“I had a last minute emergency meeting. Go ahead and rest, don’t wait up for me. I’ll still be home tonight.”
You had just let yourself into Zayne’s home, your heavy boots sitting in a heavy by the door. A sigh passed your lips as you stared down at your phone, typing out a reply and walking further into the living room. It had been awhile since you both met up longer than a short lunch between your missions or his surgeries and consultations. That was to be expected, you were both busy people; but it was inconvenient. As you wandered around the kitchen looking for a snack, your thumbs flew over the screen typing out a reply.
“Alright, be careful. :)”
Short, simple and to the point; just in case he didn’t have much time to read my reply. Naturally, you were not about to listen to him. Your own mission had dragged on much later than you expected as well and he probably assumed you had been waiting hours already. The plan was to meet up after our shifts finished and spend the long weekend together which is why you were making yourself at home at his place. You bit into an apple you found and leaned against the counter, collecting your thoughts. Tired and sore all you wanted to do right now was curl up in his arms and- Well, that wasn’t an option right now. With a shake of your head, you tossed the remaining core of the apple into the trash and stretched your arms up over your head. Since the man you needed was missing in action, a shower would have to do to ease your lingering tension.
Zayne’s bedroom was as neat as always;sometime you wondered if he even slept here sometimes if you weren’t here. A spare pair of pajamas and a few other articles of clothing were tucked in a drawer he had cleared out for you in his dresser (you had wondered where you left that shirt), so you took what you needed and headed to the bathroom. The hot water streamed down your sore and aching shoulders and you let yourself just stand there for far too long to just unwind. When the water started to run cold, you dragged yourself out; running a fluffy towel over your body and hair. He was probably going to scold you for not blow drying your hair and letting it drip in the cool night air but you didn’t really want to bother with the hassle if he wasn’t here to do it for you. Now cozy in warm pajamas, you flopped down onto his couch and checked your phone once again, just in case he wrote.
Nothing
Another sigh passed your lips and you set your phone down on the table. It was already late, what was another hour or two? The blank television stared back at you, your long limbs dangling over the edge of the couch as you considered your options. Maybe a game or two? There was plenty in his library of games that you had bought but hadn’t had time to visit yet. Playing anything without him felt wrong, but there was a few that were single player anyways. The two of you would take turns watching the other explore levels of open world games or compare high scores of arcade shooters. In the end, you chose a game that you had played semi-recently with him and settled back onto the couch with a controller in hand.
The speakers blared a light and cheery tune that accompanied the flashing bright colors of the retro style game that lit up the otherwise dim room. Your grip on the controller was limp, the game not really holding the attention of you tired brain.Your thoughts drifted elsewhere and the character you controlled drifted into a pit once more and one of the hearts at the top of the screen disappeared with a descending tone. As time went on, the repetitive gameplay and music made your eyelids grow heavy and the controller slip from your hands. You caught yourself a few times and straightened your posture in a futile attempt to stay awake just a little bit longer. Surely he would walk through the door at any minute….
“How did I know?” A voice suddenly rumbled in your ear and comforting hand stroked the top of your head. Your eyes fluttered open, you had no idea when they had truly closed for more than a few seconds, and you found Zayne crouching over you. A smile tugged at his lips and his hand slipped down to very gently pinch your cheek. “You’re so stubborn.” This caused your lips to form a sleepy pout and drew a quiet chuckle from him. Your mind was still too foggy with sleep to form a witty retort for your usual back and forth banter; instead you lifted your arms and held them open for him. You had been doing so for him to hug you but it seemed he took the gesture to mean something else. His eyebrow quirked up briefly but then his arms slipped around you, strong and familiar. But the he guided your arms to loop around his neck before his hands slipped down to your thighs to lift you up. Grunting quietly he adjusted his grip on you and your head tucked into the crook of his neck. He still smelled like th antiseptic and sterile hospital but underneath it all was the faintest scent of Jasmine; something that was unmistakably him.
“I’m too heavy.” You mumbled against his skin but he only hummed in reply; already carrying you towards the bedroom. Soon your world turned as you were gently placed down;once again staring up at the white ceiling. The bed was soft beneath you and an equally soft blanket was pulled over you up to your chin. Zayne’s face filled your vision once more, stroking your hair again and pressing the faintest of kisses to the crown of your head.
“I’ll be back in a moment.” He whispered into your hair and you nodded to let him know that you heard him even as your eyes drifted close once more. You could hear the faint rustling of clothes and what must have been the bathroom door closing before you must have nodded off again. Another blink and the bed was dipping under his weight as he slowly and carefully tried not to disturb you, but you were awake once again anyways. No fault of his, you were just determined to have even a few moments with him tonight; even if you were struggling to stay awake.
“You were stuck quite late tonight.” You mumbled softly. Realizing that you were still awake, he rolled onto his side and wrapped his arm around your waist. Zayne pulled you back against him with a sigh of contentment and wrapped himself further around you. He must have showered because you could feel his body warmer than usual and the ends of his hair still lightly damp against the pillow.
”Yes, it was a long day.” The words were drawn out in a heavy breath that fanned over the back of your neck, his lips following with a soft kiss that lingered there. It was more of a comfort for you both than anything needy. “You?” He replied and adjusted his hold on your waist so he could rub soothing circles to your hip over the fabric of your shirt.
”The same.”
”I see.” Both of you were running on fumes, clearly;Words running dry and eyes refusing to stay open much longer. Zayne still continued to nuzzle against the back of your neck, almost by instinct. There was no sound besides your breathing for a long moment before you disturbed the peace with whatever came to mind, just to draw out the moment a little longer.
”Zayne?” The sound he made in reply told you that he had very nearly been asleep. Your lips curled into a smile at how cute he had just sounded and you almost felt sorry for keeping him awake. “What do you want to do tomorrow?” More silence followed and for a moment you thought he really did fall asleep.
”Sounds like a question for tomorrow.”He sighed heavily but there was no real annoyance in his tone. In fact you could feel his lips curl against your skin as well.
”What if I want to go out for breakfast ?”That wasn’t something you actually had wanted to do, in fact it was the last thing you wanted to do but you couldn’t help but tease a little.
”You would sleep through your alarm and we wouldn’t arrive anywhere until well after lunch.” He teased right back to which you elbowed him lightly. Zayne lifted his head and propped himself on his elbow to look down at you and you rolled over enough to meet his gaze. “Unless that was a serious question,..” While he hid his emotions well, you could read him easily. Please say no. You looked thoughtful for a moment before laughing quietly and rolling back over. As much as you consider dragging out the joke a little longer, it felt too cruel to deprive the two of you sleep much longer.
”No, absolutely not.”
”Then go to sleep.” He huffed but bent forward to press a chaste kiss to your temple before settling back behind you. The blankets were pulled up a little higher and his arm wrapped more snuggly around you. The even breaths he took made yours fall in rhythm and your eyes grew heavy once more. His lips pressed a chaste kiss to your nape and he whispered something soft and tenderly but it was lost to you as you already were quickly asleep once more. All stress disappeared at the world narrowed down to you two and nothing else, finally able to rest.
