Work Text:
“Catch up, fellas!” Pearl yelled as she ran ahead of the rest, Grian and Scar (Who almost immediately tripped over) soon following after. An outsider might be concerned that they would run into the forest and encounter a bear, but Impulse knew of Pearl and Grian’s capability when it came to a fight, so he ignored it in favour of dealing with the supplies with Mumbo’s help
Thanks to the suggestion from Grian, all of the Boatem members were out on a camping trip. He had excitedly brought up the suggestion during recess, and all of them were immediately into the idea when they heard it.
(It was just a normal recess. Joel and Jimmy had both gotten in trouble and got stuck in the infirmary, so Grian decided that sitting with the Boatem members was a better choice then then the off white room.
“Hey, why dont we host a camping trip?”
He blurted it out without thinking. As soon as he finished, a multitude of “Yes!’ “Heck yeah!” “Why not?”s were thrown. And that’s how they ended up here)
Additionally, Scar had immediately suggested making matching bracelets while they were at it. Pearl eagerly agreed and volunteered to bring her bracelet making kit, and she would not take no for an answer, but its not like anyone would’ve said no.
Impulses parents, being the sweet hearts they were, immediately volunteered to drive them to the campsite. Sadly, they were only allowed to go to the campsite nearest Impulses, because who would trust teenagers to be alone in the forest? But all of them were fine with it. Afterall, it’s boatem! They could make anything work!
“Pearl, don’t go too far into the forest!” Impulse tired to yell, but Pearl was already too far away to hear him,
Dammit, he’s gonna have to catch Pearl later. . .
Sure, she could hope up a fight, but neither Scar nor Grian were good with directions, and he highly doubted Pearl could make it out with them alive.
As fast as they could (Which, wasn’t all that quick), Mumbo and Impulse had gathered the supplies to head to the base camp. They quickly got to setting up all the tents, with Impulse running off quite a few times to ensure Pearl didn’t run off into the forest, Scar didn’t get lost and injure himself, and Grian didn’t accidentally eat something poisonous. Additionally, Mumbo kept fiddling with the nails to get them to stick, so the\ progress was a bit slow.
After a few grueling minutes, the tents and small campfire was adjusted (there was a small area with an electronic fire and some seating, which removed the struggle of lighting and putting out the fire. Scar and Pearl had immediately grabbed the bracelet making kits as soon as the table was set up, which was quickly stopped by Impulse in order to avoid all the bits from spilling out. Grian also nearly crashed into a tree, where Mumbo went to check on him, leaving Impulse to set up the last few supplies alone.
(They had heard a loud crash and turned around to see a Grian fallen on the floor near the forest. A few feathers lay around him while he clutched his head. Mumbo was incredibly panicked and quickly ran over to him. And even though he knew Grian would be fine, who was Impulse to stop Mumbo, Grian’s best friend of all people, from checking on him?)
When they finally got done, Impulse breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, he could ignore the supplies and not worry about balancing the supplies with the other members.
In the time he took to set up the last tent, the other members had already gathered around the (unlit) campfire. On the table nearby, a small see through casing set, probably the bracelet materials. He stood up and headed over to where the rest were seated.
Impulse, with Scar and Mumbo seated nearby, walked over to Grian and Pearl in a corner, with Pearl whispering something into Grian’s ear, clearly discussing something. Pearl definitely saw him coming, because she immediately stopped as soon as Impulse came into the vicinity.
“Oh my god, I can’t wait to tell you guys campfire stories! Me and Grian have such good stories to tell you. I promise you won’t be able to sleep at night.” Pearl said, excitement in her voice.
“Sure, it’ll totally be more scary than mine.” Scar challenged. “I’ll have you know mine if the scariest thing out there! You can try all you want, I highly doubt yours will beat it.”
“Oh, is this a challenge? You bet! Hey G, who’s side are you on?” Both of them turned towards Grian, who looked like a dear caught in headlights, with him staring at the guitar near the table before looking at the other two.
