Work Text:
Mordecai didn't like him at first. Too cheery, too handsy, and just too loud and energetic. Rocky was just too much all at once. But over time, he couldn't help but find himself enjoying all the cheer and energy. The silly man just had this way of endearing himself to people.
He can't recall exactly when, why, or how Rocky started hanging out in his office, but now the musician is a much needed fixture to his daily operations.
The companionship of it was something Mordecai didn't know he was missing. The wandering conversations help him get through the more boring parts of his paperwork, and when not talking, Rocky is either playing his violin or off fetching him tea or something to eat.
They even came up with a game just for the two of them. You see Rocky has been learning German from Mordecai. In return Rocky has been teaching Mordecai Irish Gaelic.
So the game is, one of them will keep talking until the other can actually give a proper response in the language of the challenger. The responder has ten minutes or it's their loss. First to ten points wins and winner picks lunch the next day.
Right now Mordecai has no idea what Rocky is saying but he doesn't want him to stop talking. Something in the way he sounds, looks at him as he speaks, it's making his heart flutter.
Yes, this silly man had stumbled into his life and made him fall for him. Rocky became important to him and he's stuck on what to even do about it.
Mordecai let's out a long slow breath. He tries to focus but only catches a couple words.
Rocky has his own secondary game he plays. He's terrified to tell Mordecai that he actually loves him. So he does it in Gaelic.
He speaks romantic words and will do so until he really starts catching on.
He hopes that if Mordecai does understand him completely one day when he says something mushy that it doesn't blow up in his face.
Mordecai understood the word you and the word sun, then he caught the word walk. But he is still drawing a blank.
What Rocky had said was "Although you are the moon I consider you like the sun. I would rather walk in the pale light you give for it's far sweeter than any of the golden rays others try to cast. I love you so deeply it aches."
Mordecai is flipping through his spare notebook. "You want to go... on a walk with me?" He translated slowly.
Rocky gave him a grin. "Yes, but not what I said." He spoke in his language still.
'The game still continues.' Mordecai thinks. Grabbing the other notebook he didn't think he would have to use. One he was scared to hope to use.
Mordecai translated a bit more accurately. "The love I... for you is ... than any ... . There has ... been a ... ... word to ... just how ... you ... me." Is what he was able to translate.
His breath caught in his throat. His mouth went dry and his hands shake as it all hits him. Rocky can see his game is likely up.
What he fully said was. "The love I hold for you is deeper than any ocean. There has never been a proper enough word to describe just how much you have me."
Rocky begins to panic. Mordecai can see that too. So in English. "I love you too! Please don't panic and run!"
This did make Rocky pause mostly because the language switch was a stop and restart for his brain. But then it registered exactly what Mordecai said.
"Y-you really mean th-that?" He was in disbelief.
"Yes, you made me fall for you, I... I got so used to you and your ridiculous antics and I found myself unable to imagine my life any other way. I love you Rocky." Mordecai spoke with more emotion than he has in years.
A tear fell from Rocky's eye as he was immediately rushing to get right to Mordecai.
He knew what was going to happen and gladly opened his arms for Rocky accepting the embrace that sped right into him.
"I love you Mordecai! So, so much! You balance me and make me feel capable again. I don't want to be with anyone else." Rocky says his tone wattery.
Mordecai just holds him as Rocky is squeezing him as if he could dissappear at any moment.
"Tell me, what did you say when I asked about a walk?" Mordecai asked to try and ground him.
Rocky recited his words in English this time slightly muffled into Mordecai's chest.
He heard the mans heart speed as the words touched him.
He gently cupped Rocky's face and had him look right into his eyes. Then he closed them and leaned in.
Rocky's body heated up but gladly accepted this. Leaning in himself meeting Mordecai's lips with his own. It was better than both of them had hoped for as they shared each kiss.
Eventually when they did part both felt that nervous happy giddy feeling. Mordecai managed in Irish. "Let's go for that walk my love."
In broken German Rocky managed to say. "Lead the way my dear."
