"This is weird," she grumbled.
"Oh, will you relax?" Jason nudged her. "Just enjoy it."
"I feel like I'm not supposed to be here. I mean, how many other kids are around when their own parents get married?"
"Well, your parents never do anything the normal way, do they?"
She sighed and turned to Dick, hoping for a more sympathetic response from her older brother-in-all-but-blood, but he was of course turned around in his seat to make eyes at Babs, who was sitting behind him.
"And considering your dad didn't even know you existed until you were nine years old..." Jason added.
Helena returned his nudge with considerably more force. "Don't mention that part."
"Ow! Fine." He rubbed his arm where she'd struck.
She rolled her eyes. "Oh come on, Robin, don't tell me you can't take a little nudge."
He scowled at her.
She had to admit that the ceremony was beautiful, and she cried a little bit as her parents spoke vows to each other that were twenty years in the making. She was happy for them, she really was, and she had wanted this to happen ever since she finally met her dad after he returned to Gotham seven years ago.
But it still felt awkward when her mom beckoned for her to join them afterwards, and she was included in the photographs that would be splashed across the front page of every tabloid in Gotham.
She drank wine at the reception, ignoring the disapproving looks from Alfred and Jim and Lee. Dick asked Babs to dance and she agreed, and so Helena and Jason were left sitting at the table as they watched Dick try to pull Babs closer mid-dance and Babs playfully resist. Dick had gotten less and less subtle about his crush over the years, and Helena knew that Batgirl's resistance was mostly just for show these days, as she was equally fond of him. That said, given that Jim and Lee and Barbara were all sitting nearby and undoubtedly watching their daughter/step-daughter dance, Helena highly doubted that tonight would be the night Dick finally got the kiss he had wanted for so long.
"Kitten." Her mom came up behind her, face all smiles as she leant down and kissed Helena's cheek. "Come and dance with us."
"Really?" Helena asked in a deadpan tone, not at all enthusiastic about the suggestion.
"Come on, love."
She sighed, but she certainly wasn't going to deny her parents tonight of all nights, so she got up and followed her mom onto the dance floor, where her dad was waiting, and danced with the pair of them. All around the room, more pictures were snapped, and her parents' glee radiated into her until she was also smiling and getting into the dancing.
Finally, she pulled away and interposed herself between Dick and Babs. "Mind if I cut in?" she asked her brother, not waiting for his response before she wrapped her arms around her oldest friend and whisked her away into a separate dance.
Babs giggled, dancing far more carelessly with her than she had with Nightwing. "Sorry to pull you away from your boyfriend," Helena teased.
"He's not my boyfriend."
"If you say so." Helena pulled her close, sticking her tongue out at Dick as Jason came up beside him and clapped a sympathetic hand on his shoulder.
"It's really nice to see your parents so happy."
"It is, isn't it?" Her parents were now sharing another intimate dance, staring into each other's eyes.
"And it's cool that you'll get to remember it, I think. I mean, how many others have memories of their own parents' wedding?"
"Not many, for good reason."
Babs shrugged. "I think you'll appreciate this, someday."
Helena rolled her eyes. "Yes, oh wise seventeen-year-old."
Babs giggled.
Before long, Dick and Jason approached, and the four of them all danced together. Barbara joined them, followed shortly by Jim and Lee, and then Babs was pulled away by her three parents and Helena stood between her brothers, watching her parents be happy and in love.
"Yeah," she decided, "I guess I will appreciate remembering this."
