Work Text:
Today was Valentine's Day. Of course you didn't expect anything, since you didn't have a lover, and were too scared to confess to your crush. But it was quite annoying watching everyone else have a great day, while you were feeling incredibly lonely. Or you… were. Until Rui came along.
You were sitting peacefully on the school rooftop, eating lunch. Alone, as usual since you didn't have many friends and didn't want to bother Rui to sit with you. Suddenly, the noise of someone's footsteps coming up the stairs cut your thoughts off, making you quickly turn around with a questioning look in your eyes.
There Rui was. Your crush, Rui. Standing there with this goofy, yet oddly cute grin spread across his face from ear to ear. He has his hands behind his back, clearly holding something. But he was shaking, so maybe he was nervous?
You set your food down and walked over to Rui, standing just a couple feet in front of him. “What are you doing up here?” You looked curious for a couple moments, but that was quickly replaced with a smile. You were happy he came to visit you since you felt lonely at the moment.
Rui, gently swished himself side to side to try and calm his nerves, still with his hands behind his back. He suddenly..
got a bit serious. “Y/n. I have a gift for you.” Rui paused for a moment, taking a deep breath. Then something quite life changing happened.
Rui pulled out a bouquet of flowers from behind his back. The kind of flowers that were expensive, even put together and wrapped by a florist. He started to explain why he had these, but was shaking even worse now and stuttering, putting his head down with slight shame. “I got these for you, because I knew they were your favorite flowers. And I.. like you..?” He tried to make it seem like he wasn't sure, but in reality he was very sure, considering he had for so long.
Your eyes went wide and you stared at him in shock. You had too, for a very long time. So this was amazing. You slowly reached out, and took the flowers, a huge smile appearing on your face yet again. This wasn't how you expected the day to go, but it sure as hell was amazing.
Rui was slightly surprised, since he was so sure before he would get rejected. He started speaking again, quickly now, scared of what your next words would be. “Y/n. L-Look. I'm sorry this was sudden, I just.. had to express my-”
He was suddenly caught off guard as you stood up on the tips of your feet to give him a kiss. It was the first time either of you had a kiss, so you of course kept it to just a little peck. But it was enough to shut him up.
When you pulled away he just stood there, baffled. He tried to say something to you but he just stood still, while trying to awkwardly express his thoughts. But that didn't work. Instead, it came out as a bunch of jumbled garbage. He was incredibly flustered just by you doing that and decided that was enough embarrassment for now. He quickly turned around, mumbling something about “I'll text you later, I promise.” Before trying to scamper off.
Though, you grabbed him by his arm and spun him back around, looking up at him with a pleading look in your eyes. “Eat lunch with me. Please. I don't have anybody to eat lunch with and feel lonely.”
Rui thought about it for a second, not a peep of any words came out of his mouth. He was too scared to mess up his words. He nodded softly, then walked over to the bench near the edge of the rooftop, setting his backpack down and sitting next to where you were now.
You both pulled out your lunches from your bags, and started eating. Even if it was in silence, they both found it.. oddly calming.
Rui finally found the courage to speak about what just happened, gently reaching over to grab Y/n’s hand, holding it like it was fragile. He was still shaky and nervous. “So..” He spoke up hesitantly. “Is this like.. official? Or are you just messing with me?”
You look confused. Mess with him? No, you loved him dearly and would never. “I would never mess with you, no. And yes, I was being serious. It's official.” You spoke confidently, knowing you certainly wouldn't have wasted your first kiss on someone if you hadn't felt the same as they did.
Rui let out a sigh of relief. “That's good. I'm hoping you don't have any plans for later either..? I kinda have something set up for you at my house already..” He scratched the back of his neck nervously.
“I'm free.” You responded casually, as if it wasn't a big deal. But you knew your excitement was showing, even if it didn't express the amount of pure joy you were feeling inside. It was still visibly there. “Why? What's going on at your house?”
“You'll find out.” He responded, letting his voice sound as cheery and excited as he felt.
And you did find out.
A couple hours later, you and Rui had both walked home from school together. The walk wasn't long to his house, only about 15 minutes since he lived pretty close to the school. You had been over his house countless times, but this? This was different. Very different, considering the situation earlier. As you both arrived at his house, you took notice of the car in his driveway. Definitely his mom. But it's okay that she was home. You thought she was nice, and she always loved and welcomed you without a second thought.
You both walked through the door, holding hands. Rui's mother was in the kitchen washing dishes and greeted you with a small smile. She looked down at the intertwined hands, her smile going wider. She took this as a sign that you had said yes to Rui and that your day was well. She waved to the both of you, before turning back to what she was doing and left the two of you to do whatever Rui had planned.
He guided you around the house while covering your eyes with his hands, being careful to make sure you didn't run into anything and were fine on your way to what he had planned previously. He suddenly stopped you, taking his hands off your eyes. “Surprise!!!”
You opened your eyes to see the most amazing thing someone had done for you. There was a cute basket on the bed which you ran over to inspect, since it seemed to be filled with a lot of things. You sat down on Rui's bed, and the first thing you found in the basket was a set of matching pajamas for the both of you. You smiled and laughed a bit, honestly so grateful. You dug through the little basket some more to find some of your favorite candies.. and at the bottom was a small velvet box?
You opened the box out of curiosity, and found a necklace and earring set. The earrings were cute silver studs, simple. But the necklace almost made you tear up. It had a heart, and when you slid a part of the necklace out it had both of your initials on it. You immediately tied your hair up with a scrunchie on your wrist to make putting it on easier. You slid the earrings into the holes in your earlobes with no issue, then buckled the cute necklace around your neck.
Rui was also ecstatic, despite being the one gifting and not receiving. He was just happy that you felt appreciated. He took his set set of pajamas, and walked out of the room. You knew what that meant even though he hadn't said anything. So you did the same.
You changed into the cute set of pajamas, and just as you sat down on the bed Rui came back in and laid right next to you, giving you a hug. “I'm glad you liked everything. Are you happy now?” His words earned a small nod from you, as he didn't let go and instead pulled you to lay down with him.
Rui and you cuddled for a while, just innocently laying there together and basking in eachother presence. It was a great moment, especially after the two of you had been after each other for so long. And just before you fell asleep, you whispered those 3 words.
“I love you.”
And then you were out like a light in Rui's arms. The day was incredibly eventful, so he didn't blame you for falling asleep so fast. He instead just smiled and replied, even though you couldn't hear him.
“I love you too. Happy Valentine's Day, Y/n.’
