Wukong carefully maneuvered his way down the rocky slope towards the riverside. He had seen Macaque go this way and knew he'd be sunbathing on the sand or on their favorite tree. He jumped from the last ledge and landed clumsily, his paws sinking slightly into the sand and causing him to stumble. He shook himself before continuing across the sandy terrain. He walked slowly, the sand forcing him to take his time until he made it to the tree. Sticking out from around the tree was a black tail flicking every now and then. Wukong felt his heart warm at the sight, despite the fact he was standing in the shade. He slowly and quietly walked over, each step heightening his anxiety.
Once he'd made it around the tree, he found Macaque peacefully sleeping in the shade with sunlight dappling his scraggly fur. Wukong sat on his hind legs, content in the moment to just take in the rare sight. The black cat seemed so peaceful, something he never seemed when he was awake. His ear twitched as a slight breeze blew through and Wukong felt butterflies at the small gesture. He hesitantly stood up and stepped towards Macaque, who's eye cracked open and locked onto Wukong. He stopped in his tracks.
Neither cat made a move, both frozen, until Wukong took another step- and Macaque didn't make a move to stop him. Another step and Wukong was standing beside the dark cat. Macaque's tail flicked and he growled lowly, but Wukong stayed where he was. The monkey king slowly laid down, folding his legs underneath him and keeping an eye on Macaque. The growling had ceased, a positive sign to Wukong. He stayed still, looking away to the river and admiring the reflection of sunlight off the water. He wanted to stay here, to lay with Macaque, but he knew he had to let the other adjust to his presence first. Slow and steady would get him what he wanted with Macaque.
He turned back and found that Macaque's eye was closed and he was back to dozing contentedly. Wukong shifted, stretching out beside Macaque. No resistance from the darker cat. Wukong shifted closer. Nothing. Wukong hesitantly turned and laid his head on Macaque's stomach, curling up against him. As he laid his head down, his ear pressed to the other cat's ribs, he heard a quiet rumble coming from inside. His heart practically took flight at the sound. He purred quietly and his tail slid towards Macaque's, swooping it up and intertwining them. Macaque sighed deeply and the purring got louder. Both cats laid in the shade of the tree, sunlight peeking through the leaves and littering their coats with light patches.
