Work Text:
Aaron is currently sitting at his desk trying to come up with a plan to wear short sleeves. Tim had said that his rookies never end up in short sleeves prior to the end of their rookie year, but Aaron couldn’t wait anymore. The summer is coming and he is already miserable. Tim is a good TO, maybe slightly rough around the edges, but he’s helped Aaron out a lot.
“Thorsen, why do you keep staring at me?” Tim’s voice brings him out of his thoughts.
“No reason sir.” He’s lying through his teeth and Tim stands there with his arms crossed. Aaron huffs out. “I think I can find a way to get you to let me wear short sleeves.”
Tim almost laughs, but he doesn’t. Although he isn’t surprised that Aaron is trying. “Oh really? And how would you do that?”
He knows that Tim has been single for a while. Earlier that day another woman asked him out and he turned her down. “I want to set you up on a date. It doesn’t need to be more than that, but if it’s successful, then I get to wear short sleeves. It can’t hurt to try.”
He can see Tim pondering his words. “You really think that you can set me up with someone?” He swears he sees a tinge of a smile cross Tim’s face.
Aaron shrugs his shoulders. “I think I have the perfect person to set you up with.” He just hopes that his best friend will forgive him. “If I lose, I’m sure you will choose a punishment.”
“Oh don’t worry, boot. You’ll be doing fifty push-ups behind the shop after every call.” Aaron gulps but he is feeling pretty confident that he will win.
“Yes sir.” Tim is still staring at him.
“When would this date be?” Aaron knows that after tomorrow they are both off for the next three days.
“In two days.” Aaron replies smoothly.
“It better be at Raveena. The steaks melt in your mouth and it has a variety of options.” Tim knows it’s expensive but it’ll be worth it.
They both finish their paperwork and head out for the nighy. Now Aaron has the task of asking his best friend for a favor. He knocks on her door just after seven that night with sushi, wine, and dessert.
“What trouble are you in Aaron?” Lucy has an amused look on her face. It’s been a long week and it’s only Wednesday.
“I missed you. Do I need a reason to visit?” She rolls her eyes and lets him in.
Aaron sorts their food and the conversation flows easily. “I know you’re here for something Aaron.” Her voice teases.
“I really did miss you, but I do have a favor.” Lucy is pretty curious. “I made a bet with my TO.” She raises her eyebrows because she’s heard stories about Tim. She wouldn’t mind getting to know him better. She has met him a few times when she came to visit Aaron at the station.
“Oh really? What did you bet on?” Lucy is very curious.
Aaron starts cleaning up their trash and she does not think that she’s ever seen him so nervous. “Well, I bet that I could set him up on one good date and then I could finally wear short sleeves if it’s successful.”
Lucy crosses her arms and she tries not to burst out laughing. “Oh my god, you did not.” She knows that Aaron is embarrassed.
“I did.” He scratches the back of his neck. “I will do anything for you if you say yes.”
The fact that he’s begging surprises her. It’s been hard to trust anyone ever since she broke up with her ex over a year ago. From what Aaron had said, Tim divorced a while ago and refuses to date. “I don’t know Aaron. I’ve sworn off dating and I don’t think he would want to date me.”
Aaron scrunches his face. “Anyone would be lucky to date you. You’re an incredible person.”
Lucy is still unsure. Chris was a dick and he wasn’t always kind. Tim is a cop though and she trusts Aaron. He would never set her up with someone who wasn’t good enough for her. “Okay, I will go on one date. I can’t make any promises though.”
Aaron pulls her in for a hug. “He’s not a bad guy, I promise. I know he has a tough exterior, but that man is just a big softy underneath it all.” Lucy smiles and thinks of Kojo, the dog she never got to take home because of where she lived. He reminded her of Tim.
“I trust you. Now will you serve dessert? You owe me the best.” Aaron laughs and pulls out her favorite. “Mmm, Rachel is very lucky to have you.” He’s been with her since college. She’s also become one of Lucy’s closest friends.
Aaron tells Tim the plans for the date the following day and that it’s with his friend Lucy. Tim’s met her a few times and he isn’t even mad about this. She seems different from a lot of other women and he’s almost giddy to go. He is still doubting his rookies taste, but it is a free meal. The following day goes as normal. He isn’t sure what to expect tonight, but he figures that one date can’t hurt him. By five, he’s dressed even though he doesn’t need to be there until six thirty. Of course, he ends up at the restaurant early, waiting for his date.
Tim is someone who believes if you’re on time you’re late, so he’s pleasantly surprised when Lucy arrives only two minutes after him. He stands up to greet her. “Hi Lucy.”
Lucy blushes when she sees Tim staring at her. She is wearing a dark blue dress that she knows makes her look damn good. “Hi Tim. It’s nice to see you.” He pulls her chair out. “Thank you.”
They both pull the menu out and figure out what to order fairly quickly. Tim’s pleasantly surprised to see her order a steak. “So Aaron told me that this date is part of a bet.” Lucy grins at Tim.
“Yeah, he did. I was nervous when he wanted to set me up, but he ended up choosing someone pretty great. By the way, you look beautiful Lucy.” She giggles.
”Thank you.” She blushes.
The conversation flows easily and Lucy knows that Aaron won’t be trying to watch them tonight. She begged Rachel to take him out so he could get out of his head. It wasn’t hard to convince her. “So how are your students?” Tim asks remembering that Lucy is a high school history teacher.
“They’re really good. My job is pretty rewarding. It’s hard some days, but I love it.” Tim’s heart warms. “You have a pretty intense job, but it sounds like you’re doing a lot of good.”
