Chapter Text

The grass sat unmoving, the wind hung unblowing, the waves in the distant sea had frozen like ice.

With a breath, Super Sonic opened his eyes that had shut.

Gold shone around him, the radiant light of hope. The Chaos Emeralds sparkled and twinkled before fading away. They settled lightly in the essence of Sonic’s very being, the part of him that burned with the power to make everything better.

And beside Sonic, the most lovely sight floated.

With his mouth hanging open, Super Silver stared at his hand, where a pure golden flow ran through his psychic marks instead of their usual cyan. His two back quills had turned up just like Sonic’s six did when turning Super, though Sonic had to laugh most at Silver’s mane becoming an even fluffier version of itself in bright yellow. But the most marvellous thing about Silver were his ruby red eyes, that slowly, ever so slowly moved up to meet Sonic’s amused gaze.

Though Sonic had not expected Silver to breathe out: “I’ve felt like this before.”

The speedster hummed curiously, darting a little circle around his pal and snorting at how Silver’s mane had gone from hanging against his back to standing up, just as proudly as his quills. Thanks, Sonic grinned to the Chaos Emeralds and their infinite power, for making this possible too. “Do you know when?” he responded, as Silver swallowed and shook his head.

“No, but… Sonic. You were there too. I’m sure of it. And we were Skyfires.”

“Just like I’m here now,” Sonic smiled back. And he loved Silver, and Silver loved him, and together, they could do anything.

Two sets of ruby eyes narrowed in determination, and both hedgehogs turned up their heads to the sky, that was coated in purple with stock-still clouds and all signs of life standing, laying, hanging completely unmoving.

Except for the Egg Phoenix, that came sailing over on the horizon.

The cockiest of smirks formed on Sonic’s face at Eggman’s hate-filled roars, that reached them in the tesseract of time long before anything else did. YOU CAN’T BE SUPER! YOU TOLD ME YOU ONLY HAD FOUR EMERALDS!!” the roar became clearer, as inside the Egg Phoenix’s chest a panel slid open. Eggman was beyond the glass wall it unveiled, and Sonic jolted. Behind him sat the Master Emerald, trapped and ensnared in endless wiring and its usual green light dulled and barely there..

But all that mattered in this one second was Silver, who grinned and answered: “I lied.”

And then he started laughing that laugh of joy Sonic had heard so rarely, and Sonic started laughing right along. Eggman’s silence that followed was somehow even more oppressive and loud than his rage, but Sonic cared not for it as Silver grabbed his hands and they spun silly circles around before rising to meet the madman’s red-flecked, scowl-filled face. “You got another backup plan for this, Eggman?” Sonic taunted, shooting him a wink while Silver huffed and cackled too.

For one second more, Eggman was just quiet.

And then, a cackle that would have made Sonic shiver if he hadn’t been Super rang out through the tesseract of time.

“Oh, poor Sonic. Of course I do! How quickly you forget what is powering my machine!” the mocking response got fired right back. “Tell me, what is the Master Emerald capable of?”

All Sonic’s joy and delight fell away into terse trepidation.

...Which had only little time to form, because Silver blinked and answered: “Powering machines,” in such a straightforward way that Sonic, despite his realisation, had to fight down another snort.

“...Yes,” followed from Eggman, slowly. “And?”

“It can make Angel Island float.”

And?!”

“Meh. I think that’s it.”

With a smile he couldn’t make as cheerful as he wanted, Sonic pressed a hand against his chest. Inside the very essence of having been able to turn Super, the Chaos Emeralds glowed with their infinite might…

While behind Eggman, the Master Emerald sat trapped, but just as powerful in a completely different way.

One that Sonic knew very well, and that made him swallow as he met Silver’s gaze. “The Master Emerald is capable of stopping the Chaos Emeralds.”

Pure horror crashed onto Silver’s expression.

“But we are using the Chaos Emeralds now!” the psychic yelled back, whole body flinching and head snapping up to the Egg Phoenix as Sonic nodded calmly.

