How a cat stole my sister's heart

Summary:

Can a cat's presence be a good thing?

While walking down the street Akito heard a soft meowing. At first it felt like nothing but when he noticed a very young cat in the box his heart melted. He decided to take it and it seems like the cat slowly became part of their family. Thanks to his dear sister, Ena.

Work Text:

Akito pov

I walked down the street of my city. A rain heavily fell on me and made my shirt stick to my skin. I didn't bring my umbrella with me so I had to suffer without it. Our friends group had a meeting at the cafe. Toya offered me his umbrella but I refused. It would be nice to have an umbrella but I won't take it away from my partner.

The rain didn't stop at all, shit, it rained heavily with every next minute. People were hiding at the train station, not a bad idea. It was pretty late so there were maybe four people at the station. Before I get overwhelmed with the rain, I walked under the roof and pulled out my phone with an exhausted sigh. I still had maybe 10 minutes to home... Perfect

I pulled out my phone from the backpack and found my texting app. I choosed Ena's number and my hands slowly started taping on the screen. My hands were red and barely moved from the cold weather, making it hard to type.

"I will come home late. Just saying that you won't spam my phone until it explodes" The massage was send and I closed the app.

I wanted to open another but I heard soft meowing. At first I thought someone at train station had a cat but it wasn't the case. Nobody seems to notice the meowing so Ive just ignored it.

Then another meow. Then another one.

At that point I turned off my phone and looked at the sound. The rain was heavily hitting the roof but I completely ignored that. I followed the weak meowing and found a cat in a small box. A pretty, orange cat. It looked around a month yo. What is a cat doing here? I kneed down to see if it has a collar... It didn't. So it mean they were most likely homeless. A cat looked healthy tho. Why leave such a cat alone?

It looked at me with its big eyes, meowing at me weakly. Why is my heart tightening already? Its just a cat, right? No matter what it was, I can't leave it outside. Not in this harsh rain. With a deep sigh I moved my hand toward the cat and let it sniff me. The cat soon nuzzled into my hand. Their wet fur nuzzled into my hand.

"Im gonna regret it, I feel it" A soft hum left my mouth and I gently picked up the cat. It let out a small meow but didn't try to escape, that's good. I am not chasing a cat in this shitty weather.

I cuddled it to my chest and started quickly walking home. The rain still didn't stop but I didn't care anymore. I curled a bit to protect the cat from the rain at least a bit. It's small claws hold onto my shirt as he slowly got to my house.

We've finally arrived. I was wet as hell. With a bit of troubles Ive took off my shoes and went upstairs to my room. The cat curiously watch the world around. It was pretty cute if you ask me. Soon I entered the room and put the cat on the ground.

"What am I supposed to do with you..?" I watched that little cutie walk around the room curiously. Its cat ears perched up and tail wagged.

I walked to my closet and took my pyjamas. With a quick swing I started taking off my clothes. A cold air hit me but I quickly covered myself with the clothes. The cat walked to me and nuzzled its wet body against my leg. How can I resist such a cute creature. I kneed down and started patting it gently. The cat meowed and definitely enjoyed my touch. Jeez, what should I do with the cat now? I can't keep it forever, can I?

"I will go and get you something to eat. Don't destroy anything" I said more to myself than to the cat. It probably didn't understand me so it was pointless to talk, right?

That's what I said to myself and left the room. I still felt a bit heavy from the rain but I couldn't do much about it. The feline needs to be taken care of after all. I took a deep sigh and entered the kitchen. Ena was making her food already. I didn't mind her and started seeking in the fridge. What do cats usually eat?

"Where have you been?" Ena asked while waiting for her eggs to finish cooking. She put down her phone and looked at me.

"With my friends group. It started raining so I stayed at the train station" I skipped that cat part. She'd probably get all excited about the kitty in my room. I don't have energy to deal with two kids. Not now.

"It's still raining, isn't it?" She continued the conversation and then looked outside of the kitchen window. The weather was still unpleasant. Harsh rain, darkness, and even lightning. The cat is probably scared of the loud noises. I need to see them quickly.

"It is" I responded quickly and noticed that she had a ham pulled out. Probably to make sandwiches. The butter, ham and cheese showed that she indeed wanted to make some bread. "Mind if I steal a slice or two?"

I closed the fridge and walked closer to the girl. She stepped back to make me enough space to take the food. I took two splices in my hand and when I was about to leave I heard her sniff. Shit!

"You stink" She made a harsh claim. Her arms crossed and she looked at me with something between irritation and playfulness. "You know that showering is a thing, right?"

"Excuse me?" I shared an annoyed glaze with her. No matter how embarrassing it might be but I had to agree. Mixing rain and wet cat probably wasn't a good smell... It still made me a bit too aware of the heaviness of my body.

"You smell like a wet cat" She giggled and walked to put her eggs on her plate. It was a perfect timing to run away from her. When she turned around, I quietly left the kitchen and went upstairs.

I sighed in relief and quickly ran to my room. Finally escaped, she didn't find out about the kitten in my room. That's good. Snapping out of my thoughts, I grabbed the door handle and entered my room. The cat was already at my bed, nuzzling into my matters with its wet fur.

"Hey, buddy! Don't get so comfortable! Ugh" I growled and took the cat in my hand. It looked at meowed at me. How can a cat be such a cutie. With a guilty sigh I put it on a ground and gave it a ham i brought.

The orange one sniffed the food and started eating. At least it's eating, good. I sighed and grabbed a towel from my chair. Dunno why it was here but I used it to wash the water drops on the ground. I need to dry that cat as soon as it finished eating. They can't run around while looking like a wet rat.

