As Sweet as Sugar

Summary:

Gideon tries to surprise Kremy with breakfast.

Work Text:

Gideon snuck out of the room he was sharing with his husband. He had to practice all the stealth training Torbek had taught him if he wanted to leave here without the gator noticing.

Gideon froze when he heard Kremy shift and mumble. He waited, not daring to move in case the gator was awake. He was so convinced that the pregnancy pillow they had rigged up to act as a heated blanket would have worked to keep the warlock in bed.

Gideon couldn't bear it and glanced back. He quietly let out a breath as he took in his husband. Kremy had snuggled deeper into the Gideon dummy. So much so that Gideon was almost jealous of the damn pillow. He turned back to the door. He had to remember his goal.

He slowly opened their door. Twig had made sure to oil them so they wouldn't squeak. It seemed to work because the door was completely quiet. Gideon only pulled it open far enough for him to squeeze out.

After he was in the halls he carefully closed the door. Gideon waited a little for any sound from the room but heard nothing. He let out a sigh of relief and moved on to the next part of his plan. He quickly but quietly made his way downstairs. Gricko had made sure to get him all the ingredients needed and Twig had the kitchen set up in the Inn. Frost had gotten a recipe for Gideon that even he couldn’t fuck it up.

Gideon made his way into the kitchen and turned on the lights. As it lit up he noticed that everything was set up for him. All the bowls were out. The fruit washed and ready to be cut and the cutting board ready. He hurried to the sink and washed his hands thoroughly like Kremy had taught him.

He glanced around and debated the best place to start. It probably made the most sense to start with the strawberries. With a nod, Gideon moved to the cutting board. He took some cleaned strawberries out of their bowl and set them on the cutting board. His eyes scanned the counter and landed on Kremy’s personal knives. Those were the one’s he should use right? He couldn’t remember if Twig had mentioned any other knives. So with a shrug he reached out and took the handle of one of the knives.

“Gideon Nathanial Coal,” Kremy hissed from behind him, “What are you doing with my good knives?”

Gideon cursed under his breath and turned to his husband with a guilty look on his face. The alligator stood in the doorway to the kitchen. He was wearing his purple nightrobe and the matching slippers. Gideon would have thought he looked super cute if he didn’t look so pissed. His eyes were narrowed, his brown furried and his foot tapping.

“Morning, Darlin’,” Gideon greeted, nervously.

“Don’t you morning Darlin’ me,” Kremy hissed, “What are you up to?”

Gideon sighed in defeat. So much for the surprise. He hoped the truth wouldn’t make Kremy more agitated.

“You remember how we married for real like a month ago?” Gideon asked. This question softened Kremy’s gaze slightly. His eyes glanced up to the ring on Gideon’s horn. It matched the one on his ring finger. Of course Kremy remembered, it had been the best day of his life.

“Yes, Gid, I remember, what does that have to do with my good knives?” Kremy questioned. The sweet answer not derailing the alligator at all.

“Well…it’s our one month anniversary,” Gideon mumbled, “I was hoping to surprise you with breakfast in bed.”

The annoyance in Kremy’s eyes melted away to something much softer.

“Gid, you can’t cook,” Kremy reminded him.

“Frost found me a recipe that was simple enough for me,” Gideon explained, “Gricko also helped with the ingredients.”

“Was everyone involved?” Kremy asked in surprised. He was a little impressed that they had kept this a secret from him.

“Yeah…it was really important to me,” Gideon confessed, rubbing his neck shyly.

Kremy sighed and and unfolded his arms, “Alright Gid, I will let you continue.”

“You will?” Gideon asked excitedly. He was really looking forward to surprising Kremy.

“Yes, but I am staying here and keeping watch,” Kremy stated, pulling out a chair from under the table. He sat down and folded his legs in front of him.

“But what about the surprise?” Gideon asked him.

“I’m not letting you burn down the kitchen, Gid,” Kremy replied coolly.

Gideon sighed. He guessed it was better than nothing. He could probably hide the finally result from Kremy until he was ready.

“Alright, but you have to promise you won’t help unless there’s a fire,” Gideon replied, “I wanted to do this on my own.”

“I promise, Gid,” Kremy said, “I’ll only step in if there’s an emergency.”

Gideon nodded, satisfied with the answer. He then turned back to counter and reached for the knife again.

“Not my knives, Twig has knives in the drawer on your left,” Kremy instructed.

“Thank you, darlin,” Gideon said with an eyeroll. He quickly located the other knives and began his work.

It wasn’t often that Kremy got to see others at work in the kitchen. Part of it was because he preferred to cook meals himself. Part of it was because he was a control freak about his kitchen. However, he had to admit that is was a nice break. Gideon did not flow throught the kitchen like Kremy did. No he was more like a bull in an antique store.

However, Kremy found his movements strong but calculated. Matching how he was on9 the battlefield and in the bedroom. It was enthralling seeing him transverse something so alien to him. It was also very heartwarming that he had only done this for one person and it was Kremy. No other lay or partner had been cooked breakfast by Gideon Coal except for Kremy. That made him feel very special.

Gideon had finished the construction of the pastries he was making and put them in the oven at the temperature listed. As they baked he cleaned up the kitchen, making sure everything was put back where he found it. He could have asked Kremy to poof it all clean and away, but that would ruin the point of Gideon’s gesture. Kremy was not to lift a finger, except if it was moving food to his mouth.

Gideon had finished putting away the last knife when the oven beeped. He quickly turned to it and hurried to pull the finished pastries out. He placed two on a waiting plate. He carefully drizzled some honey on top. Then dusted them with powdered sugar. Lastly, he added a scoop of fresh berries to the plate. Gideon stood back and tooked in his work. The pastries were lopsided and the berries roughly chopped, but Gideon was proud of them.

He carefully picked up the plate and carried it to the table, setting it in front of Kremy. He also set a cloth napkin in the gator’s lap. He turned back to grab the coffee he had also ready, placing it next to the plate. Finally, he stepped back and took his own chair.

“Ta-dah,” Gideon said with a little flourish of his hands. Kremy’s eyes traveled from his husband’s face to the offered plate. On it sat two fresh baked beignets. They were messily drizzled with honey and powdered sugar. They were accompanied by a pile of chunkily cut fruit. Under normal circumstances, these pastries would never be up to Kremy’s standards, he might have even refused them. However, at the moment he found himself hankering for a beignet more than ever.

Gideon watched closely as Kremy delicately reached out and picked up one of the beignets. He lifted his napkin under it so no powdered sugar fell on his robe before taking a big bite. It was definitely chewy and a bit undercooked. However, Kremy thought they were delicious and quickly finished off the first one. He finished the second one just as fast and the fruit. Leaving just a dirty plate behind.

“Well?” Gideon asked almost shyly. Kremy turned and looked at him. He gave his husband a soft smile and kissed him softly.

“Thank you, Gid,” Kremy said, “They’re perfect.”