And before the speedster could say anything else, now Eggman began laughing and laughing and laughing instead. “The servers are the seven Chaos!” got roared out amidst it. Bombastically Eggman turned around and threw up his hands and stretched his palms out to the Master Emerald. “Chaos is power, power is enriched by the heart! The controller is the one that unifies the chaos! Master Emerald, stop these two meddling hedgehogs right now! Let them be trapped in time forever!

At his first word spoken, Sonic and Silver had already blasted towards the robot.

...But their attacks did nothing. Golden psychokinesis shooting out of Silver’s hands harmlessly barrelled off the Egg Phoenix’s wings, tail feathers, talons, while Sonic merely got swatted away like a fly when he tried slamming into an appendage in turn. “Sonic!” Silver cried out, the tesseract of time groaning and Eggman cackling and the Egg Phoenix crooning with delight, and Sonic got pulled backwards while the Emeralds inside his powers sparked-

Although the Master Emerald didn’t really glow any more brightly than it had before Eggman’s chant.

With Silver’s wrist grabbed to make him stop moving, Sonic halted too.

And just floated.

And thought.

And felt the Emeralds’ powers course through him still, even stronger than before.

Of course, Sonic realised, and the grin that formed on his face was so bright it hurt despite being Super.

“...Sonic?” Silver repeated more quietly, eyes snapping between his own golden-hued arm and Sonic’s body. Also he had remained his lovely golden colouration, quills still turned upwards and mane still poofed up to the max. And nothing happened to either hedgehog: they kept floating in the frozen time stream and they kept being able to move and Silver’s voice rang out clear as always. “Why-?”

Whatever he’d wanted to say got overtaken by a reverberating roar of rage and hatred.

But it left Sonic wholly unbothered. “Seems like we got a marvellous win through playing semantics this time,” he winked back to Silver. “Because Eggman’s not unifying any chaos. With this wish, he would just be creating more of it. Of course the Master Emerald isn’t going to obey.”

And over the screaming and yelling that cascaded from the Egg Phoenix, Silver’s entire gaze lit up all over again.

“Thank you,” got whispered out, one gold-coated hand pressing against Sonic’s chest while the other curled against Silver’s own. Inside their very beings, the Emeralds sparkled back warmly, and Sonic could have sworn even the Master Emerald radiated tenderness at the very edge of his mind.

And they would get it back, and save everything.

“Silver, listen,” Sonic spoke up more urgently. “We do not have infinite time like this. Super forms are straining. Be careful, take a break if you must, and stay close to me.”

A pinky curled around his own. “Promise.”

“The only limits to a Super form are your imagination,” the speedster added, squaring up his shoulders with determination and grinning with fondness. “Let’s show Eggman what we’re made of, once and for all! Get ready to unfreeze the time stream!”

The Egg Phoenix shuddered.

And in one fell swoop, the world changed. Sonic blinked at how the frozen scene of the Zone he and Silver had ran to began moving instead, just like how it had when Eggman had trapped him in the time stream days before. Behind Sonic, the place he and Silver floated stretched out into a blurry singularity in the far distance; turning his head unveiled that same point, stretching out into infinity. The Egg Phoenix flapped its wings and roared, its echo reverberating endlessly-

And Silver yelled and pulled himself and Sonic away as a pink-purple portal sparked to life above them.

From it, two flaming talons came shooting down.

Sonic zipped sideways cleanly, while Silver threw up his hands. The talons creaked as they rammed into the psychic shield that blossomed from Silver’s fingertips as instantly as if it had always been there. With a snarl and a yell the psychic tensed, the talons struggling and clawing madly but locked in place. “Sonic!”

“I’m on it!” the speedster winked back, gaze darting around. The Egg Phoenix in the distance could move just as freely as Sonic and Silver could, and from it rained a cascade of missiles and fiery feathers that homed in on both hedgehogs in such numbers Sonic could barely make the robot behind them out. With a grand sweep Sonic got in their way, the attacks pulling away from Silver to lock in solely on Sonic instead, and the speedster laughed. “Throw us all around, Silver!”