“Uh.. I think Pearl’s is better? Hey, aren’t we supposed to be making bracelets right now?” Grian asked, clearly trying to change the topic (Impulse could see Mumbo confused at the sudden swap), but it surprisingly worked. Pearl and Scar both seemed to have a moment of realisation, before immediately getting to work
“Alright, i’m making Scar’s, Scar’s making Impulses, Impulse is making Grian’s, Grian your making Mumbo’s and Mumbo your making mine, got it?” Pearl instructed, somehow being more focused on this then keeping her own skin safe. After many sounds of agreement, they all started making it.
Pearl immediately grabbed a cat piece which resembled Jellie and slid it onto the string, together with a piece that looked like his patched up hat he always loved, and a bandage just to insult Scar.
Scar first piece was a white circle with a yellow “i” on top along with a piece that looked like redstone. Strangely, he also added some angel wings.
(“Im an imp, why is he adding angel wings?”)
Impulse had grabbed the piece with a pair of parrot wings (He knew for a fact Pearl had got that for Grian), googles, a feather charm, a sun charm and a waffle.
Grian immediately headed for the mustache charm, together with the redstone, tie and buttercup charm, and also grabbing a spoon charm the last moment
Mumbo took the moon, pearl and star charms, along with a few flowers. And a few red versions for one side of the bracelet too.
(So what if Pearl had the most amount of charms fitted to her? It was her set! Who was going to tell her what to do with HER items? Mumbo wasn’t going to complain anyway.)
— — — — — — — — — — — — — —
After a bit, all of them had finished the matching bracelets and started giving them to the respective person one by one. Their reactions played out before they quickly put it on
“Oh my goodness the Jellie! I didn’t know you had this charm! Oh, and my hat! It’s just perfect, Pearl!”
(Somehow, the bandage went unnoticed. Grian would point it out to him later, which then caused a series of “Peaaarrrllll!” and “What the heck!”.)
“Of course you took the yellow i, and the redstone too! Hey, wait, what’s with the angel wings?”
(If all of them had giggled, then Impulse definitely didn’t understand. He’d come to understand later when he showed it to Gem.)
“Pearl, why don’t you use this set more often? These fit me perfectly!”
“Oh its so nic- oh come on! Grian, why did you HAVE to add the spoon?”
“HAHA! The charm combinations are all so cute!! And the blood spatter. . .”
The night was soon upon them. As Impulse started up a fire (the venue had an electronic fire, because who would trust a bunch of chaotic teenagers to set up a fire by themselves?), the rest of Boatem had gathered around it, excitement buzzing around. This time, Grian sat beside Mumbo, while Scar and Pearl were busy making even more bracelets not based on anyone specific.
“I can't wait to tell you my campfire story! I PROMISE it'll scare the living heck out of you!” Pearl said. Scar rolled his eyes, clearly not convinced.
(He had gone to grab a marshmallow, but his hand was swatted away by Impulse.
“There's a bathroom with a sink nearby, wash your hands.” he told him.)
When he finally managed to set the s’mores ingredients on the table nearby and get Scar to wash his hands, he turned around to see Pearl grabbing the ukelele she (apparently) brought along from her bag.
Her ukulele looked like the typical ukulele with a wood pattern, but there were all sorts of stickers plastered over it, like the classical moon and star stickers, but there was also a parrot, sunflower, deer antlers, a yellow “i” sticker (Impulse added that one), and a bunch of others which couldn’t be made out unless closely looked at.
She started strumming the guitar, playing a tune Impulse couldn't recognise. Scar and Grian started singing along, and only then did Impulse recognise it
(They initially played Counting Stars, then California Girls per Scar's request, Riptide and a few others)
“I start first, Scar goes next, then Grian, Pearl and Mumbo, got it?.”
“Just let us start already!”
