Work Text:

Mikey wasn’t supposed to come home so late. But with the combination of him and his boyfriend talking for so long, and getting lost on his way back home… he was about twenty-two minutes late.

Scratch that, twenty-three now.

He shudders as he steps through the entrance, the cold air of the subway nipping at his snout. He takes a deep breath, his hands gripping his bag as he walked.

Mikey checked the time again, 10:25.

The boy gritted his teeth, pulling at the hem of his skirt. Maybe his brothers weren’t awake at all, maybe they wouldn’t see him in his date outfit at all, and therefore, they wouldn’t have any questions about it.

That was Mikey’s hope, anyway.

But as he tiptoed through the hallway, he feels a pit in his stomach, then a few footsteps waking behind him. And against his better judgement, he kept walking.

Ahem .”

Mikey gulps, recognizing the gruff voice, he feels his stomach churn as turns around, “Hi…”

Leo is leaned against the doorway, while Donnie and Raph stand close. The snapper sighs, crossing his arms.

“Home late, I see,” He begins, “I guess we can do that, just come home whenever, you know, doesn’t matter.”

Leo butts in, “And you can change your outfit, too.”

“I—I’m sorry, we just got caught up—“

“Clearly,” Donnie interrupts, pulling out his phone, “I see here you were at the restaurant for around… three hours? That’s awfully long, ‘Angelo.”

Mikey stiffens, looking down.

“So… what’s with this?” Leo asks, looking the box turtle up and down.

Mikey feels his face get hot, tears begin to form in the corner of his eyes and his lip quivers. He tries to form an explanation, something quick and satisfying enough to get him out of this. He grips his bag, breathing heavily.

“I—I—“

“Oh, shit,” Leo buts in, whispering, “did y’all break up?”

“Oh thank God ,” Donnie groans.

Raph’s serious expression melts, walking towards Mikey. The snapper embraces him in a hug before kissing his head.

Leo however, is more focused on his twin’s comment, “What? I liked him!”

“I didn’t, he was really clingy, be glad you dumped him, Michael, there are plenty more—”

“We didn’t break up,” Mikey mumbles. “We just had had a little fight, no big deal.”

Raph releases his hold on Mikey, shifting his focus to rubbing his shell. Donnie and Leo look at eachother.

“Is that why you’re so upset?” The slider asks.

“Uh… kinda… I guess? I—I don’t know.”

Raph looks behind him, scanning the area before patting Mikey’s shell, guiding the smaller back to the living room. Donnie and Leo following suit. Mikey sniffles as he sinks into the couch, leaning on Raph’s arm.

Raph lets out a soft, ‘Aw,’ before speaking again, “What’s wrong then, baby?”

“I just… uh…” The box turtle mutters. “He always thinks my outfits are… weird… so I decided to change it up tonight to be a bit more… fun, I guess. That’s why I have the skirt and everything—“

“That skirt is far too short, by the way,” Donnie adds.

“What?! I think it’s fine,” Leo says. “Don’t listen to him, Mike.”

Scoff! Michael, you’re sixteen, that skirt barely goes past your fingertips.”

Mikey whines, “It’s already at my knees, Donnie!”

“But it has rips in it!”

Raph sighs, “Okay! We don’t need to discuss the skirt, that ain’t important right now.”

“Right, we should discuss his top.”

Leo rolled his eyes, “Donnie it’s fine!”

Mikey curled up against Raph’s figure, the snapper wrapped an arm around him before shushing the twins. Raph looks down, gesturing for Mikey to continue.

“Well uhm… the outfit was kind of the problem, he said it was weird and—and—I sort of… snapped at him after he kept commenting on it,” He mumbled, his brothers looked at him, Leo being the first to speak up.

“Well, we could kill him.”

“Thought ya’ said you liked him?” The softshell asks.

“Obviously not anymore!”

“Are you… wanting to break up with him?” Raph asks.

Mikey shrugs, “He’s super funny, a lot of the time, and he can be really nice… sometimes. I just get really angry with him at times, whenever I do something wrong, I’m really wrong. I always try to communicate with him but doesn’t really… do it back,” He nuzzles his head deeper into Raph’s side, “I just wish I didn’t always feel so bad after. I feel gross.”

Raph hugged him tighter, while Donnie went to the kitchen, seemingly to grab something for Mikey. While Leo shuffled over.

“Hey, that guys a loser, okay? You’ve communicated yourself to him and it’s up to him to do it back, and if he doesn’t… that’s not your fault, Angel.”

Mikey sniffled and nodded, “Thanks, I’m okay… I just thought that if he thought it was weird… then you all think it was weird, too.”

“Not at all, dear brother,” Donnie begins, walking in and setting a warm cup of tea on the table. “Besides the length of the skirt… I’d say you look very nice.”

God ,” Raph grumbles, “are you two still on the skirt thing?”

“I’m not a baby, Dee,” Mikey added.

“Close enough,” Donnie replied.

Mikey chuckled, then yawned, snuggling himself impossibly closer to Raph. The snapper sighs, kissing his cheek and churring above him. Leo smiles and hands the cup of tea to Mikey, watching as he takes it gently.

Donnie shuffles some things around, grumbling a bit before squealing.

Guys! Can we watch ‘Dance Moms’? I just found a DVD of it.”

Leo grins, flapping his hands and looking at the other two. “Oh! Please, please, please! We have to watch it!”

Raph looked down at Mikey, watching as he squirmed next to him. He looked back up at the twins, nodding.

The softshell beamed, “ Yes!

Mikey hummed as the others fiddled with the DVD player, Raph’s occasional churring and grumbles providing a nice background noise to the chaos. The box turtle smiled, he felt his eyes begin to droop and his head grow heavy — not even flinching as his oldest brother took his tea away.

Raph mumbled something about taking a nap, he hoped it was sincere, because Lord did he need one.
