Chapter Text
Milk, oats, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt were combined in the saucepan before being brought to a boil by Luz, who constantly stirred the oats.
Meanwhile, her mother was occupied with the task of cutting triangles into the sides of strawberries and bananas on a green cutting board while humming a tune to herself.
After trimming the edges, Camila cut through the strawberries and bananas, resulting in hearts-shaped slices.
Once the oats had a tender texture, Luz carefully ladled a scoop into a bowl before she and Camila began adding the fruit pieces to the oatmeal.
To symbolize hair, three strawberry slices, and three banana slices were added to the oatmeal's top layer.
Luz positioned two cut strawberries below the hair to depict the eyes, while Camila positioned a banana slice at the center as the nose.
Their oatmeal face was almost finished. They only needed a mouth to complete it.
Walking over to the pantry, Luz pulled out an airtight container of sun-dried raisins that she and her mother happily set into the oatmeal, creating a smile wide enough to reach the strawberry eyes.
The raisins are also used to create eyelashes before Camila inserts a spoon into the bowl.
...
"... Thank you, Mamá and Luz," Alma told her mother and sister while in bed under a pink lightweight blanket, her voice quiet and strained as Camila served her her breakfast.
Luz gave her stepsister a warm smile. "Aw, of course, sis."
Camila directed her smile at Alma as well. "Oh, you're welcome, baby."
How she wished she could give her adorable daughter a kiss on her forehead.
Unfortunately, her little soul had a fever, so that couldn't happen.
Alma started to smile when she gazed down at her breakfast.
"Hey...," she sniffled.
A cheery look quickly flashed on her face, her eyes shining.
"You guys gave my oatmeal a face! And you even made it a girl!" Alma pointed out, noting the raisin eyelashes.
Both Camila and Luz nodded, chuckling at Alma's infectious enthusiasm as she blew on her porridge and began eating it.
"You'll start feeling better soon, baby. Your papá is bringing home your medicine."
Luz looked at her mother, leaning into her ear.
"Uh, Mamá..., are you sure it was a good idea to give Philip your car to pick up Alma's medicine?" she whispered.
"Oh, don't worry, mija. He'll be fine." Camila was cognizant of the fact that he was a licensed driver.
However, Luz's doubt remained despite her mother's reassuring smile.
...
Beardo Philip had just nonchalantly sped out of the drugstore parking lot with a cheerful closed-eye smile on his face, almost hitting a few people.
The bearded man was now making his way down the street, unaware of the fact that he was going beyond the speed limit.
After Philip casually bumps into the car that is in front of him, causing the vehicle to somersault and explode midair, the car radio begins playing a song.
This caused Philip to gleefully increase the volume.
During fun car rides, he and Alma would always sing along to upbeat songs on the radio.
When he doesn't stop at a red light, Philip begins to hear sirens and sees flashing lights in his rearview mirror.
'Oh, that must be the bisexual lighting that the kids of this generation are always raving about,' he thought to himself, utterly fascinated, as he took a sharp shortcut into someone's yard, losing the police as he finally arrived home.