Impulse promptly started telling his story. It was thr typical ghost story, haunted cabin in woods where the main character eventually dies. Pearl and Scar had both said something along the lines of “That wasn't very scary, now was it?” To be fair, it was a bit isappointing of a story if Impulse had any say, but he just wanted to get the party started, so he didn’t mind.
(IDK HOW TO WRITE IMPULSES STORY LOL… I promise I'm not biased)
“Well we'll Pearl, any last words?”
“Oh please! I'm still confident. I will win those 20 bucks easily.”
“Alright Pearly, no backing out now! Be prepared to lose. Ahem, back in the 1990s, there was this famous businessman. He used to be just a small business, selling only small goods.”
“One day, he disappeared. No one knew him that well, so nobody noticed. Yet, a few days later, he came back, with all sorts of goods.
His business started booming afterwards. He found ways to appease everyone! Watches, Hats, Cloaks, Weapons, everything of the sorts!”
“However, one day, he disappeared again. Almost everyone noticed with his reputation now. Investigations took place, and it took them almost 3 days before they found the body. Strangely, the body was decaying, as if it had been dead for months. But he had been noticed only a few days before.
The case extended on for another month. Many clues were found, but none led to where the man was. Eventually, they found a room, in which clothes of many famous businessmen who had disappeared were in. Pictures of them were hung up, a few which had a knife stabbed through. Piles of clothes which the men were often seen wearing also lay… they never tracked the culprit down, but some said they saw a rotting deer prancing around. . .”
Scar had attempted to make his voice sound as creepy and scary as possible, but by the end he had returned to his normal voice with how straining it was. Mumbo and Impulse were scared and creeped out, but not like they couldn't sleep. It may keep them up at night for a bit, but otherwise they'd be fine.
Grian seemed interested (probably cause he knew this was a real case. He always liked these horror like cases.) and Pearl had rolled her eyes.
“Campfire story, sure. But it barely even passes as scary! I thought I would get something more! Grian, tell your story, you'll scare them, totally.”
“Okay okay Pearl. Impatient much?”
“Anyway, have any of you heard the myth of watchers?” All of them (minus Pearl, whose eyes gleamed instead) shook their head.
“Well, that makes it better. These stories are always better when going in blind.”
“Watchers are a type of folktale. They were eldritch creatures with unknown origins. Some people suspected they were created as a mistake. Others told stories of creatures who were mangled together to form them.”
“They had aspects of angels, but their appearance looked anything but. They had many wings, tons of eyes, and claws which looked boic black, it was as if they cut through the world.”
(Grian could tell Mumbo was creeped out by the description.)
“They were treated almost as if they were gods, with all sorts of groups surrounding them. Cults, churches, tons of people worshipped. They saw them as a “saviour.”, a blessing from Notch himself.”
“What people didn’t know was that these gods they worshipped weren’t as they seemed. Behind the scenes, they were notorious for destroying any and all remnants of any server they wished. They swore to destroy all of the server inhabitants. Admins, players, mods. . . All of them had to go. None could remain”
(Rather abrupt twist, if Grian had any say, but he didn't know how to transition properly so.)
(no im not projecting shut up.)
“Additionally, they would even take it and torture whichever player of their choice, typically the admin. They were also known to host some sort “life game”. These games were the survival of the fittest types, with only a certain amount of lives before you were eliminated permanently. They would unnerve the players a ton. They were basically notorious creatures.”
“It doesn’t sound all that scary to be honest. . .” Scar tried to insult, but Pearl quickly responded
“Grian, you forgot so many of the details! You gotta explain, else it isn’t scary.” Pearl said.
Mumbo and Impulse were both pretty scared, honestly. Grian had just side eyed her.
“Fine, it’s my turn now!” Pearl practically declared. She leaned closer into the fire, making the light shine on her face, giving an ominous glow.
“They say the scariest things are what lay above the sky, but they have clearly never seen what lies below…” She gave a manic looking smile, her eyes appearing red in the fire.
