Chapter 1
The fluorescent lights of the BAU greeted Ruby as she made her way into the main doors of the BAU in Quantico. She flashed her clearance badge at Steve the security guard on duty with a smile while making her way to the elevator to head up to her team's floor. Ruby adjusted her black under bust vest and her white button up then she patted down her black dress pants as she waited for the elevator. Finally it dinged and the doors opened. She stepped into the familiar confined area ready to start her work day.
Ruby had been with the BAU for the last few months, but she had yet to see field work with the team. She hoped that soon Agent Hotchner would see that she could handle herself and let her head out into the field with them. She had solved a few cases with different members but never with the whole team. She had never had the words “Wheels up in thirty” be said to her yet. Ruby understood that being part of the team meant that she had to be prepared to work with the entire team and she believed that she was actually ready to do so.
The elevator dinged and slid open, the familiar sounds of the BAU bay meeting her. The chatter of her fellow colleagues over morning coffee and their daily lives filled her ears along with the ringing of phones and case chatter. She made her way across the bullpen to her desk. As she reached her desk she noticed that Morgan and Spencer had taken up their normal spot near the coffee machine. Once she sat her backpack down she made her way over to the coffee table to start her normal morning routine.
“The guy was built.” Morgan said as he leaned against the coffee table, seeming to favor his left shoulder a bit. “He made me look small and he hit like a tank.”
Spencer chuckled as he stirred his coffee, “maybe you should start working out.”
Ruby reached for one of the paper cups as Morgan shot Spencer a look, “You hearing this, Red? Pretty Boy’s got jokes now.”
Ruby pulled the decanter out of the machine and poured herself some coffee, “Well, you haven't hit the gym in a while. Maybe Spencer’s onto something there.” She smiled as she stirred her coffee with the small stirring stick.
Morgan’s hand came up to his muscular chest in mock shock, “I’m deeply wounded.” He then grinned as he took another drink of his coffee, “maybe i should ask a few questions and get you and Pretty Boy here to retake your field exams on the track.”
“Good thing we’re both doctors and that doesn’t apply to us.” Spencer chuckled as Hotch had made his way into the bullpen with a serious look on his face.
“Wheels up in thirty, team, we have a new case. I’ll explain more on the way there.” Hotch motioned with his hand for the team to start getting ready.
Ruby smiled at Spencer and Morgan as she took her leave and went towards her desk.
“Doctor Rosewood, I said wheels up in thirty, that means you too. Get ready.” Hotch said as he passed her desk to head to his office to get his things and the case files.
Ruby’s heart felt like it was going to leap out of her chest as Hotch spoke. Her first ‘Wheels up in thirty’ and she felt like she was so unprepared for it. Her hand trembled a bit as she reached down to grab her backpack. Her eyes scanned the bullpen and saw that Spencer, Morgan and JJ were already heading to the elevator. She quickly made her way to the elevator that was being held for her.
“Welcome aboard.” JJ smiled as she moved to let Ruby into the elevator with them.
