Work Text:
“Martyn you really need to be more careful with what you say in front of the cameras, you are gonna get yourself killed.”
“And say what? That I am loving the Games, that my favourite part is watching kids die? Or maybe all the shining lights of the Capitol that you get when you win?”
“Don’t say anything. You are being reckless. You are gonna get us found out.”
“Us as a couple? Or us as the rebellion? Because I don’t believe you’d care if it was the latter.”
It wasn’t the first time he and Scott had fought over this, it had been a constant in the few years they had been dating, Scott had actually kissed him the first time to shut him up.
“Really? Really- You think I don’t care? That’s rich coming for you. I am doing my part, all you ever do is yell about how you hate your life. Well I am sorry but this life sucks and it will continue to suck, especially if you don't quit your acting out.”
“Acting out! I am acting out! What are you doing then, basking in the Capitol love? Enjoying all the pampering, all the fans you have after you? Ooh, Scott how you love the attention, I wonder how you are gonna live on once it’s over.”
“They are selling me.”
Scott had stopped shouting and his voice was now deadpan over the line. Martyn knew he should shut up at that point. It wasn’t something he had any right to argue over with him, but he was seeing red and the words poured out of him before he could control them.
“Like you couldn’t have done anything about that! It really isn’t an excuse. I managed to avoid it and even if I hadn’t, there is a difference between doing something against your will and leaning into it as much as possible. I really do wonder if you dislike it after all. You do love being the center of attention.”
As the silence grew longer, Martyn began to regret his words, he knew it wasn’t true. None of what he’d said was true, and he didn’t believe it either. Scott had a family to protect back in 8, so he couldn’t just refuse. And he had a part to play as a Capitol darling which he couldn’t avoid. As he took a breath to begin groveling and apologizing Scott spoke up.
“That’s it then. We’re done.”
Just like that he’d hung up. Martyn felt a sob crawl up his throat. He threw the phone at the wall. It had been a gift from Jevin, once he had learned of his secret relationship with Scott, a non bugged phone which allowed them to talk freely. It shattered on impact. He wouldn’t need it anymore. Then he sobbed, laying on the floor where he’d stood while they had been talking. It wasn’t more than ten minutes before that they’d said I love you to each other and now he’d never hear those words again.
