Max has always been a protector, it’s just who he is.
Ever since he was five years old and his mother placed a bundle of blankets in his arms with his tiny baby brother nestled inside, Max knew, deep down in a place no one could ever reach, that he was never going to let anything, or anyone, hurt him.
And he didn’t.
He stopped Lando from walking face-first into furniture when he first started toddling around. He hugged him close when nightmares clawed their way into his dreams. He checked under the bed for monsters and made-up silly voices in stories until Lando’s giggles filled the room like sunlight. That was their world, small, safe, full of warmth and laughter.

Summary
Evernox Academy had stood for hundreds of years, originally built to train and protect those born with magical abilities. Within its halls, generations had come and gone, each learning to harness gifts that marked them different from the rest of the world.
Abilities were varied there where telepaths who could hear thoughts like whispers in the wind, teleporters who vanished with a blink, healers whose hands could seal wounds and stop pain in seconds. There were those who could manipulate fire, water, air, and even the ground itself, others who walked unseen through crowds with invisibility, and a few who changed their very forms, shifting into animals with a shiver of magic.
But there was one ability that was whispered about more than praised.
Telekinesis.
The rarest of them all.
Those born with it could move objects with the power of their mind alone, bend the world to their will with a thought. But that strength came at a cost. Telekinesis didn’t just challenge the body, it tested the mind. Power like that came with consequences.

Summary
“It’s too late in the year for apples,” Max said, his voice softer now.
“But they like them,” Lando insisted, his words tight with stubbornness and a trace of guilt.
“But no one has them,” Max said, trying to keep the edge out of his voice. He glanced down at Lando’s leg as the younger stumbled to keep up. “How’s your leg?”
“Leave it, Max. I’m fine,” Lando muttered, not meeting his eyes.
Max didn’t push any further. He just nodded, though he watched Lando out of the corner of his eye, saw the way he favoured his left side, how every step seemed to pain him. Market days always took it out of him, the jostling crowds, the long walks, but Lando would never admit it.
Max raised his voice over the noise of the market as the rest of there group came into view. “I found him he was looking for apples!”
“It’s not the right season for apples,” George called back from where he was securing some logs to the back of his horse.
“But they like them,”

Seb sounded scared, Lando noticed. He actually sounded scared, and Lando had no clue why.
Lewis nodded and put a hand on his arm.
“Max, George and Alex are upstairs. Don’t worry about them, now. We have it under control. Just go.”
Seb left and all Lando could do was watch him leave.
“Am I dead?”
