Master Juvah sensed something in her.
Ochette didn't understand what, but she figured it was the way her heart ached as she watched the malamaowl fly into the night, feeling every bit of its rejection in her very core, and how she cried for days because owls couldn't cry and it was so, so unfair, and so she had to carry the burden instead.
It's the way everything is a part of her when she hunts. She's the hunter, the prey, the forest, she kills and dies and is reborn all at once, and she and the island are one.
