They’re Finally Getting Married!

Summary:

Kon and Bart are finally getting married! Will it go according to plan? Or it will some world ending event interrupt it?

Work Text:

Kon felt the thrill of excitement rush through him as he looked at the date circled on the calendar. His wedding was now only one month away, which meant they just had to finalize the details and wait. Sometimes he’s amazed they made it this far.

Kon and Bart had been visiting Hawaii for a vacation. At least, that was the pretext. After a few days relaxing and playing the tourist, Kon had taken Bart for a walk along the various beaches, subtly guiding him towards the secluded beach. He had set it up meticulously, using an old wire frame to help vine plants grow, arranging shells and flowers into a stunning arch above a circle in the sand where large pieces of driftwood decorated with shells spelt out ‘Bart, Will you marry me?’

As they got closer and closer, Kon started to get nervous. What if he forgot to speak? What if they got distracted and never made it to the right spot? What if–

No, Kon shook the thoughts away. He’d just have to believe it would all work out in the end. Kon focused again on Bart, who had started excitedly talking about his new favourite comic book series, and felt the fond grin spread across his face, erasing the anxiety. He could listen to Bart talk like this for ages.

“Marry me.” He said, the words escaping his mouth before he realised.

“Okay!” Bart answered immediately, and that brilliant smile of his lit up his face and Kon’s world, as Kon froze in place. Bart continued on, walking ahead, as Kon’s brain faltered, his thoughts racing so quickly he couldn’t even decipher them. When he noticed the lack of Kon beside him, Bart raced back to Kon, head tilted to one side in concern.

After shaking himself from his thoughts, Kon blushed and said “Sorry, I just… I planned this whole proposal, just a few miles that way, and then I blurted it out too early–but you still said yes? Somehow? I just– I did not expect this to work out this way!” The pair laughed together, as Kon took the lead and showed Bart the place he had originally planned to use for the proposal, and Bart said yes all over again to Kon’s proposal.

Kon shook his head fondly at the memory, trying not to burst out laughing. The proposal may not have gone to plan, but he had to admit…it was perfect for the two of them. And now they finally had a moment to breathe, enjoy each other’s company, and leave the chaos of wedding planning for tomorrow. For tonight, they would watch their favourite movie. George of the Jungle, starring Brendan Fraser. They had been introduced to it by their Young Justice teammates during a team sleepover, and they loved it ever since. Slipping the disk into the DVD player, Kon settled down on the couch and called out to Bart, who had been off reading comics in another room.

“Hey, Lover, the show’s–”

Before he could finish his sentence, he felt the gust of wind as Bart raced to join him on the couch, bowl of popcorn in hand and a handful’s worth of red vines crammed in his mouth. With a laugh, Kon pressed the play button and leant back, and draped an arm comfortably over Bart’s shoulder as the opening credits began to roll.

After singing along to the opening song, and quoting the lines of the early part of the film which they had seen more than any other part of it, they started to truly relax. Usually, something would have called them away by now. More often than not, it was some sort of job for their hero selves. There had even been a couple of crises that called them and all the other heroes into action! But not today! They finally had a chance to relax and enjoy the movie to the fullest, in their matching Young Justice pajamas.

As Dela by Johnny Clegg started to play during the wedding reception scene, Kon rose, held out his hand to Bart and said “It dancing time! Ursula wanna dance?” With a laugh, Bart took his hand and the two started to imitate the dance that George had been doing. Kon always marveled at just how well Bart fit into his arms. It was almost as if the pair had been sculpted to fit together, forever boundas a perfect pair. Then, as George and Ursula were dancing together during their reception, and as Kon and Bart were happily losing themselves in the music and the dance, they heard the sound of sirens blaring through their neighbourhood. With a sigh and a shared glance, they raced off to find the source of the trouble.

Kon had been getting fitted for a wedding dress, in secret, one seemingly peaceful morning. He decided he would wear a suit to the ceremony and a dress to the reception, though he wanted the dress to be a surprise, so he made some excuse to Bart, he couldn’t remember what he said, and rushed off to the beautiful wedding dress shop. Using his super speed, Kon swiftly tried on every style of dress he could get his hands on, until he found the perfect style. It was an A-line dress, with a very flowy, dramatic skirt, and a crystal covered bodice. According to the store’s staff, the neckline was called a sweetheart neckline, and Kon loved the look of it. This particular dress also had some stunning flutter sleeves, which matched the beauty and drama of the skirt. As the staff worked to get him properly fitted for his chosen dress, Kon heard the sounds of a bank alarm. At first he ignored it, as the city had plenty of super speedy heroes that could step up and save the day. But as the staff finished taking their notes and initial measurements, Kon couldn’t ignore the ongoing alarm, so he apologised quickly and rushed out towards the sound of the alarm, changed his clothes at superspeed, and left the dress behind, draped on a nearby mannequin.

Just a few days after that first fitting, Kon had joined Bart for a cake tasting session. Bart had been rattling off all of his favourite cake flavours to the poor overwhelmed assistant baker, to go with their designated icing choice, when a loud crash caught their attention. The wall at the back of the kitchen area had been destroyed by a villain neither of them had recognised. With a cackle, the villain launched into a monologue.

“Now I have you, pesky heroes! I, the Angel of Darkness, shall finally have my revenge on the fools who flaunt their abilities just to show off and gain the public’s simpleminded adoration Little do they know how truly conceited you are! How little you actually care for them! How readily you would abandon them! How–” Mid monologue, as he gesticulated and moved about the cluttered space, this would-be supervillain tripped on his ridiculously oversized black cape, flailing his arms as he fell forward, knocking all sorts of baking supplies off of the counter, before finally landing face first in a batch of red cream cheese frosting.

