Chapter Text
The sun was blazing down, the heat making it almost unbearable to be outside. Summer here in the country is always miserable. Bugs nipping and eating at your skin, and the relentless itching that would follow for days after. The noise they make when buzzing, filling in the silence when there aren't any kids running up and down the street. It's almost eerie when there's no people around. It feels too quiet, except for the occasional whistle of the wind chimes.
“Yoshiki,” Hikaru says, for the hundredth time.
“Hm.” Yoshiki hums as a reply, looking up from his spot on the floor. Hikaru was in the doorway, one arm hanging onto the side and the other waving to grab the others attention.
“There's only one popsicle, did ya' wana share it?” He asks, nodding to the kitchen, “Yer mom said she'd go to the store later, but 'm pretty sure they're out too.”
“No, you can have it.” Yoshiki says dryly, letting his head hang low, his bangs covering half of his face. It was too hot though, he'd need to put it up later. He could feel the sweat dripping from his forehead down to his neck.
“Ya sure? I don't mind, we don't even have a fan to cool down.” Hikaru emphasized the part about not having a fan, turning his head to Kaoru's room.
“She called dibs on it, you can't be too mad.” Yoshiki said looking back up, he found Hikaru and Kaoru's semi bickering funny.
“Ya but- we’re older! She should respect her elders!” Hikaru faltered, trying to come up with a reason on the spot.
“Go get the popsicle, we can share.” He sighed, finally giving into Hikaru's stupid idea with a small smile on his face.
“Did he like these too?”
“Probably. I never cared enough to pay attention.” Yoshiki spat out dryly. Watching 'Hikaru' lick at his popsicle. He loved Popsicles, especially in summer. His favorite was the watermelon flavor, with little chocolate balls as the seeds. He always ate too many and got sick. “You've had them before,” He comments, his voice going soft, not wanting to acknowledge that they are basically two different people.
“Yeah... but it's like the movie, ya know? It's in my memories, I can remember doing things but I don't know what it feels like. So even if I've had these popsicles before... It just feels nice doing it again. With you.” 'Hikaru' quickly shoves that last comment in before going back to his popsicle.
“Oh.” Yoshiki says, without much emotion. His stomach flipped, not in the flustered way, but more of a 'I'm going to throw up,' way. Or maybe it was more of a mix of the two. Hearing Hikaru's voice say it, something he definitely would've never admitted out loud, but it's not Hikaru. It's not how Hikaru felt. “Whys it so different with me. 'm not special.”
“Well yer' my best friend. Or.. somethin' like that.” 'Hikaru' said shyly, like he was ashamed to admit it. He looked down, letting the popsicle drip onto his hand. He's said a lot more things you'd think most people would be embarrassed to admit, but shy's away at saying 'best friend.'
“Do you like the flavor?” Yoshiki asked out of nowhere, moving slightly closer to 'Hikaru'. They were sitting on the floor of Yoshiki's bedroom, the fan was in Kaoru's room while she slept. It felt all too familiar. Their knees were touching, he could feel the sweat on his knee, and could see it dripping from 'Hikarus' neck onto his shirt.
“Yeah. I like orange cream.” He answered, leaning back just a little bit. “Do ya.. Wana try?”
Yoshiki doesn't answer, watching it drip for a few seconds before grabbing 'Hikarus' wrist and licking from his hand to the popsicle. Quickly pulling away, staring wide-eyed at the other. His face grows hot, but it's not from the heat.
“Sorry- I just, it was dripping and-”
“Its cool, my hand was getting sticky anyway.” 'Hikaru' cuts him off, making up an excuse for Yoshiki. His voice was shaking, and he had the same expression as Yoshiki until he quickly shook his head.
There was an uncomfortable silence, 'Hikaru' had long finished his popsicle and now they were sitting across from each other, seeing who would break the silence first. Yoshiki was internally scolding himself for acting on impulse. That was freaky. Like even for 'Hikaru'.
“So do you uh.. Did you use to lick him too?” 'Hikaru' asked softly, shifting, trying to get comfortable against the side of Yoshiki's bed. He had picked up a volume of Master x Master, the same one he's read for the 7th time.
“No. I dont... he doesn't like that kinda stuff. Or he didn't.”
“Oh.”
“Sorry.”
“Its fine. I liked it.”
“What?”
“What..?”
“You.. liked it?” Yoshiki repeated, dumb founded. Maybe it wasn't past 'Hikaru'.
“Kinda, yeah. Is that weird?” 'Hikaru' asked, his attention now focused on Yoshiki.
“uhm. Yeah, I guess.” Yoshiki didn't know how to feel that 'Hikaru' liked it. He would've been more okay with him finding it disgusting more than liking it.
“Sorry. It just felt warm, your tongue I mean.” 'Hikaru' stated, as if Yoshiki didn't know what he meant.
“You're a freak, you know that?” Yoshiki smiled, trying to laugh off his uneasiness. 'Hikaru' laughed with him, seeming to get past Yoshiki's tongue being warm... “ 'm gona grab some water. Do ya want any?” He asked.
“Yeah.” 'Hikaru' said, setting down the volume of Master x Master, seeming pretty bored of it. He looked up as Yoshiki left, then looked back down to his wrist. He ran his own tongue over where Yoshikis was.
