Work Text:

Scar is an allay.

And he loved the sky,
He loved the day and the Sun.

But he also loved the night.
With its dazzling stars and shimmering moon.

Seeing them brightened his soul.

Made him want to sing and dance.

But one thing saddened him about the night sky.

Scar best friend was a warden.
Cub was blind.
And couldn’t see its beauty.

The allay had tried to describe it before.

But his words fell short of its splendour.

Cub didn’t seem to mind that he couldn’t see the night sky, but only because he couldn’t remember what it was like back when he human.
Or whatever creature he was before he became a warden.

There was so much beauty that was lost on Cub.

And it made Scar sad to think of.

“Cub?”

The Warden hummed inquisitively, “yeah Scar?”

“Would you ever want your sight back? If you could.”

Cub hummed once more
“Maybe, but it would depend on the cost-“

“What do you mean?”

“Well for ever action taken, an equal or opposite reaction must occur. So it depends on the cost.”

“What if there wasn’t a cost.”

“There always is. Just like a totem Scar…”

Scar’s heart stuttered,
Right….
Totems of undying were made using converted Allay souls…..

It was incredibly powerful

At a terrible price.

“Oh-“

Cub hummed soothingly “I know I’m missing a lot of the stuff you love Scar… and I’m sorry that I am…. But I’d rather be blind all my life than have my sight and regret it.”

“I guess that makes sense…. Can I still describe the night sky to you?”

“Sure, I’d love that Scar.”

“Alright, so most of the time the sky is black, but when there aren’t any other lights on the ground, it’s full of inky blackish colours too!!-“ as Scar described the Sky

Cub scooped up the allay and held him in his hands.

I’m his mind.

He might never understand what the night sky looked like.
Every time Scar described something new.

But every time he did, the Allay lit up.
His soul beaming.

And Cub could see that much.

So in a strange way,

Cub loved the night sky too.

Even blind

It brought him joy.
