Work Text:
“And then I found out Zeus was actually my dad!”
“That's crazy, Sonic.”
It was a sunny day in the Mystic Ruins. Silence reigned throughout most of the place, with the exception of a single building, where the sounds of spinning fans and clanging metal could be heard.
“I know, right? And after that, Hermes challenged me to a race around the Olympus to see if I could beat a god, so of course I… Tails? Tails, are you listening?”
He blinked, turning away from his work and towards his friend with a sheepish smile. “Sorry, Sonic. You were saying?”
Sonic raised an eyebrow. “You know, you're pretty calm for someone hearing about how his best friend saved the Greek Pantheon.”
“It's just that… well… you've told me this story already.”
“What? But it literally just happened!”
“But you did,” he insisted. “Remember? About how you fell into a book and found out you were the hero destined to save the world…”
“Huh? No, that was the time I was the real King Arthur!”
“Really? And how about the genie that granted wishes?”
“That was a different book!”
“A different book you fell into…?”
The two friends stared at each other in silence. One looked skeptical, while the other looked increasingly upset.
“You don't believe me, do you.”
“I wanna believe you, Sonic! But c'mon, you found three separate books that transported you to different worlds, all of which had alternate versions of me and the rest of our friends?”
“I bet Athenian Philosopher Tails would've believed me.”
Regular Tails rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to the plane engine in front of him. “If you say so, Sonic.”
He sighed and stretched on his chair, resting his feet on the table. “Well, what have you been up to while I was gone, little bro?”
His friend's eyes never left the machine. “Nothing much. Just working on the chaos drive's triangulation of ring energy, it's actually important to maximise aerodynamic efficiency in rhythm with the gaia force.”
“Mmmhmmm.” Sonic moved back and forth on his chair, beginning to feel the urge to start running once again.
“I also had to buy some new tools to work on the stabilizer, Amy actually convinced the vendor to give me a discount, so I had some leftover money to get new blueprint paper and–”
“Mmm– wait.” He was suddenly pulled back to earth. “Hold on, Amy went with you to buy tools?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah, but she joined me because the tool store was close to this new clothing shop she wanted to check out.”
“Ah, makes more sense.” Sonic settled back down. “Knowing Amy, she probably tried everything they had available.” He chuckled.
“It sure felt like it.” Tails sighed. “I stopped counting after the twentieth outfit she showed me.”
His attention bounced back to the fox. “Amy… modeled for you?”
“Yeah.” Tails didn't notice his surprise. “She does that every time we go shopping.”
“...every time, you say? And, how often do you two go shopping together?”
“Um, like, every change of season? I don't even buy anything myself, she just wants someone to tell her whether the clothes look good or not.”
“Uh-huh. And that someone is you?”
“I know, right? Fashion is not exactly my strong suit. She says I spend too much time in my lab, so I guess that's her way of getting me to go outside.”
“I see…” Sonic was discovering something completely new about his old friend. “What else does Amy do to get you out of the lab?”
He kept his attention on the Cyclone, picking up a wrench from his toolbox. “Hm… like, taking me to restaurants, picnics, the beach, this sort of thing.”
Sonic's eyes widened, before his face fell into one of his trademark smirks. “Tell you what, buddy. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that the two of you are going out.”
Tails almost dropped the wrench, turning to his friend with a flushed face. “Wh-what?”
“I always knew you had it in ya.” He scratched his nose with a chuckle. “You got it from me, luck with the ladies runs in your big brother's blood.”
“M-me and Amy aren't going out! Why would you think that?”
“You just told me you two go on all these dates–”
“Those weren't dates.” Tails cut him off. “It's like I said, she's just trying to get me out of the house more often.”
“If you say so, Romeo.” Sonic grinned.
He rolled his eyes. “You've been reading too much.”
“C'mon buddy, you're the smart one. How can you not see what's in front of you?”
“There's nothing to see,” said Tails. “Amy's just thoughtful, you know that.”
“Alright then, how about this?” Sonic rested his elbows on his knees. “Tell me what else you two do together. Let's decide whether or not she likes you.”
“I told you, she doesn't.”
“Spill it out, then.”
Tails tried to ignore his friend and focus on his work. However, the smug expression on the corner of his vision was just too much.
“Okay, fine!” He dropped his wrench on the table, turning to face Sonic fully. “She, well… she sometimes visits me bringing something she cooked or baked.”
The teasing smile in front of him made him continue. “B-but that's because sometimes I'm too focused on a project and I forget to eat!”
“Okay, that's true.” Sonic also had to make sure every now and again that his little bro had eaten something other than mint candy during the day. “What else?”
“She… likes to bring movies for us to watch, sometimes.”
“Movies? I've never seen you make it past the first ten minutes of a movie, you always fall asleep.”
