Work Text:

Hiccup was walking to the train station where he had just come from his parent's house. Ever since he and his girlfriend of 4 years Astrid had broken up after they had tried to make a long distance relationship work but it couldn't he hadn't been the same. He couldn't grasp a relationship since then maybe a couple flings but nothing lasted. Nothing could last when he only remembered her. Whenever he kissed their necks he just thought of her and how she would giggle whenever he did so. It clouded his thoughts so much he couldn't move on and he stopped going on dates.

Especially when the last time he had been going to his parents he looked across the tracks to see her again. She was as beautiful as the last time he had seen her. She was laughing. It hurt him that she wasn't laughing with him or at a joke he had made, but she was laughing with another man.

He didn't want to break up that day but he was going to travel the world with his engineering job and she was gonna become a professional soccer player it wouldn't work no matter how hard they had both wanted it to. By the time Astrid had turned her head across the tracks to the opposite stop a train had come past taking whoever had their eyes on her with them.

Hiccup was trying to get over her talking to other people but it never worked. He hadnt found his person he figured that Astrid was the one that got away and he would never find anyone that amounted to her. Hiccup had always thought that maybe one day she would come back to him maybe he was wrong. His days began to feel like a rinse repeat wake up, eat, work, movies and sleep as much as he hated it he had nothing else going for him to help him change the routine. As he waited on the tracks blasting to whatever song his playlist offered into his ears. He looked up at the time of the next train 3 minutes. It wasn't like he was in a rush other than to get home feed his cat and best friend then get to bed watching whatever random show Netflix offered him.

He then felt a ball nudge the side of his left prosthetic it interrupted his train of thought, he took a headphone off his ear and let it dangle looking down at the ball which was moving closer to the edge of the platform. He stopped it from falling any closer to the edge and ending up in place where no one could get it. Hiccup picked up the ball looking to his left to see a little girl, he kneeled down giving her a warm smile. As he handed her the ball the way the girls blue eyes glowed and squinted slightly as she smiled.

All the memories of her rushed him almost knocking him over. Her eyes and the way they would squint whenever she smiled at him. Hiccups breath hitched as he looked at the eyes of this girl and how much they reminded him of his love.

The day Astrid bumped into him in school and how she was rude to him which confused Hiccup at the time. The next day she came up to him not being able to sleep knowing how she took out her anger on someone who hadn't done anything to her. She went straight up to him apologising and how she was just upset and didn't mean to take it out on him. They had become friends and slowly but surely become closer and closer until she kissed him once when he was over at her house while her parents were at her grandparents for the weekend. He had frantically apologised before she interrupted him kissing him telling him how she had been waiting when he would finally man up. Hiccup had laughed as he pulled her towards him kissing her again. From that day onwards they had been a couple.

Hiccup was in an accident and had lost his leg from the knee down. He had been going through a lot but Astrid made sure she was there for him every step of the way. Hiccup would go through breakdowns where he would just disappear into an endless cycle of not doing anything but she never let him slip away fully.

(Flashback)
'I cant imagine a world without you in it' Hiccup said his voice slightly cracking as he wrapped his arms around her kissing the top of her head.

'I cant imagine a world without you in it either' Astrid said back in her soft voice as she hugged him back tight as if he was gonna slip away.

From that day on he knew he would never love anyone the way he loved her.
He didn't want to learn another number.
He didn't want to learn another coffee order.
He didn't want to learn another pair of hands.
He didn't want to learn another pattern of  light, disappearing freckles.
He didn't want to learn another pair of eyes.
He didn't want to learn another scent.
He didn't love another person the way he loved her.
(Flashback End)

"Thank you sir" The girl said to him as she gave him a bright smile. The smile that had made his day years before.

"No problem" He said barely above a soft whisper but still audible even with the sound surrounding him.

"Come on Zephyr the trains coming soon" A voice said behind her. Hiccup swallowed a breath hearing that voice saying that name.

(Flashback)
'What would you name your child?' Hiccup said reading a deep question off an app he had downloaded.

'Its a weird name but Zephyr its cute for a girl' Astrid said to him with a smile as she looked at his eyes as he scrolled through the app.

'I dont think its weird" Hiccup turned off his phone putting it to the side. "I like it maybe we can name our girl Zephyr' Hiccup said looking up at her with a smile.

'Our girl? You think we were gonna make it that far in life' She teased with a smirk.

'I really do because i love you' He said looking at her with his soft green eyes before kissing her all over her face and neck making her laugh.
(Flashback End)

Hiccup knew that voice better then anyone and it took everything in him to not follow in the direction of it. He looked up at her for a second she wasnt with anyone maybe her husband was at home he looked back down at the girl who
was still smiling at him but he knew she had moved and that she deserved to be happy even if its not with him. "Be careful now Zephyr" He smiled as he heard his train approaching.

"I will, Mister!" The little girl said as she began to turn around running back to her mother holding her soccer ball in her hand.

His train had come loud and fast a door opening in front of him. He stepped on it walking over and sitting down in the empty seat. Maybe this was a sign for him to finally move on. He needed this to finally move on. Hiccup looked up at the ceiling of the train his eyes closed as he exhaled. Maybe in another life they worked out. But why not this one?

Astrid had looked at the man who had given her little girl her ball back stopping it from going into the tracks. Something about him and his piercing green eyes struck her with familiarity.

She knew those eyes.

She could never forget those beautiful green eyes. That once reminded her of the field she and him once had a picnic in. That once reminded her of the forest they got lost in together. That once reminded her of the tree they always sat at when they needed a break from the world but not each other.

Those eyes that belonged to her first love.
The eyes of the boy that had helped her no matter what.
The eyes of the boy that went to every game she had.
The eyes of the boy that ran to her house in the middle of the stormy night to comfort her when her parents had divorced.
The eyes of the boy that had once stolen her heart.

(Flashback)
'I love you Astrid Hofferson, with everything i have and i always will' Hiccup said as he held both her hands in his own.

'I know you do we dont have to be like them we have a differen-' she said as he cut her off kissing her deeply she not only heard him say he loved her she felt him love her.
(Flashback End)

She could never forget him. He was once hers and he would always remain in her heart.

Astrid thought he had to have had a girlfriend or a wife by now there was no way he couldn't. She had just recently left her husband but Hiccup, he was everything any girl could dream of. She would always regret the night she broke up with him. Maybe they could have worked it out. Maybe in another life they did work out. But why not this one?
