Work Text:
“Attack him! C'mon!”
“I'm attacking him! Dodge the- oh Penders, he killed me.”
“It's the last stage, Miles! Focus!”
“I'm focused! Come here and revive me!”
The light night rain bathed Emerald Town. One house stood out among the small buildings on the beachside, given it was shaped like its owner's head. The only light inside it came from a screen, illuminating an orange fox and a pink hedgehog while they fought a fierce battle.
“Grab the sword! Don't let him get up!”
“C'mon, almost there…”
“YES!” They both cheered in unison when the background turned black, signaling the Boss' life had reached zero.
The duo high-fived, before dropping back on the couch and leaving the controllers to the side. They let out a sigh of relief in unison at finally finishing the game.
“Told ya we could do it.”
“I still don't get why we had to play at the hardest difficulty.”
“Because it's more rewarding!” Tails turned to his friend, who looked as tired as him. “Wasn't it fun?”
“Okay, fine, I admit it was fun.” On the screen, the Boss collapsed to the ground with hands and knees. Amy leaned forward to press the hit button one last time, and the screen lit up with K.O. written in golden letters.
Sitting back, the friends relaxed and watched while the game proceeded towards the ending scene.
And so…
Scott was saddened by Ramona's departure…
…But only for a little while!
Soon he was dating Knives, Kim and Envy… all at once!
He was the happiest guy in the world!
…Or was he?
THE END
“Urgh.” Amy scoffed. “Why did we get your ending?”
“Well, I'm Player One,” Tails answered.
“I would've made you pick Wallace if I knew this would happen.”
“He doesn't even get with anyone, his ending is just him drinking wine.”
“Exactly!” She raised her fist in the air. “Clearly, the best one!”
Tails chuckled. “You're a bit young to be a wine mom, Amy.”
“Oh, shut it!” She threw a cushion in his direction. “As if you're not already a garage dad.”
He caught the cushion in his hands, before throwing it back. “What does that even mean?”
“It means you're a nerd who spends all your time in the garage!” She grabbed the flying weapon in the air, jumping towards her friend and whacking him in the head with it.
He laughed before grabbing his own cushion, beginning a pillow fight. A vicious duel then took place on Tails' couch, lasting several minutes and ending with both combatants sweating and gasping for air.
“I… call a truce…” Tails said between breaths.
“Fine… I was kicking your ass anyway.”
“Whatever helps you sleep at night, Rose.” He smirked her way.
Before she could reply, her phone pinged on the coffee table. She inclined herself to look at the sender, furrowing her brows and biting her lip.
Tails gave her a concerned look. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, it's just Espio. He's asking if I'm free this weekend.”
“From your reaction, I guess the answer will be 'no'.”
“I mean, I don't really wanna shoo him off without a good reason. Our first date wasn't bad or anything.”
“But…?”
She let out a sigh. “But… it was kinda boring. Museums aren't really my thing, and he had something to say about every work in there. I mean, aren't ninjas all about being silent?”
“Geez. You haven't been lucky ever since you decided to try dating, have you?”
“Not really. I thought that getting over Sonic meant that I'd finally get a boyfriend, but I went out with like, four different guys so far and I still haven't even gone on a second date!” She groaned, sinking deeper into the couch. “Maybe I'm doomed to become an old lady who lives alone with a bunch of Chao.”
Tails rolled his eyes with a smile. “C'mon, don't be like that. I'm sure there's someone out there for you.”
“Well, it's about time they show up. I wasted so much time going after your big bro that I have zero romance experience. I've never even kissed before!”
“W-well, that's not such a big deal.” Tails rubbed the back of his head. “I've never kissed anyone either, y'know?”
“Wha- really? What about Rouge?”
“That was on the cheek! And it didn't matter anyway, she was just messing with me.”
Amy stayed silent for a moment, studying her two-tailed friend intensely. She held her chin with a thoughtful expression, an idea forming in her mind. Tails tilted his head, and with a slight blush, she made her request.
“Tails…” She took a deep breath. “I want your help to… p-practice kissing.”
“I mean, I guess I could try and get Rouge to kiss you. I've got a Chaos Emerald around here somewhere we could use as bait-”
“What!? No! I meant me and you!”
“W-what?” His face turned a deep shade of red.
“Listen, just hear me out, okay?” She tried to keep her own blush under control. “I just need something to feel like I'm not stagnated, y'know? That I'm actually making some progress in my love life. Also, when I do find a guy I like, I don't wanna scare him away with my terrible kissing skills.”
“But… why me?”
“Why not? We're both inexperienced, right? Don't you want some knowledge for when you get a girlfriend of your own?”
“I mean…” Tails wrung his hands in embarrassment and thought. “I-I guess. But isn't it weird? Doing this with a friend?”
“Of course not! Friends do this all the time!” She tried to convey more confidence than she felt. “And you're like, my best friend, Miles. I wouldn't trust anyone else with something like that.”
Tails' debated silently. He also saw her as his best friend, and that's exactly what scared him. What if this ruined things between the two of them? But… Amy trusted him. And he didn't want to let her down. Taking a deep breath, he made his decision. “Okay. I-I'll do my best.”
“Yes!” Amy threw her arms around his neck, bringing him into a hug. The sudden closeness didn't help ease his embarrassment.
She let go of him, their faces now a few inches from each other. Her blush now matched his, neither being able to look into the other's eyes.
“So…”
“Uh… I guess we just go for it?”
“R-right.”
The two friends fought to ignore their pounding hearts. Mustering up their courage, their faces got closer and closer, until…
Their noses bumped.
…
They burst out laughing.
“Gosh. We suck at this, don't we?”
“Yeah.” Tails wiped a tear off his face. “Wanna try again?”
“Sure.” The pair locked eyes, more relaxed now. They leaned closer once again, careful to turn their heads slightly this time.
Their lips met. Shyly at first, but more eagerly as time passed. Curiosity and excitement taking over, the two friends basked in this new feeling as warmth rose in their chests.
Eventually, they parted. Both now had shy smiles to go with their flushed faces.
“So, um, what did you think?”
“You taste like cherry,” was the first thing Tails managed to say.
“T-thanks, it's my lipstick.” Amy absentmindedly licked her lips. “You taste like mint.”
“Thanks, it's my dinner.”
The pair shared another laugh. Things felt much more natural now. Blue eyes met green, and without a single word needed, they leaned in once again.
The two friends worked together to explore these new sensations. They got more comfortable and more intimate as time passed, holding each other close as the kisses became deeper and more serious.
Neither Amy nor Tails knew how long they stayed there. The only sound in the room was of the persistent rain falling against the windows. The forgotten TV screen illuminated an orange fox and a pink hedgehog as they cuddled on the couch.
“It's a bit late. It's gonna be dangerous to go home at this hour.” Tails broke the silence.
Amy giggled. “Already trying to make me spend the night? This was supposed to be just practice, y'know?”
“Are you sure that all this is still something friends 'do all the time'?”
“I… no.” She ran her hand through the fur on his cheek. “No, I don't think so.”
“So, what now? Should I ask you on a date?”
“You better.”
“Are you free this weekend?” He smirked.
She let out a chuckle. “Aren't you lucky? I just happen to be.”
“Awesome. There's this new museum that's just opened I just know you're gonna love.”
She playfully hit his shoulder, going into a fit of giggles that he soon joined in. They settled together on the comfy couch, neither moving an inch until the sun touched the living room windows.
Tails and Amy knew that 'friends' was no longer enough to describe what they were. They weren't sure what was, but the pair was more than ready to find out.