“Yeah, that's true.” His eyes darted to the side. “I try to stay awake for her, but I always wake up after the movie's over with my head on her lap.” His cheeks were pink, his tails coiled.
He turned back to Sonic, frowning at his growing smirk. “She doesn't like me like that.” He insisted.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. In case you forgot, Amy's not exactly subtle when she's interested in someone. If she wanted to be with me, she would've said so.”
“...well,” Tails had a point. Was this why he refused to make a move? “Maybe she changed her methods?”
“It's easier to believe in your story with the books.”
Sonic frowned. “You've been pretty snarky ever since you got a girlfriend.”
“I didn't get one!”
“Tails and Amy sitting on a tree, K-I-S–” His rhyme was interrupted when he had to dodge a wrench coming for his head.
“Quit it!”
“I knew love was blind, but not that it also had bad aim!” He shouted as he started running.
Sonic circled the lab dodging a few different tools before shooting towards the vast Mystic Ruins. He knew Tails wasn't seriously trying to hurt him, but it was better to leave before he brought out the stuff that could do that.
As he put distance between himself and the building, Sonic started to ponder on everything he had learned. Sometime during his many travels and adventures, Amy had developed a relationship with his little bro, even if he didn't realize it yet.
He… wasn't sure what to think of that. Tails clearly had a thing for her, and she seemed to be looking after him, but…
Call it big brother paranoia, but Sonic decided to make a quick trip to Amy's apartment in order to talk to–
“Sonic!”
“WHOA!”
He jumped to the side, hitting a boulder at top speed in a shower of rings.
“Oh my Gaia! Are you okay?” The girl Sonic almost hit ran in his direction, helping him get to his feet.
“Ouch, yeah… just wasn't paying attention to where I was going. How are you doing, Amy?”
Amy wore her classic everyday outfit, with the addition of a picnic basket on her arm. “I'm doing well, thank you! What about you? Been a while since I've seen your face around here.”
“Oh, you know how it is. Just out saving another world from being destro–” He was cut off when she threw her arms around his neck.
“You and your adventures! Was it actually another world or did you just 'fall' into a book again?” She giggled.
What, was this an inside joke among his friends now? She let go of him, and Sonic realized how different this hug felt. It was cozy, but not… overwhelming, like usual.
“It was another world…” His eyes fell to her basket and he remembered the matter of just moments ago. “Are you on your way to see Tails?”
“Mm? Oh, yeah! I'm taking him out on a picnic. You know how he'll just spend days on end at that workshop if we let him.” Her voice rose in pitch and her tail started wagging at the mention of his little bro's name. Sonic noticed that the way she reacted to Tails was pretty similar to how she used to react to him.
“Uh, yeah. Say Amy, um…” What he was about to do could go very, very wrong, but he had to be sure. “Since I'm back, what do you think of you and me going on a, um, a date?”
She blinked. He waited for the squealing, the bone-crushing hug, the kisses… but they never came. Instead, she averted her gaze and bit her lip.
“Oh. Sorry, Sonic, but… I kinda have my eyes set on someone else right now.”
Wow. And Tails said his book adventures were hard to believe.
“B-but please don't let this bring you down! You're wonderful, and lots of girls would love to go out with you! Like, there's that lemur–”
“Okay! Okay, thank you, Amy.” He cut her off before she could continue. “Um, is Tails the one you're interested in by any chance?”
“Huh?” Her face flushed red. “How did you– I mean, w-why would you think that? Did he say something…?” Her eyes fell to the ground and she started playing with the rim of her dress.
…heh.
“Just a guess.” Sonic said with a grin. “You should definitely ask him out. I have a feeling he's into you.”
“R-really?” She squealed, brimming with hope. But her face fell a second later. “I mean, I don't know… I'm not very lucky when it comes to this type of thing.”
Oh.
Was this his fault? Amy was afraid of being rejected, and Tails won't believe she likes him unless she says so herself. Sonic couldn't help feeling responsible for the dilemma his friends were in.
“Listen, Amy.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “You're a great girl, and Tails knows that. Just be honest with him and I promise he won't disregard your feelings.”
He was afraid to be called out on his hypocrisy, but Amy gave him a soft smile instead. “You're right. Thank you, Sonic.”
He smiled back. “Anytime. Want a ride to the lab?”
“I'll have to pass, I don't want the food in my basket to be all splattered when I get there.”
“I see.” He chuckled. “Good luck, then. See ya!” He disappeared from her sight with a sonic boom.
He resumed his run through the Ruins, his mind wandering to the young couple once again. Sonic never imagined his little buddy and his former fangirl being an item, but fate had a way of surprising you.
Like how he was fated to save Olympus. Which actually happened. No matter what anyone says.
