Work Text:
A flash of lightning was the only warning that Johnny had before thunder rattled the window of his room. "Shit!" he grumbled, tugging a pillow up over his head as he shrunk back under his comforter. It was no secret that Johnny hated thunder, hated storms, hated all of that nonsense. It was a bit embarrassing - an alpha who worked with explosives every day being scared of a thunderstorm of all things. He'd been told plenty of times to pretend the cracks of thunder were simply explosions but those wires never fully crossed in his brain and he'd been left to suffer through storms all his life.
He shouldn't need any sort of comfort during a simple storm but fuck he wanted it. The feeling of strong arms curled around him, the sharp scent of bourbon and gunpowder clinging to their sheets- nope.
Johnny could not go down that route again. That wasn't an option. It was never an option. It would never be an option. No matter how much Johnny wanted it, he knew that deep down the other alpha wouldn't want anything to do with him. Not in that way at least. Sure, they were friends (if Johnny could even call it that). They worked well together on missions. They were.. nice enough to each other. But it wouldn't be anything more than that, it couldn't be anything more than that.
Alphas were too territorial, too hellbent on finding some pretty omega to settle down with. They could work together but they couldn't have a relationship. At least, that's what Johnny had had drilled into his head by his traditional, white picket fence, two and a half pups family. If he secretly longed for a relationship similar to that of his captain and a certain helicopter pilot that was his own business and no one needed to know that particular secret.
A light ping from his phone caught his attention and he snatched it up into his den of blankets right as another boom of thunder vibrated the fucking walls.
'You alright?'
It was a simple text from Simon. Something he hadn't expected but it was much appreciated. Price must have mentioned Johnny's little fear at some point. His heart hammered in his chest as he bit into his lower lip, trying desperately to kill the smile that threatened to stretch over his face.
'Yeah. I'm fine.' was his reply as he shuddered at another crack of thunder.
'Liar. Know you hate these bloody things. Up for some company?'
Johnny's heart stilled in his ribcage. He really should say no. Should tell Simon to go to sleep and not worry about him. But his fingers moved faster than his brain did. 'Sure. If you're feeling social and all.'
Not ten minutes later there was a knock at his door and Johnny was flying out of bed to fling the door open. He was met with the sight of his lieutenant, brown eyes heavy with sleep. The older man was clad in a tight black shirt and loose gray sweats that had Johnny's mouth watering. Fuck.
"Let me in?" it wasn't a request but Simon was nice enough to make it sound like one.
A small smile tugged at Johnny's lips as he stepped aside and let Simon make himself comfortable. "Home sweet home-" another burst of thunder had Johnny jolting ramrod straight before a tremble set in over his skin. "Sorry-"
"No. No apologizing. I know these things bother you," Simon dismissed easily and toed his sneakers off before he sat on the edge of Johnny's bed. The idea of the man's scent lingering shouldn't have made Johnny's heart flutter the way it did but.. here he was, feeling like a million butterflies detonated in his chest.
"Yeah? Price tell you that, did he?" Johnny asked as he carefully sat next to Simon, their knees touching every now and then.
A smug look crossed Simon's unmasked face. "No. I remembered it. Last time we were out in the field. That nasty storm rolled in and you couldn't stop shaking in your cot. Hated seeing you like that," that last bit was whispered, more for himself than Johnny. But it was still true.
Bright blue eyes filled with some sick sense of hope as Johnny leaned to brush his shoulder against Simon's. "Takin' a shine to me, LT?" he asked with a sly smile. But when Simon turned to look at him, their nose less than an inch apart from each other, Johnny's breath caught in his throat.
"Thought you'd gathered that by now," Simon breathed out, eyes hooded as he tilted his head a bit. That familiar scent bloomed out around him, mixing with the heavy scent of scotch and smoke, and Johnny nearly whined.
"We shouldn't-" he started but Simon cut him off by rubbing his nose against the bridge of Johnny's.
"And who said so, hmm? Definitely not Price. I don't mind being a dirty little secret. Not as long as I get to have you-" and it was Simon's turn to be interrupted. Johnny lunged for him, pinning him to the bed as he tucked his nose up under Simon's chin and scented him. Thunder knocked on the window again but Johnny seemed to barely notice as his lips skittered up Simon's jaw.
A sweet hum left him as his lips pressed gently to the corner of Simon's mouth. "Didn't think you saw me like that, sir," Johnny muttered and Simon pulled him in for a chaste kiss.
"Can't stop seeing you. All I see is you, Johnny. Just been waiting on you to catch up," that familiar laugh caused Johnny's chest to damn near cave in as he curled the blankets up over their shoulders.
Johnny tilted his head and kissed over the scarred skin on the bridge of Simon's nose. "Sorry it took a storm to give you an opportunity to say something," he chuckled and curled up on Simon's chest. It felt so right as the other alpha wrapped those arms around his waist and squeezed him. They fit together like puzzle pieces in a way that made Johnny damn near weep.
A deep chuckle rumbled through Simon's chest as he pressed his cheek to the top of Johnny's head, letting that mohawk tickle against his stubbled jaw. "Eh.. was tired of waiting on you to pick up on all the little courting gifts I kept leaving you," he purred, voice sweeter than Johnny's ever heard it before.
The other alpha flushed deeply, hiding his face in Simon's neck to avoid any more teasing. More thunder boomed outside the window and Johnny winced before he felt Simon's arms tighten around him. A soft, soothing sound came from Simon and Johnny couldn't help but smile. "Would you mind.. sleeping over tonight?" he asked, it sounded silly and childish and he wanted to take the words back right as he said them.
Simon grinned and pressed his lips to Johnny's temple. "I'd like that, sweetheart. I'd like that very much. Settle in. Get some sleep for me," he whispered, letting his own eyes fall shut as he kept Johnny tucked nice and tight to his chest.
Safe. Secure.
There was no other place Johnny wanted to be.
