Summary
A woman named Hana Yamada lives during Edo Period Japan and currently remains the unwed woman in her business oriented family. After a betrayal and the village's brewing gossip, she accepts a summons to work for Heiji Shindo for some time away. However, she was unaware that she had already caught the attention of Abijah Fowler, a foreign merchant with dealings between Japan and England. A man who legally, doesn't exist in Japan.
She is enamored by the strange feeling in her gut when she looks at him and he likes her spirit. Secrets remain hidden and reality is hard, yet somehow people change to better themselves and somehow they learn new ways of respecting each other. Heiji is suddenly sharp lipped and is slowly becoming more open to her friendship. Okiyama, Shindo's tight lipped 'giant' entertains her company and when she speaks to him, he actually talks back! Fowler who just wanted some life in his dull, dreary, mundane fortress, is surprised to see that what he has gained is far warmer than he warranted.