Tim shrugs because he just doesn’t take credit. “I enjoy being a cop. I have always enjoyed being a training officer but I did take the Sergeant's exam as well.” He’s surprised that he’s being so open with Lucy.
By the time dinner is done and Tim has paid, he really doesn’t want this date to end. “Can I take you somewhere?” Lucy bites her lip. “Although, I didn’t drive here, so can you take us somewhere special?”
“There’s nothing I’d rather do. Come on.” He leads her to his truck and she inputs the address. Once he arrives at the address she input and parks, he realizes it’s a quiet overlook of the city. Tim is thankful to have a blanket in his truck. They have also gotten their dessert to go.
Lucy leans back into Tim and she feels so at ease with him. “Can I confess something?”
“Of course.” Tim tells her.
“I’ve been scared to date since I broke up with my ex. When Aaron said he wanted to set us up, I tried to play it cool, but I was nervous and excited. I saw you at the station and I’ve been wanting to find the courage to talk to you.”
Tim relaxes and she can feel it. “I feel the same way. I’ve been turning down any advances from other women because all I could picture is you. I barely know you, but there’s something about you that I just couldn’t forget.”
Lucy turns around and she cradles his face. “Trust me, I’m the best you will ever have.” She connects her lips to Tim’s and his brain just breaks. He can’t think properly and he really hopes that this isn’t a dream. “That was better than I could have ever imagined.” Lucy quietly says when she pulls away.
Tim holds her close and doesn’t want this moment to end. “You’re definitely the best I’ve ever had.” Once again, he can’t believe he’s saying this after one date.
Lucy turns around and they enjoy their dessert. “I think we should mess with Aaron.” She finally says.
“How?” Tim’s curiosity peaked.
“We should tell him that this date was unsuccessful and then we can date in secret. I love my best friend but he did set this up without asking first. It’s fun to mess with him sometimes.”
Tim is pretty surprised by her words but also proud. “I think that’s doable. I won’t make him do fifty push ups after every call.”
Lucy shakes her head laughing. “That’s kind of you.”
Their night is pretty perfect. The plan goes smoothly and Aaron tells Lucy he will make it up to her. She tells him it’s fine and it’s funny to see him grovel.
Being with Tim is easy, but hiding it might be becoming harder. When she found out Tim had Kojo, she burst into the happiest tears. She missed him so much.
They’ve now been together for a month now. She had just gone on summer break and couldn’t wait to see Tim more.
Tonight she had plans with Rachel and Aaron. Her phone goes off and she sees it’s from Rachel.
From Rachel:
Hey listen, Aaron and Tim had a sticky situation today. I’m at the hospital. They both seem to be okay, but we have to cancel our plans for tonight.
Lucy’s heart beats faster and she’s worried.
To Rachel:
Please let me know if you need anything and please send my love to Aaron and Tim.
Lucy dials Tim’s number and she can’t get him on the phone. She’s tried calling him ten times. That’s it. I’m going to see him. She knows that being a cop can be dangerous but right now she’s scared.
She runs into the ER and they point her to Tim’s room. She can hear him grumbling before she enters. Lucy makes herself known. “Hey, what are you doing here?” She hates that she has been crying. “Lucy, I’m fine.”
Lucy walks over and runs her thumb along his cheek and forehead where he has had stitches. “Rachel said you were hurt and you didn’t answer your phone. I’m sorry for just showing up.” He takes her hand and tugs her to sit on the bed.
“I’m sorry, my phone was kind of destroyed. I didn’t mean to worry you. I was trying to get out of here so that I could just come see you.” Tim kisses the top of her head.
“I know you’re a cop, but please try not to hurt yourself every week.” He had also been punched in the face the week before.
“I’ll do everything in my power not to. I have every reason to make it home every day.” Lucy rolls her eyes and rests her forehead against his.
“Good because I’ll kill you if you try to leave me.” He laughs and then remembers he has bruised ribs. “Sorry, I promise that I’ll take care of you.”
Tim cups her cheek and pulls her in for a kiss. They’re interrupted by voices clearing and turn to see Aaron and Rachel staring at them. “Uh, hi.” Lucy’s voice raises.
“Oh this is going to be a hell of an explanation.” Lucy stands up and puts her hands on her hips.
Aaron is standing there and she can see he’s sore, but not as bad as Tim. “Fine. I told you it wasn’t a good date, but that wasn’t true. It’s fun to mess with you. Payback is a bitch.”
Rachel is turned around and laughing. “Wow, I’m hurt.”
Lucy rolls her eyes. “Just remember that you decided to set us up.” Tim pulls her back on the bed.
“I’m happy for you two, but I’m wearing short sleeves when we go back to work.” Tim just agrees. “Oh, and I better be your man of honor when you two get married.”
Rachel and Aaron walk out leaving a stunned Tim and Lucy behind. “I mean, we all know it’ll happen.” The pain meds are kicking in. “I’ll marry you one day.”
She just chuckles and lays down with Tim. Aaron never let them live this down, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. A year and a half later, he stood by her side when they got married.
“You owe us.” Lucy tells Aaron after his speech that he made. She was messing with him.
“Don’t worry. You have an all expenses paid honeymoon. All I ask is to be godfather to your first baby.”
“Done.” Tim tells him. “We’ll see you all in a week.” He whisks his wife away.
“So should we start on making that first baby?” Lucy grins. Tim wastes no time in showing her exactly what he wanted. Going on the blind date was the best decision of their lives.
”There’s absolutely nothing I want more.” He growls out and pulls her to their room for the night. Life was better than either of them could have imagined.
