Work Text:
It wasn’t normal for the Endless to go on dates. But yet, here Morpheus was, standing by a field, looking at the night sky.
The countryside in The Waking World was different from what it was in The Dreaming. The Dreaming’s fields were never-ending, with golden, shimmering crops with butterflies flying around, but here they were tiny, he could walk across it within minutes. He remembered when he first walked through a human-made field — it had felt ridiculous before he remembered humans only need crops big enough for their own needs. He had had a lot to learn when humans started climbing their way up to the top of the food chain, becoming the ruling species. None of the Endless really understood why humans ended up ruling the world, they pretended to be smarter what they were when they were usually just silly and irrational.
At least, that’s what Morpheus thought before he met you.
You. The first human he met who he ended up falling in love with. The first human he realised wasn’t as insufferable as most of them were. The one who he learned to love and who taught him not to judge so quickly.
Earlier, he had been much like a machine. Doing his job, controlling dreams, making sure his kingdom would stay in order, but he never realised the true extent he would have to go for humans. But you taught him love.
Oh, the endless teasing Desire got out of it, but for the first time he didn’t mind their purring voice in his ear.
And now, on one of your many dates, you just wanted a walk in the countryside under the glow of the moon. So that he arranged, and now you were standing there looking up at the stars and the moon, your hands intertwined.
“It’s beautiful,” you murmured, not averting your eyes from the sky. “To think that most of that is already dead and replaced by new.”
He smiled softly. “Yes. It is.”
You sighed, leaning against him slightly. “What’s up with The Dreaming lately?”
He huffed, amused you wanted to talk about his work during your date. “We have been busier than usual. People do not value sleep as much as they used to, so we need to work to accommodate it.”
You frowned at it. “Oh.”
“But, I would rather not talk about work, my love. I am here because of you,” he murmured and kissed your knuckles. “I want do not want to stress you out with my worries. They are mine to take care of.”
You pursed your lips. “I know. I just don’t want you to overwork yourself, it does take a toll on the Endless too.”
He smiled again, his hand caressing your cheek. “I promise to take care of myself. Do not worry about that.”
And so, the stargazing continued, the universe watching at one of the Endless and the human on the process to fall deeper and deeper in love with each other. And neither of you had no other place where you’d rather be.
