Hitoshi wasn’t exactly looking forward to going out to dinner with a bunch of strangers even if they were now, nominally, his family.
As far as he was concerned, his family was Aizawa-sensei, Yamada-sensei, and their small army of cats. But apparently Aizawa-sensei was very fond of his sister, which meant that Hitoshi was putting on his best sweater and combing through his hair.
He hadn’t even gotten used to calling his new foster parents anything other than their teacher honorifics! How was he supposed to integrate into the more distant parts of the family?
This was going to be a disaster, he could tell. Of course Hitoshi would be on his best behaviour, but that never seemed to matter before.
It didn’t help that Yamada-sensei was recognized by some fans shortly before they reached the restaurant, lagging behind to sign some autographs while Aizawa-sensei kept himself and Hitoshi out of the photos.
“Wait here,” Aizawa-sensei told him once they passed the front entrance, coming to a stop in the entry hall. “I’ll go make sure the location didn’t get leaked.”
Hitoshi barely managed to offer a nod in response before the hero disappeared down the corridor.
He shifted on his feet, feeling awkward. There was literally nothing for him to do there but stare at the decor. There was one vase with dried flowers standing beside him, and wide-open glass doors separating the empty entrance hall from the corridor, running adjacent to it.
The eating area was to the right, judging by the fact that that’s the direction Aizawa-sensei went in. And whatever was to the left, it somehow spawned one of the last people Hitoshi wanted to see.
“Shinsou!” Midoriya waved in greeting, seeming genuinely happy to see him. “Hi! It’s good to see you!”
Hitoshi grunted in what could generously be called a response. Midoriya didn’t seem discouraged, coming closer.
“There’s a rumour that you’ll be transferring into our class next semester!” The teenager bounced on the balls of his feet. “I can’t wait to spar with you!”
…The worst part was that Midoriya sounded genuine.
“Yeah…” Hitoshi moved to rub the back of his neck, feeling awkward. Now, how to best get rid of Midoriya before either of his foster parents came back…
“Yoo! Little Listener!” Too late. Yamada-sensei was already back, offering his fist to Midoriya in what was the start of an extremely elaborate greeting.
Hitoshi narrowed his eyes in confusion. When would they have had the time to practice this-?
“Hi, uh… Yamada-sensei!” Midoriya greeted, though it sounded uncertain. There was no way he had forgotten their teacher’s name. What was up with that?
“Ah, ah, ah,” Yamada-sensei waged his finger. “What did we say about forms of address when off the clock?”
Midoriya blushed slightly. “Sorry, Uncle Zashi!” He corrected himself, and Hitoshi’s brain stopped working.
404, logic not found. Please try rebooting.
By the time he had tuned back into the conversation, Midoriya was chattering with Yamada-sensei about something to do with his radio show, and the scene still made absolutely no sense.
Unless… No. There’s no way. It couldn’t be-
That’s when Aizawa-sensei returned, arm in arm with a greenhaired woman who could have been nothing other than Midoriya’s parent.
Midoriya perked up at the sight. “Hi, Uncle Shou!” He greeted, before a frown showed up on his face. “The location leaked, then?”
“Mhm,” Aizawa-sensei messed up Midoriya’s bird’ nest of a hairstyle as he passed. “We’re gonna have to use the backup location. As much as I might fear where you’ll lead us.”
Midoriya giggled as he ducked, trying to escape the ruffling. Hitoshi totally didn’t feel jealous of their easy rapport.
Totally.
“You’ll like it!” The teenager promised. “It’s a cat cafe!”
Okay, Hitoshi took back whatever mean things he thought about Midoriya. If this evening ended up in a cat cafe, he’d willingly buy his hero merch. There was no way 1A didn’t have a black market for that already.
But Aizawa-sensei narrowed his eyes, staring at him distrustfully. Midoriya lasted moments before scratching at his cheek, an awkward smile shaping his face. “It… Miiiiight also be All Might themed?”
Whatever, as long as there were cats.