A psychic grip that was cool at its very essence and radiated with the scorching warmth of determination beyond grasped Sonic and the sea of artillery both. The talons snapped threateningly as Silver’s hold on them dissipated…

Before one heaved a devastating creak as Sonic, curled into a tight ball, rammed right into it.

Eggman’s attacks rained down all over, Silver gracefully flinging them around amidst the explosions and chaos. The other talon had long gotten damaged, and it got torn cleanly in half as Sonic let Silver slam his body against it next. “There we go!” the speedster beamed, high-fiving Silver as he got tugged back. The psychic laughed as well, rubble from the talons and leftover remnants from the missiles and feathers gathered in one big ball that got flung at the Egg Phoenix with a lethal amount of disdain-

Except it harmlessly bounced off.

And Sonic startled at the sight of the very talons that had attacked them just now, sitting attached still to the underside of the robot bird.

Silver gasped, Sonic tensed. “Time stuff!” the speedster yelled out. It earned him a cackle from Eggman, who rubbed his hands with glee and stared hungrily into the time tesseract.

Two more pink-purple portals tore open: one beside Sonic, the other beside Silver.

With a dodge, Sonic jumped underneath the flaming wings that came swooping out. All the space around got covered in fire and the stench of burning metal and oil, though Sonic’s Super form was hardly affected by that. “They’re huge!” Silver yelled, shooting around like a gorgeous meteor. “Be careful!”

Intricately the wings flapped upwards. The feathers on them spread out, and Sonic snarled as they weaved together before laying flat, forming a huge press that came falling down right where he and Silver flew... but before it could strike, Silver had already grabbed Sonic’s hand, and the world shifted as they appeared above the attack instead.

“Huh. Can you teleport through space in a dimension of time?” Sonic chuckled, before laughing in full as he got harmlessly whacked.

Focus!”

Keeping a snort about Silver not being the best person at keeping his priorities straight in a fight to himself, Sonic got into position. In Silver’s hand psychokinesis crackled: a psychic knife that was as large as the whole of the Egg Phoenix got sent soaring down. It struck one wing smack-dab in the middle, cleaving and denting it as Eggman yelled with rage. With a wink Sonic dove down next, sticking out his tongue and zipping around all silly. “Nah nah! Can’t catch me!” he taunted the wings, that detached from each other and flapped threateningly. Waves of fire got sent his way that Sonic fled from, the one wing that had gotten damaged limply hanging with half its feathers bended and bungling-!

It still rose up as Sonic came close, the other wing in hot pursuit.

And a ball of fire consumed both as the damaged wing came searing down where Sonic had been, and rammed into its companion point-blank.

“Awesome!!” Silver yelled out above. Both wings burned and crackled, twitching before exploding into mere scraps. But Sonic merely grinned before shooting up and tearing Silver away, because another pink-purple portal opened immediately, more fire bursting through. The Egg Phoenix’s long tail lashed at them from it like a whip, feathers getting sent flying in a display that would be stunning if it hadn’t been trying to kill both hedgehogs.

SONIC! SILVER!” Eggman roared from the Egg Phoenix flapping to and fro in the distance. It… still contained all the parts that had been attacking, and Sonic grimaced. Eggman was up to something. More missiles rained down, the tail that still sat attached to the robot sent out even more feathers, fire coated the tesseract of time in burning oranges and reds and purple...

It created such a hectic scene that the feathers and missiles ran into each other far more than they threatened to get close to Sonic and Silver.

They could use that, Sonic smirked. The pink-purple portal fell shut as the robotic tail emerged in full, lashing its feathery appendages like a whip. And that meant…!

“Get that tail close to the robot,” Sonic ordered Silver, who nodded tersely in turn. With a snort and a cackle Sonic darted around, all the attacks homing in on him and causing endless explosions and eruptions of fire as they struck each other instead. In no time flat, he floated just a little bit below the Egg Phoenix’s main body... “Hey Eggman,” the speedster winked at the glass, where the madman sat ramming on buttons and pulling on levers and steering sticks in his little compartment. “So sad that your attacks don’t land, huh?”