In the echoing silence, Kon turned to Bart with a smirk, “Now is the part where we throw our heads back and laugh. Ready?”

“Ready!” Bart chirped. And, true to the quote, Bart and Kon threw their heads back and laughed in unison. Kon couldn’t resist any chance to quote this film, especially when such a perfect opportunity presented itself! He was pleased Bart was so willing to play along. It felt like proof he was marrying the right person. After all, what’s life or love without a good laugh from time to time?

Yet, despite all the chaos that is wedding planning and hero life, the pair had managed to have everything ready to go before the big day. They had even sorted out security, in the form of their fellow heroes, just in case something came up. As Bart slept, comfortably nestled in his arms, Kon gazed into the darkness of the room around them. His mind was frantically running through all the preparations and precautions they had made, trying to settle his nerves and reassure himself that they were ready for this.

Tomorrow was finally the day they would get to marry and, though he often played cool and unbothered to those around him, Kon was nervous. Their lives were rarely calm enough to throw a birthday party or watch a movie, let alone have a full wedding and reception uninterrupted! Bart shifted in his sleep, muttering something so quickly even Kon’s super hearing couldn’t translate the sounds into actual words. And just like that, Kon’s anxious thoughts vanished into the back of his mind. Kon gently brushed Bart’s hair out of his eyes, finally getting a sense of peace. Despite his chaotic nature, Kon found Bart a very grounding presence. Clutching Bart more closely, Kon distracted himself with thoughts of a flawless wedding and reception, finally closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.

Finally, the day of the wedding had arrived. Kon paced back and forth while waiting for the doors of the elegant ballroom they had chosen for the ceremony to open, as he took deep breaths to try and steady his nerves. He was both nervous and excited. This journey hadn’t been easy for either of them, and the lead up to the wedding had been especially chaotic, but Kon was very excited to finally marry the man of his dreams. As the doors began to open, Kon swiftly adjusted his stunning and incredibly soft red suit and turned to face the doors.

Through the growing gap, Kon could see the guests chatting amongst themselves, the impeccable decor, and their officiant standing at the ready. Tim Drake, dressed in a dark grey pinstripe suit and perfectly polished black dress shoes, stood at the podium. He had been chosen as both best man and the officiant. When Kon finally reached the podium, Tim smirked and said “So today’s the day. Took you long enough!” Kon laughed, some of the tension draining from his body, as he gave Tim a nudge. It may have been a joke, but it was still accurate.

Tim had been trying to tell Kon that his feelings for Bart were reciprocated for three years before Kon finally got the courage to ask Bart out, and now they were finally going to be officially, legally, married. Kon almost couldn’t believe it. Before he could say anything, he heard the sounds of the piano warming up. Bart would be arriving soon, and he couldn’t wait to see what he would look like. He didn’t have to wait long, as before the pianist could begin playing the wedding march, Bart zipped through the doors, down the aisle, and stopped swiftly at the podium, facing Kon with that ever stunning grin of his. From out of the corner of his eye, Kon could see Max Mercury facepalm and shake his head, though it looked like the older man was trying to hide a smile as well. That impulsive nature was part of what made Bart so loveable, after all.

Tim smirked and said “And that is why I warned you all to choose your outfits and accessories for today carefully!” The guests burst into laughter, but Kon was too focused on Bart. His golden eyes sparkled in the light of the chandelier, his gravity defying hair somehow a perfect mix of neat and disheveled, and his suit a beautiful shade of white with a subtle embroidered design on the jacket pocket which turned out to be a combination of their superhero symbols. The rest of the ceremony passed in a blur. Kon was sure he said ‘I do’ at the right time, but he honestly couldn’t remember. He was far too enamoured with Bart’s face and outfit of choice to hear what all was said. He only knew the ceremony had finished because Bart had cupped his face in his hands and pulled him into a kiss so spectacular that Kon leaned forward into Bart and lifted his right foot up in a flawless rendition of the romcom foot pop.

In a flash, Bart grabbed Kon’s hand and pulled him out of the room and back to their neighbouring dressing rooms. Kon, in a daze of pure joy, waved to Bart before heading into his dressing room to change for the reception. Pulling out his chosen wedding dress, Kon carefully got dressed. The dress was just as stunning as it had been when he first tried it on, only now it fit him like a glove. He hoped Bart would love it too. A knock on the door signaled him to step out and prepare to be announced. After checking his reflection one last time, Kon confidently strode out into the hall, and nearly collided with Bart who had rushed out of his own dressing room. Kon reached out to steady Bart and froze as he finally noticed Bart’s change of wardrobe. Like Kon, Bart had ditched his suit for a stunning wedding gown. His dress was a tea length dress with a halter top neckline, and red lace appliques in the design of intertwined sunflowers and daisies. Once again, Bart had chosen a design that showed their connection and their love. With a grin, Kon offered Bart his elbow, and the two strode into the ballroom as the DJ announced them as a married couple.

When the room had quieted down, the DJ queued up their chosen first dance song; Dela, by Johnny Clegg. Kon held out a hand to Bart, who took it and stepped up to join Kon in a classic Ballroom Dance stance. As the pair danced their carefully rehearsed steps, Kon couldn’t help but gaze lovingly at Bart, a soft smile on his face. Bart blinked up at him, tilted his head in that adorable way he always did, and said “What?”

Kon shrugged the shoulder that Bart’s hand was resting on and said “George just lucky, I guess!” With a laugh, Kon spun Bart before catching and maneuvering him into a dip. As the song continued, and the couple changed up their dance style to something more casual, the DJ silently signaled the crowd who gladly rose to join the blissfully oblivious couple. Kon was proud to call this the perfect wedding. Between this perfect day, and his perfect choice of partner, Kon couldn’t believe just how lucky he was.