“Down in the deep caves, there lies one, one with a city ancient to time, leveled with sculk. They say bodies could be found in there, decaying and black goo littered all over them. They appeared as if they were attacked, but no monster could be found.
“The city was silent. Not even one cricket could be heard. There was one who dared enter the city. They dug deep to find it. The moment they even took a single step into the cave, a roar resounded through out the cave.”
“He looked around to find nothing. He went on, thinking he’d be fine, but he could’ve sworn he saw something in the dark. He went on, thinking it was like anyyy normal cave. Bones cracking and footsteps other than his own could be heard, but they only lasted a for a moment before disappearing with the wind.”
“The adventurer went through the cave. The items in the chest appeared as if they had stuff taken out in a hurry, like an evacuation took place. Many bodies lay near the chest too…”
“Suddenly, another roar tore out, and with it a creature appeared!”
“With no eyes, a gaping hole through his chest showing it’s ribcage, antlers puncturing its head. It was covered in rotting black liquid, appearing as if it was a decrepit body come back to life. What seemed like gills and fins could be found on their body and head. They were rotting though, parts of it seemingly torn off. Some people even said almost all the bones of their body could be seen.”
“They called it the Warden. They said if it detects you, there's no turning back. They could let out loud sonic beams breaking your ears reaching far and wide, and ripping parts of your body.
Even if you survived the loud blast, the creature was fast and swift. They could catch up to you in an instant. Their attacks were strong, and could crush you in an instant.
If you still survive all that, there's more coming. Stay too long and the sculk get’s you. A black gooey sparked with blue spots, littered all over the city. They say it was something like a parasite, entering your ski first, slowly destroying it until you bleed. It’ll even reach your brain, destroying all of it and sending your mind into a maniacal daze, slowly eating your body away. All until you become nothing but a pile of bones. Don’t try screaming out, with how deep the city is, no one will hear you. In the end, all you’ll be feeling is the suffering from the Warden and sculk. . . they say the adventurer never returned.”
Everyone’s face (besides Grian) practically paled. Pearl had tried to remain as still as possible, but it was clear on her face she found everything funny. Grian still look unimpressed, but the small smile on his face also said he found it pretty humorous.
“R-right! Never letting Pearl tell campfire stories, r-right!”
“Nice job Pearl, now none of them can sleep.”
“But it was fun! Come on, stay with me would ya?”
Grian let out a sigh. He went up to the table with marshmallows and quickly grabbed some before putting them on sticks and returning.
“So, Mumbo, you got any st-“
“Pearl their clearly horrified by yours, you not going to gain much.”
“. . . Fine.”
Moving on from Pearl’s story, they had started roasting marshmallows and smores.
Impulse had gone over to grab the bag of marshmallows and the satay sticks (look i’m from [insert country] and we use satay sticks a lot here), passing it to each member.
Scar immediately tried roasting his, and almost burned himself in the fire if it weren’t for Pearl stopping him from falling face first into the fire.
Mumbo had just eaten the marshmallow straight up, as if he couldn’t wait even a few minutes to roast them first
Grian roasted his and also tried playing around the fire, but unlike Scar, he didn’t trip over and fall into it. He also tried to steal Scar and Mumbo’s marshmallows a few times as well, and while Scar didn’t notice a single one until Grian himself had pointed it out, Mumbo managed to catch onto him a few times (Grian stills successfully stole a few so he considered it a win.)
Pearl ate and roasted her marshmallows like any normal person, still conversing with Grian about random folklores they could remember at the time and also ensuring none of them fell into the fire (In place of Impulse, who was busy ensuring the marshmallow didn’t fall all over the place)
The rest of the night was relatively peaceful, with them singing karaoke

Grian let out a sigh. He went up to the table with marshmallows and quickly grabbed some before putting them on sticks and returning.
“So, Mumbo, you got any st-“
“Pearl their clearly horrified by yours, you not going to gain much.”

The rest of the night was relatively peaceful, with them singing karaoke for a short while
