I'll be home with you

Summary:

There are little moments that Atsushi appreciates. Moments he will never tell anyone about. They're like dreams, and they are such wonderful, bright, dreams that there is a small dark black fear in his heart that one day he will wake up and find they had been nothing but that. Dreams, of a wonderful life, of a wonderful time, and of a wonderful place, meant just for him. That he had, perhaps, been created and born into this world for something more than just dying in a ditch.

Notes:

I'm aching something fierce for these stray dogs, so here's a drabble series of sweet moments...though some of them might just taste a bit bitter, too.

Chapter Text

0415--The satisfaction of a list

Atsushi hummed, pleased with the characters he’d scratched onto the scrap of paper he had asked for from Dazai. It was marked with bullet points all in a very straight line, and the tiger-boy felt that having everything organized so neatly together would make his job easier.

“Oh? Oh? What’s this?” A bandaged hand unceremoniously grasped the sheaf of paper from Atsushi and plucked it from view. He yanked backwards to look up and only saw the paper, translucent with the light so that his pencil scratches could still be read with some difficulties. Dazai’s unruly dark hair peppered out from behind.

“Haha! Atsushi-kun, you’re adorable! It’s like you’re five and being sent on your first trip.”

Atsushi flushed with mortification. “Dazai-san, please!” He swiveled around to face his mentor, face scrunched up in distress. “Like you’ve never written a list before!”

“Hmm,” Dazai hummed, agreeing, and the sheaf fell just enough to reveal his mischievous light eyes. “I have, but certainly not one with so much katakana on it!” Atsushi felt his ears burn and made a desperate jab to grab the paper. Dazai laughed and dangled the sheet out of reach.

Kunikida wandered over, disturbed by the noise. “Dazai,” he began gruffly, brows already drawn together. “It’s the middle of the workday, can you please refrain from making so much noise? It’s detrimental to- hey. Is that paper from my notebook?”

Successfully distracted by Kunikida’s belligerence, Atsushi snatched the frail paper from his mentor, only slightly miffed when a small tear marred its edge and ignored the strange ruffle Dazai gave his hair before running away from Kunikida. Atsushi scanned its contents again, double-checking that he had not forgotten anything he needed to buy.

Cultural References:
1. Dazai teases Atsushi on going on his first store trip because when kids are very young (around 5 or thereabouts) they tend to go on their first trip to a nearby store. They are normally given a list of exactly what to buy and exact change, and the cashier/worker is usually notified beforehand.
2. Hiragana is a simpler form of writing than Kanji and children normally begin to learn to write in it first.