Even through Eggman’s glasses and over the distance between him and Sonic, the speedster could make out the burning hatred in the man’s expression. “We’ll see about that,” got spat back, and Eggman’s hand rammed on a button so roughly Sonic could have sworn he heard it groan in agony.

The tail that sat attached to the robot still curled up.

Sonic didn’t even need to call out to Silver. The second the tail came rushing down in that whip-like attack, the psychic shoved the whole detached tail right in its path while Sonic ducked. Eggman roared in startled rage as the second tail got torn apart fully at the blow, both hedgehogs shooting away from the fires and explosions that followed. “Haha!” Silver whooped and hollered. “Take that!”

If Eggman had wanted to say something logical, it got swept up in the most nonsensical of irate yells and temper tantrums. Sonic just rolled his eyes at it with no small amount of amusement. Proudly Silver grinned as the detached tail of the Egg Phoenix burned away and the tail that was linked to the robot still flinched and flickered. Maybe they really were weakening the whole thing somehow, Sonic dared hope. With a deep focus he studied every single part of it-

Before a sense of alarm ran over his spines and made his nose tingle.

Sonic didn’t think, just acted. Silver cried out in shock as Sonic pushed him far away, gaze snapping up high-

To where the head and beak of the robot came shooting right at him.

Sonic got struck fully. In the distance, Silver shrieked. With a cry himself the speedster floundered, flailing through the time tesseract while the Emeralds jolted in shock. The Egg Phoenix roared, Eggman laughed-!

Warm hands grasped him and pulled him up.Sonic!” Silver gasped, a bubble of the most radiant psychic gold forming around them. The Egg Phoenix’s head seared right at it, beak snapping with sheer hatred and Silver staggering as it crashed into his shield. With a deep breath drawn Sonic focused his own powers to help steady it, shooting ruby red eyes a warm look.

“I’m okay.”

Don’t do that!” he got scolded, though Sonic figured Silver was more startled by the Egg Phoenix’s beak trying to bite its way through his bubble and Sonic’s action before than actually angry. “How will we defeat it?!”

Sonic pulled them both away from the robotic part attacking them first, then looked at the completely whole Egg Phoenix and the endless salvos of missiles and homing feathers raining from it next.

And a smile formed on his face as he responded: “We just do everything all at once.”

The way Silver’s ears perked up and a confident little grin formed on his face would be etched into Sonic’s mind for eternity.

Missiles rained around them that Silver grabbed with ease. Sonic shot towards the biggest one and kicked it lightly into place, while Silver made all the others tumble around and explode like fireworks with the Egg Phoenix and its head caught fully in the middle. The whole robot cried out in rage, the head that was still attached to it snapping forward to try and ram into Silver-

Who disappeared.

While Sonic kicked the missile into the back of the detached head.

And the very second the Egg Phoenix’ beak came down, instead of hitting either hedgehog, it struck its own head with a devastating blow.

Eggman roared with rage, the Egg Phoenix’s detached head screamed, the whole robot groaned from the blow, and fire raced through the tesseract of time as the detached head burned away into nothing.

And Sonic laughed, and Silver hollered in joy.

“You- You- YOU!!” Eggman shrieked from within the Egg Phoenix, banging his hands on and kicking his feet against the controls, the glass window, the walls, the machinery around, even the Master Emerald. Like a toddler, Sonic snorted to himself as he and Silver floated side-by-side. The whole robot would be destroyed from the inside out if Eggman kept this up.

...The whole robot, that still contained all the various parts that had attacked Sonic and Silver before. Its talons, wings, tail, head: they all sat attached to the Egg Phoenix like how the robot had looked from the first moment Sonic laid eyes on it, undented and undamaged.

A deep wariness prickled over Sonic’s spine.

Beside him, Silver bared his teeth. “Now what?! Come fight us like you mean it, Eggman!”