Also I need to think what's next... I don't think my parents will agree to keep a cat in our house. At least we've never had a pet before. I doubt that they will agree tho. Probably giving it to animal shelter wasn't that bad idea... The feline could get adopted and live happy life... Yet still, thinking about giving the cat away wasn't pleasant thought.

"Im coming in" Ena's voice called from outside. When I heard those three words I knew that it's the end. I have almost no time to hide the cat... The doors already started to open. I sighed and waited for the impact. "I brought you some eggs... A cat!?"

"Yes. Please don't get all excited though... Im thinking to give the cat to the shelter after the rain ends" I quickly made sure that Ena wouldn't get too attached. If she does, then she will fight with teeths and fists to make this cat stay.

"Animal shelter!? Are you stupid? Conditions there are horrible! Im not letting you torture a kitten like that!" Ena ran to the cat and sat next to it. It jumped a bit and looked shocked that someone new appeared. "Heeey cutie!"

"I know they aren't the best but we have no other way out. Do you really think that father will agree to have a cat running around?" I exactly knew what her answers will be tho. She will get that cat to stay with us, will she?

"I don't care about his opinion. Anyway, we should give that cutie a name!" She gently went her hand through their fur and watched how they ate their ham. "Maybe Luna, no... Too basic name. We need something brilliant! Hm, Melody maybe"

"Still pretty basic name" I rolled my eyes and then back at her. Ena just huffed at me and decided to ignore me completely. At this point Im not even surprised.

"So Melody. You are so cute! Even if you are a ginger cat" She looked playfully at me and then came back to the cat.

"Should I feel oppressed? Cuz I am not"

"Im just stating facts" Ena giggled and watched the cat eat the food before her. She quickly pulled out her phone and started making a cute cat photos.

I only let out a short sigh and went to take the plate Ena brought to me. She was annoying sometimes but I still know that she cares. I sat on my chair and started eating, sometimes sneaking glances at them. The cat already stopped eating and started nuzzling to Ena's hand.

"How did you find her? She didn't have any collar when you found her?" Ena finally raised her gaze from the feline and looked at me.

"I found it on the sidewalk. It was in a box without anyone around so Ive decided to take it in. Leaving a cat in a harsh weather would be cruel, right?"

"You're right. Then you're homeless? Awh! Who would leave such a cutie alone. Monsters!" Ena looked back at Melody, or whatever she called the cat, with a worried gaze. Her both hand worked on petting it.

"No idea. As I said, it was completely alone when I first found it. Nothing that can indefinite the owner"

"Monsters! I would never leave such a kitty in a wild!" She stayed in her own world, completely mesmerized with the cat before her.

"Do you even listen to me..?" I answered back with a sigh. For now I will just let her be and enjoy the cat. Watching her having such a fun with the feline was making me a bit jealous but I just brushed it off, focusing on my eggs. They weren't bad in taste actually.

I watched them just enjoying each other touch. Ena's phone light up and I couldn't help but sneak a peek. Not that Im that interested, it's probably nothing interesting.

Amia: Kitten!! How cute
K: It's cute indeed

Two messages popped but Ena seems to not care, or more, didn't notice them cuz she was so focused on the kitty that she didn't even look at her phone anymore. Such a silly girl...

We just stayed like this for a moment. I focused on my food and on my own phone while Ena played with the cat. It was definitely getting a bit sleepy. The girl only giggled and continued petting it

"Isn't she the cutest cat on earth?" She said as she squeezed her voice while talking to me. It was a bit annoying but I didn't say a word about it.

"Probably" I said shortly. I didn't think that might be the case but if I say no then she will try to argue with me. This answer should satisfy her enough.

"Probably? That's all you have to say? Tch, you have no taste" She quickly waved her hand and looked back at the kitty that keept her eyes closed. "Who's a good kitty? You are!"

I rolled my eyes again and looked back at my phone. Toya was texting me if I came home safe. I smiled a bit and quickly texted him back. Im glad that he cares about me.

"I wonder when mom comes back home" Ena stabilized voice and sat against my bed to have better view on me. Her brown eyes walked between me and Melody.

"Probably soon. It's late after all" I turned off my phone and meet her eyes. The cat slowly hopped on Ena's laps and laid against her stomach. At first she looked shocked but then let out a happy giggle.

"See? Isn't she cute!? Give me that phone" She quickly withdraw her hand and I handed her a phone. Ena quickly turned on camera and started taking million photos.

"You are obsessed with photos, aren't you?" I shocked my head in disbelief. Maybe Im just a man and doesn't understand all girly stuff but taking so much photos at once? Isn't it exhausting?

"You just don't get it"

"I don't"

We stayed in peaceful silence for a whole. Melody slept on Ena, soaking her a bit. The girl seems to not mind it. I swear I will never understand that girl...

After maybe 10 minutes in complete silence that was broken just by our breaths we heard the doors opening. That means only one thing. Mom has came back. Ena's eyes almost started glimmering and she heard that. She gently took Melody in her hands and almost ran out the room.

I didn't bother to follow her but she left the doors open so I could at least pick up a bit of the conversation. From what ive heard our mother wasn't optimistic at first but more Ena insisted more positive her tone got. Soon she ran back into my room, the cat woke up from their conversation.

"Mom has agreed. But we need to take care of it as well as we can. Tomorrow we will go and get some cat stuffs like bed and food" She was talking like a little kid that got her favorite toy after years of begging. The way her eyes glimmered... It was cute.

"You will take care of it. Im still fan of the animal shelter option" I smiled, trying to rage bait her a bit. I do it often yet she always fails for it.

"Hey! Don't say that! I know you want Melody to stay with us. You're just too stubborn to confirm it" She growled, I guess my rage baiting worked as well as I planned to.

"Maybe. Who knows" I giggled and looked at the cat in Ena's hand. Maybe having a cat isn't that bad in the end...
