Work Text:
When Wels tried to knock he found that the apartment door was already open, all the better for him since he had his hands full with pastries and coffee. So he pushed the door open and made his way into the entryway without announcing himself, taking off his shoes before even saying a word.
“The door was unlocked. In what state did you get home when you managed that?”
From the dining room came Jevin’s voice, exhausted and pasty, as if he hadn’t spoken in hours.
“Believe it or not I didn’t have a drop. But I had to stay until the end and I haven’t slept a wink. So close the door and bring me that coffee I beg you.”
So Wels did, it had become tradition for the two of them to have breakfast together on Sunday morning. Jev and he had been friends since elementary school, both their families sharing powerful ties with the President. They had gone through the Academy and University together and had both chosen to become Capitol Escorts together.
The only things they hadn’t done together was turning to the rebel cause. Jevin had kept that secret for almost a decade before letting Wels into his plots, and that had happened because he had noticed something was off and had begged Jev to tell him what was going on.
Since then Wels had become an integral part of the People of the Hog. Not in an involved, risky way like Jevin had, but in a quiet, watching from the sideline way. Should anything happen to Jev he would be ready to take over as the principal Capitol connection for the rebellion.
“You were right, about Joe, by the way…”
Jev had downed half his cup before even starting to speak.
“They said no? That’s disappointing, but expected. She is still so young anyways. Give him time, they will come around.”
“Oh I’m sure they will, I’m not worried, I just had hoped we could get them all by the beginning of the Games.”
“With what miracle precisely? Excluding Ren who is still way too new anyways, we are missing like three more?”
“Two. I managed to corner Oli last week after one of the meetings and he was really excited to help out, maybe a bit too much…”
“The kid is a bit too excited about everything, to be fair. But it’s great! Still haven’t found a way to talk with Joey and Katherine then? What is it, don't they ever end up in poorly lit alleyways?”
“You joke but that is to this day the most effective way to recruit anyone, and no, apparently they like the light. And honestly I am struggling to approach them without it looking like I’m flirting.”
“At least you’re aware. It didn’t look great yesterday night with Joe, especially considering the state she came back in. At least three people asked me what you were doing.”
Jev sighed and downed the rest of his coffee, then went back to rifling through the tens of papers on his dining table.
“Shut up. We have work to get done.”
“I’m just saying, if they were so interested, why couldn’t they ask you?”