...The madman… halted.

His angry ranting and banging and kicking slowed, over a span of time that stretched out for what felt like aeons. His head moved up slowly, eyes resting on where Sonic and Silver hung in front of the Egg Phoenix. Then Eggman moved back to the Master Emerald, and Sonic frowned at the eerie quiet that enveloped everything. Eggman turned back anew…

The most maniacal of smiles had formed on his face.

“Now what?” got repeated altogether calmly. “Now nothing.”

A silence fell. In it, a sparkle of trepidation crawled over Sonic’s back, that even the radiant glow of his Super form could not suppress. “Nothing?” Silver retorted first, hands balling. “What do you mean!”

“Oh-ho-ho! Well, since you and Sonic were dumb enough to survive the attacks I must have sent backwards in time later, it leaves me with quite a conundrum,” Eggman burst loose. Almost mockingly he petted the Master Emerald, a broad gesture following through the compartment. “You see, the very moment I send out all the parts you fought off, it will leave my Egg Phoenix unprotected and ready for you and Sonic to destroy it. And that would mean I lose, you know?”

“Well, yeah,” Silver bristled back. “That’s what everyone wants! Just give up!”

Eggman’s laughter rang with hatred. “Never,” got hissed back. “You cannot hurt me, and I cannot hurt you in any way that matters… for now. Because eventually, you two rats being Super will end! And I will just wait until that happens! Until the end of time if I must!”

Despite the radiant glow of gold on his body and Silver snarling beside him, Sonic winced.

“You can’t wait that long! You’ll get bored in no time!” the psychic roared back, hands balling and powers sparking. But Sonic could only stare, because he knew Eggman was right.

And the man whooped and hollered like he knew it, too. “You truly think the Emeralds will be able to keep powering you for a billion, trillion, centillion, infinite years more?! A time so long it is beyond anyone’s comprehension but mine?! You’ll both be dead before you know it!”

The psychic blinked.

And he was warm from where he pressed against Sonic and raised his head to a glowing golden ear.

“Unless we cross all those years in the blink of an eye with our miracle,” got whispered into it.

In one heartbeat, the most radiant of smiles formed on Sonic’s face. Inside him, the Emeralds glowed with their might, all seven bursting forth into the tesseract of time around them. “Emeralds!” Sonic cried to them, hands stretched out to let their warmth run over. “Bring us to where time ends!”

Red, yellow, green, blue, purple, cyan, and white swirled until it was blinding.

And everything shifted.

A churning portal of blue enveloped everything, glowing as bright as Silver’s powers. For just a moment, Sonic could have sworn he could see the world beyond its pull as he fell forward in time: how the Zone changed from grass and nearby beaches to being overgrown with plants to getting swept away with water until that receded, how it grew warmer and warmer until the ground was nothing but scorched dirt first and then lava until the sun had come so close there was nothing left of the planet, how the universe itself seemed to spin and twist around on its axis. But it hurt his eyes and head, and thus Sonic grabbed Silver and turned both their gazes away in the singular moment it took to arrive in…

Coldness.

The glow of gold around Silver and Sonic and the seven colours of the Emeralds made for the only illumination, that cascaded over the Egg Phoenix. For there was nothing else: no earth below their feet, no sun and moon and stars in the sky, no cosmos stretching out even further.

The light of their Super forms lit up nothing, because there was nothing.

Alarms blared. Eggman roared with rage. The Egg Phoenix creaked and heaved. And from inside it, emerald green burst forth, an eight incandescence shining through the heat-died universe.

The Master Emerald glowed with judgement.

First the robot’s talons detached.

Then its wings burst loose.

Its flaming tail, bit by bit, got torn away from the robot’s body.

And its head with its sharp beak was final, as all parts disappeared in coiling portals of pink and purple.

“Now, Silver!” Sonic cried out.

Eggman stood no chance. Sonic flung himself at what was left of the Egg Phoenix, Silver shot towards the Master Emerald in Eggman’s compartment. The robot shrieked as Eggman did too, purple jumping and jolting from the inside-out. Rapidly the metal of the Egg Phoenix tore itself into cracks then gaps then shattered parts, the glow of time control around it sparking wildly-!

