buses here to take the kids. It isn’t a long drive down to Mid-Wilshire and she can’t wait to see what has been planned. As soon as they arrive, she sees Wade waiting along with one cop named Jackson and she believes another detective named Angela. The kids file off the bus and Lucy makes sure they are partnered in two. “Listen to Sergeant Grey. He’s going to be in charge today.” The kids look at him excitedly and she isn’t sure that she’s ever heard them so quiet.

“Thank you, Miss. Chen. We are excited to have you here with us today. This is Officer West and Detective Lopez. We will split into two groups and show you the station. Are you ready?” The kids cheer excitedly.

“Officer West will show you around.” He looks at Lucy and she smiles softly.

The kids stay in line with the teacher helper, Ms. Juarez at the end. Officer West leads them inside. “We’ve planned some fun things for you. We are going to go to the garage where our police cars are kept. In the LAPD, we call them shops.” They follow him to the garage and their eyes light up. There’s a few officers there to help and they let every single student put the lights and sirens on. Coming here was a very smart decision. They are in there for an hour and the kids have been enjoying themselves.

“Okay.” Officer West claps his hands excitedly. “Who wants to get their fingerprints done?”

One little boy, Max, raises his hand and Jackson calls on him. “Can we get a mugshot taken?” He’s so serious and Lucy’s eyes go wide.

“Of course you can. We can do both.” Once again the kids cheer and Lucy is so glad the officers are being good sports. There are plenty of cops to help when she feels a presence. “I was wondering if I’d see my BFF’s face.” She smiles at Aaron.

“I had to come see the greatest first grader teacher there is. How did they rope Jackson into taking mugshots?” Lucy shakes her head and grins.

“He wants them to have fun and they are. Thanks for setting this up. The kids love it.”

She feels a tap and sees a few girls looking at her. They need the restroom so she leaves Celina in charge and takes them quickly. As she waits for them to finish, with her standing outside the door, her eyes see a man walking. He has on cargo pants and a tight shirt that says Metro. Holy crap. How does someone make cargo pants look so hot? She’s pulled back to reality by the girls finishing and she leads them back to where the others are. She turns around for another glimpse of the man and then chastises herself for even looking. It’s kind of hard not to though.

Once they’re finished with the fingerprints and pictures, they are brought to a room. Wade is standing there and he’s going to show them how to use some of the police gadgets. What Lucy doesn’t expect is to see the other man in cargo pants again.

“I hope you’re having fun.” Wade’s voice sounds through the room. “I have a special helper here today. This is Sergeant Tim Bradford.” He smiles softly at the kids and Lucy blushes when she catches herself staring again.

They start their demonstration when she hears a different voice. It’s Tim who’s speaking. “Okay, I need a few volunteers.” The kids all want to help and they will. He picks a few and shows them a few things. He’s so gentle with the kids even if he seems to put on a hard exterior. It’s very endearing. She can’t seem to keep her eyes off him, but she finally pulls away to observe the kids. They’re animatedly talking to Wade as well.

“You’re a good teacher Luce.” Aaron nudges her shoulder and she’s lucky to have him in her life.

“And you're a good cop.” It was rough at first, but he finished the FTO program and was now kicking ass. “I’m proud of you.”

“You know that I couldn’t do any of it without you.” Lucy blushes and catches her eyes landing on Tim once more. Aaron rolls his eyes.

“Yes, you could have.” She sees the kids laughing and smiling. Just when they couldn’t get any happier, they bring in the K9’s and the kids squeal. Lucy goes to take pictures of the kids so that she can share them with the parents.

Lucy stands towards the back. “Okay everyone. We are going to show you how to arrest someone.” Wade smirks at Jackson and he groans. The kids giggle. She feels someone next to her.

“Well hello.” The voice is deep and Lucy looks over at him.

“Thank you for entertaining the kids. They’re having a blast and you seem to be the highlight of their day.” He gave out plenty of unicorn stickers to the ones who wanted it.

“It’s not a problem. They’re good kids and even though they call me a grumpy cop, I’m really a nice guy.” Tim shrugs.

“It's a good thing that I don’t listen to what others say, Tim.” He smiles softly and the conversation has to stop when he’s called away.

The day at the station comes to an end and the kids don’t want to go. They had provided pizza for the kids and everything. Lucy sees Tim once more before leaving and she knows that he catches her staring. Finally, they head back to school and she’s glad there’s not much time left in the day.

The kids are bouncing out of their seats with excitement and she ends up giving them playtime until the bell rings. By three thirty, everyone has been picked up and she is tired. Celina laughs when she sits in her chair. “They suck the energy out of us, don’t they?”

“They do, but they’re lucky they’re cute.” Celina shakes her head. “It was a fun day today.”

“Oh yeah, it was. I also saw you staring at a certain cop.” Lucy goes red and throws a pen at her friend. “Hey I didn’t say it was wrong. Besides, I got someone’s number.”

Lucy’s jaw drops. “Who?”

“His name is Miles Penn. I met him during the fingerprint session. We’re going out tonight.” Lucy’s really happy for her friend.

“Go home, I’ll finish here.” Celina leaves and Lucy heads out not soon after. She’s almost outside when Luna catches her. “Hi Luna. Will you please thank Wade again for me?” She pulls out some papers. “And I have thank you cards from all the kids.”

“That’s sweet. You can tell him yourself.” Lucy looks up to see not only Wade, but Tim waiting. She rolls her eyes.

“Here you go Wade. Thank you again. They won’t ever forget today.” He hugs her.

Tim walks over and she smirks. “I caught you checking me out on more than one occasion today, Miss. Chen.”

Lucy starts laughing. “What can I say? You can wear the hell out of those cargo pants. I have a very hot fiancé.” He draws her in for a kiss.

“You failed to mention this field trip to me.” She slaps his chest. “What? I lost my train of thought. Pine finally saw you and knew why my brain seemingly broke for a few minutes.”

Lucy giggles. “I don’t know how I made your brain break when I’m not even wearing anything special.”

Tim pulls her closer. “You’re gorgeous and you always seem to leave me speechless. Now why don’t we head home?”

“That’s one of your best ideas yet.” She giggles.

A few weeks later, Lucy surprises her kids and brings Tim to the classroom. “Sergeant Timmy!” One kid yells and they all run to him.

“Is he your husband?” Mila asks with her hands on her hips. “Or do you just like like him?”

Lucy tries to hold her laughter back. “We are getting married soon. I like him a lot.”

Mila looks at Tim. “Be nice to her or you can deal with me.” She’s so serious and Tim doesn’t argue with her. They both try not to laugh. She enjoys him visiting especially when he wears his cargo pants. He surprises the kids more than once and is always the best part of their day.

”You know.” Lucy tells him one night after he once again visited the class.

“What?” Tim watches her through the mirror.

“You’re going to make a really great dad one of these days.” She grins and turns around. He smiles softly.

”Well, I’m just getting my practice in.” He tells her and then Lucy cups his cheek.

”It’s a good thing you have some time.” Her eyes are sparkling and Tim just knows. “I really can’t wait to see you become a dad.”
