The Breathe Project

Summary:

In a world overrun by the undead, Oscar—an isolated scavenger—meets Lando, a strong minded boy apart of a group of survivors.

Drawn together by danger and something deeper, Oscar and Lando form an unlikely bond. As threats close in, they must choose: keep running, or fight for freedom—and for each other.

listen if this does well hopefully it'll give me some motivation I just tend to hate my writing whoops

Chapter 1: the start

Chapter Text

That light was off when he left, he'd checked over his shoulder before leaving, but now a faint glow was coming from the window where Oscar had spent the last month just barely surviving, he quickly shouldered his back pack filled with not nearly as much as he'd hoped to find and began slowly making his way up the stairs. As he reached the door to the essentially abandoned office he could hear the faint sounds of rummaging. So whoever this was had been brave enough to go hunting through another person's supplies, dick. Oscar slammed the door open, chipped baseball bat in hand and hoping to at least shock the intruder but when he looked around he found the room empty, a small sound of confusion leaving his lips.

Then the cold press of something Oscar knew well against his throat, a knife. “Drop the bat” came the attackers voice, low and steady. “Alright mate” Oscar replied carefully, he released his grip on the bat and it clucked unhelpfully to the floor, only then was the knife lowered slowly from his throat “this your camp then?” the voice asked, somehow taking on a friendlier tone

Oscar turned slowly on his heel to meet the man's eyes, although maybe man was a stretch, the guy looked way younger than he'd expected him to, probably ages with Oscar, his eyes pierced into Oscar, shockingly blue, and he had a messy mop of brown curls on his head “yes it it” he said tensely “well fuck sorry mate” his accent slipping through

Oscar has to fight against his jaw dropping open at that, who apologies for stealing peoples stuff in this day and age? “Uhm.. yeah uh youre all good mate” Oscar states dumbly. At this the boy's mouth slips into a smile “i honestly thought the person here was dead but here you are” oscar just blinks at that “sorry? I think” , this makes the boy honest to god laugh, Oscar can't quite believe what he's seeing, ten seconds ago he had him at knife point and the guy was acting like they'd just tripped over one another.

A beat of silenced past between them and then the telltale sounds of the dead banging on the doors, so clearly Oscar had forgotten during his grand plan of defending his resources, that sound at that volume would attract the exact thing both him and his intruder were hiding from

Their eyes meet for a second “that sounds like a problem”

“Yeah not half,” Oscar snorted at the understatement briefly.

“Listen you might think I'm insane for this but do you want to join me? My group of survivors?” he hesitated for a second “you have some good shit here and well things are usually better in groups no?

Oscar once again, unhelpfully just blinks at the stranger but the sound of banging continually growing louder snaps his attention back “yeah fuck it” flicking his bat back into his hand, the strangers smile grew slightly at that “but how do we get out of here without getting bit preferably”
“Oh ive got us covered on that” a wink sent easily Oscar's way.
Turns out the plan was another seven stories up because once Oscar had managed to drag himself onto the roof after the other he was incredibly out of breath and carrying way more than intended with him.

“Whats the plan now we are entirely surrounded mate”

“You’ll see”

Oscar watched as he crossed over to the other side of the roof, the wind swirling fairly strongly now the night had fully set in. Oscar watched as he pulled a whistle out of his pocket and blew it as loud as possible, an ear defyingly loud screech filling the air.

Oscar swiftly made his way to the man's side

“Oh yeah i never caught your name”

“Its Oscar”

“Lando”

Lando smiled broadly “Do you trust me Oscar?”

“Not even remotely mate” oscar replied fighting to keep the nerves out his voice, because for one this Lando character had no right looking as pretty as he does now and two they could very much be about to die on this roof top

At that moment a wire snagged onto the side of the barrier from the neighbouring building, tied taught from the other end, Oscar looked over hoping to see the face of whoever had just successfully fished a sky scraper but was met with darkness

“Well you're about to get a crash course in stupid decisions" a snigger fell from landos lips before he grabbed oscar and swung.

Oscar was fairly certain he blacked out right then and there, a scream leaving his lips and wind howled through his ears

As Oscar blinked his vision clear it became obvious he was now on a floor of a parking lot, long abandoned like everywhere else in London.

“Lando!” came a chastising voice, southern “who the fuck is this?”

“Listen if id left him he’d have died George, plus i did kind of try to steal his stuff”

“Lando”
Once Oscar had managed to sit up and finally comprehend that Lando had in fact just swung them through the air like tarzan into the lower sections of a parking lot, he then took in the second stranger of the hour, George supposedly, he was tall, taller than lando, blonde hair swept back and shockingly tidy for a post apocalyptic world Oscar thought, in fact he almost looked untouched by grime, unlike lando and himself who were covered head to toe to old clothes and equipment, george by comparison just had a bag and a large hoodie draped over him.

“Dont give me that, not right now, ill talk to lewis ok?” Lando said after a sigh, dusting himself off before giving Oscar a hand up, which he gratefully took.

George scrubbed a hand over his face but seemingly taking that compromise, he then stuck out a hand to oscar “i’m george by the way” oscar for the third time today felt very out of his depth, shaking the man's hand

“Oscar”

“Right oscar i guess youre coming with us now”