And in a swirling maelstrom of pink-purple that swallowed Eggman’s final cry with a deafening gasp, the robot disappeared.

The very moment it fell shut, the heat-died universe was quiet.

Sonic blinked, floated, drew a breath. Around him and Silver, the seven Chaos Emeralds turned slow circles of warmth and affection. And with a tender sparkling the Master Emerald sunk down in front of them, untouched and unharmed.

A laugh of sheer relief slipped past Sonic’s lips first.

Silver joined immediately, shooting closer to the Master Emerald and Sonic both. By instinct Sonic huddled against the warmth of the gemstone and his friend, while the Emeralds radiated delight in their midst. “You’re safe! You’re okay! We got you!” Silver beamed at the massive gemstone, hands shooting over to grasp it and hold it steady. Sonic joined him with a warm smile, pressing his forehead against the stone with a quiet mouthing of gratitude.

“Heh. I guess the Master Emerald didn’t want logicality to be violated all that much anymore.” Fondly Sonic rested his palm against their companion as well, that shone with warmth under his fingers.

It was the only source of anything all around them.

Sonic turned his head and looked. But no matter what he tried to determine, only blackness could be discerned in the beyond-freezing temperatures. The lights of him and Silver and the Emeralds lit up nothing at all, and Sonic quietly watched the scene of what the universe would become before smiling. “Silver, you’re just such a genius,” he murmured.

In a world where nothing existed anymore, Silver’s smile automatically became the most radiant and wonderful light to ever grace it.

And Sonic's ears perked right up as he looked at those lips and ran a finger over his own. If time existed no longer, maybe, just maybe…! “I could kiss you right now, heh.”

A curious look got sent his way. “Oh! You can,” the prompt response came-

Wherein Silver smushed his whole head into Sonic’s mouth and purred most adorably.

...Oh well, Sonic laughed to himself. Also the Emeralds twinkled with delight, he was sure of it. And thus Sonic lightly kissed Silver on his forehead like he had before, while gold-coated hands trailed over his chest, his sides, his back, his arms, and Silver curled his whole body into Sonic’s like the cold around them affected him-

Before humming more pensively.

“It’s funny,” followed in a quiet sort of way, as if Silver was on the brink of a huge realisation. “I always thought kissing was some weird human thing. But I like doing it with you.”

...Slowly, very slowly, Sonic blinked. “Weird human thing?”

“Yeah! I see humans kiss other humans on their lips sometimes. So, weird human thing.”

An eager flutter in Sonic’s stomach made his head snap right up.

And the Chaos Emeralds spun around them as if they knew, and the Master Emerald radiated a glow as if it did too. “Well,” the speedster brought up as suavely as he could and failing miserably at that, “we could… also. Kiss. On our lips.”

Radiant ruby eyes blinked at him slowly.

And silence stretched out as Silver opened his mouth, a little breath drawn…!

...Before he closed it. And then opened it anew, closed it anew, and opened it again, this time accompanied with a laugh that slipped out. “You know,” the psychic chuckled, and he’d never looked more handsome in the eagerness shining on his face that made sparks roll off Sonic’s fur. “I see no reason why we can’t. But I’ve never kissed anyone on their lips before, so-”

“Get over here,” Sonic interrupted.

His hands had shot up to grasp Silver long before he was finished speaking. Burning heat that left no marks on his palms pressed into it a second later as Silver snuggled his cheeks into them. Sonic pulled him closer, Silver reared up his face, their noses brushed together for just a moment-!

Silver’s lips were warm and soft, and not because he was Super.

Carefully Sonic leaned in, pressed closer, trailed a hand through Silver’s quills. Again their lips met, light at first but more frantic next, as joy radiated in Silver’s every movement and Sonic’s heart sung louder than it ever had before. “Love you,” the psychic purred, pressing their foreheads together as he drew away for a breath. “Thank you, so much. So much.”

