The text of The Handmaids Tale was recorded on cassette tapes which were discovered in Bangor, Maine and published as a manuscript.
That manuscript became the basis of The Handmaid's Tale television series, airing from 2199-2207, and was part of a second wave of cultural interest in the Early Gilead Period. While the series was criticized for its romanticization of the past and its failure to connect with the descendants of Gilead survivors, it was also praised for its performances and scenic design.