“Always. And love you too,” Sonic whispered back. Perhaps there was something fitting in the idea that time would end with love; love and the radiant light of hope and people’s happiness and a wish to protect everything, encapsulated in the glow of gold that shone off his and Silver’s pelts…

Of Sonic’s, that was.

Under the speedster’s watchful eyes, Silver’s nose twitched. Ruby red eyes moved past the empty universe, before Silver’s head sunk against Sonic with a light sigh. “I’m tired,” got murmured out. “I’m really sleepy.”

And the gold on his fur was waning, Sonic saw.

With a grip of the softest, sturdiest, most protective iron Sonic clutched him close, so Silver would not slip away from him, so Silver would not fall into subzero nothingness unprotected and become nothing himself. “I’m here,” he whispered in a contently-drooping gold-and-grey ear.

“Can we go home…?”

“I’ll bring us back. Just rest.”

“But I want to help… Skyfires help people...”

Fondly Sonic laughed, because insisting to help still after he had already worked so hard to protect everyone and everything was simply so, so Silver. “And you did. You saved us all, over and over.”

“Everyone…”

The word stretched out into silence… before Silver’s eyes shut, and the happiest little smile Sonic had ever seen formed on his lips. “That’s a really big thing, to save everyone. I’m glad I could. That I could be a Skyfire, like you.”

Around them both, the Emeralds glowed. The Master Emerald hung steady, and Sonic cradled them all close to him with Silver in their midst. “You know how you said that, since I was your guest, you were supposed to take care of me?”

“Hmhm.”

“Let me take care of you now, alright?”

“Sonic… You’ve done nothing but,” Silver purred, voice growing more drowsy by the second. “And I really appreciate that.”

“Anything for my hero.”

“Your hero…” Silver responded; the last thing he said before burying his nose in Sonic’s shoulder and heaving a light breath, the golden light slowly flowing off his fur like quiet droplets of water.

Time to go home, Sonic smiled.

And as two shooting stars they fell backwards in time, a trail of glowing fire left behind in the time stream while Silver stayed safe in Sonic’s embrace, and as blues and greens got more form and shape, the softest look of safety and being cherished on Silver’s face amidst a scene of an unharmed Zone that rustled with life told Sonic they had truly, absolutely done it.

Notes:

It's here!! The big final boss fight!!!

I'm so, so enthusiastic about this chapter, you have no idea. I did a ton of research about the heat death of the universe and what it will be like (only 2 Kelvin and nothing around, apparently!) and how time is going to end and such. It's a bit of a philosophical question whether it will (I myself am not actually sure it ever will. Time will still pass even if there is nothing to experience it passing, right? Just like how the tree that falls still makes a noise even if no-one is around to hear it), but hey, this is a story about magic gemstones, so I got some leeway there :3 As for the heat death of the universe, to my understanding (according to Wikipedia) it might take up to 10^10^10^56 years for it to happen. I tried SO HARD to figure out how many zeroes are in that number. Got all my friends involved in it too, including an Actual Scientist and her scientist colleagues (who, to my knowledge, are not aware that I wanted this information for a Sonic the Hedgehog ship fanfic XD XD). The answers were "Big number", "It will take you the rest of your life to write out all these zeroes", and "There's a lot of uncertainty about whether it is even the right number or not". So that didn't help much, haha. Eggman just kept it at infinite years in the end, that solved the problem for me :3

I was dreading working on this chapter for two full weeks, but now I'm really happy with what it has become❤️ I hope you enjoyed too!!🍀

And for some optimism: there's a theory in cosmology that the heat death of the universe will just be the starting point for a new Big Bang, if I'm not mistaken. Which is, in my opinion, a nicer way to end and start things than to leave it at 2 K with nothing around anymore. I'd wanted to write Sonic and Silver starting a new Big Bang into this fic, but I have no idea how to imagine that works (the time tesseract broke my brain a bit already XD), so I left that out. But they could have if they wanted to!!🍀
