Chapter Text
Skizz could tell when Impulse fell asleep in his hand.
The Human’s index finger pressed firmly against The anxious borrower’s chest.
His heartbeat going from an unhealthy humming bird rhythm to a much more settled pace.
Skizz wouldn’t lie and say it didn’t bring him comfort to hold his best friend in such a way.
So much of his body felt as though it betrayed him.
Either no longer responding correctly, or just straight up too painful to move.
“Skizzy?” Scar said to Skizz’s right.
He glanced over at his friend, swollen eyelids forcing him to squint.
“Yea Scar Face-?”
“Could you tell us what happened?? The docs kinda did, but-“
“They don’t really know the details, only that you got ran into by a bus and…. Came out of it better than most would have.”
“Oh-… yeah sure.” Skizz rested his eyes shut once again, gathering the energy.
He ran his thumb gently across Impulse’s back and the borrower sleepily nuzzled further into his hand, stirring his heart forward
“I had been driving to your place Scar- and I got… em… a tiny bit lost-… don’t tell Impulse” Skizzy tried to go for a smile- play it off as a joke.
But neither Zed, Scar or any other borrowers laughed.
His smile must’ve looked worse than he thought.
Skizz cleared his throat before continuing on, “anyways, I had been thinking about stuff and-… well I could have sworn the light was green… but next thing I know there are headlights to my left and… loud noise… and then well I kinda just blacked out for the rest of it-“
Skizz forced his eyes back open to look at his friends,
Scar looked painfully worried while Bdubs had moved from his front pocket to his shoulder.
His tail entwined with a lock of Scar’s hair for balance.
Meanwhile Zed and Tango seemed to be sharing worried looks
Skizz just sighed- tilting his head to brush the top of Impy’s head with his cheek.
His best friend’s soft breathing a calming reminder to the human that he could still be a place of comfort, and not just stress.
“I’m sorry I’ve become a liability guys… I really didn’t mean to ruin our evening like this.”
“What?! Skizz!” Scar sounded almost hurt.
Skizz tilted his head back to look at Scar, “this was just avoidable if I had been paying attention- none of you can say I’m wrong.”
“False,” Tango’s voice cut over his own. “We don’t know exactly what happened yet- you really could’ve seen a green light-“
“I doubt a bus driver would try to run a red Buddeh…. I’m just lucky to be alive…”
At these words Impulse’s tail came to tightly wrap around Skizz’s Index finger.
The raised voices probably woke him up a bit.
“I agree with Tango, Skizz” Zed chimed in “if you saw a green light, then you probably saw a green light- the other driver could have been trying to sneak by on a yellow-“
“I don’t know what you want me to say guys…”
“You’re not a liability Skizz-“ Scar answered, “either way, it was a mistake- you can’t blame yourself like this- what would Impulse say?”
Skizz just sigh- “he’d scold me, like the rest of you are doing right now-“
Impulse’s tail squeezed his finger in confirmation, and Skizz couldn’t help but smile.
“Yeah he’s really good at that.” Bduds complained from Scar’s shoulder.
Skizz was about to reply, smile on his face when a knock sounded at the door.
His heart rate spiked, swiftly bringing his hand that held Impulse over to Zed.
But the borrower wouldn’t let go of his Human’s hand, tail still tightly wound around his finger.
Tango and Bdubs had already hid themselves but when the door creaked open and Impulse still refused to let go of Skizz,
Zed ended up cupping his hand over the borrower, lacing his fingers with Skizz’s right before the nurse came back in.
“Hey gentlemen, I just came to say that visiting hours are over and- oh! You’re awake!- that’s really good.”
Skizz just slowly nodded the information like molasses in his brain.
His friends had to leave??
Suppose he couldn’t ask them to stay-
It would be really inconvenient, and uncomfortable…
“Can’t we stay?” Scar pleaded, “it’s not even 5 yet-“
“I’m sorry- but, friends can’t stay.”
“We’re family-“ Zed butted in, his normally shy demeanour replaced by pure stubbornness
“Really? You just don’t seem-“
“We’re adoptive brothers- now can you please just let us stay.” Scar added.
Skizz was almost proud, they were better at lying to hospital staff than they were at playing poker.
But he couldn’t force them to stay-
They both still had work.
And he was decently sure Scar wouldn’t fair well in these conditions.
“I’ll be okay guys…. You two need to get back home and get… rest…”
“But Skizzy,” Scar argued
“Scar-…. Both of you should go back home, grab your stuff, and head back to my apartment- I’ll cover the taxi…”
Skizz nudged Impulse with his pinky trying to convey the message to his friend to go with Zed.
But still the borrower was stubborn and refused to let go.
“Skizz-“ Zed started “we can’t just leave you here-“
“You won’t- you all can see me tomorrow.” Skizz emphasized the words hoping Impy could understand he was also trying to talk to him.
Slowly the borrower let go of Impulse’s hand and Zedaph scooped him up and Tucked him in the big pocket in his pink hoodie.
“You’ll call us if you need right?” Zed asked
“I-… uhh.. I would but I don’t have my phone-“
“Oh right-“ Scar muttered, “well I could leave mine here… then you could just call Zed.”
Skizz slowly nodded “yeah okay- thank you, I love you guys…”
“Love you too Skizzy-“ Scar said, leaving his phone the the side table before rolling away from the bed
Zedaph just nodded, glancing to the nurse who had plastered on a smile and clasped her hands together.
“Yeah- love you Skizz,”
From there they were ushered out, still feeling uneasy but understanding Skizz’s sentiment.
Now just leaving Skizz with the nurse,
“I’ll call the doctor here to come check on you sir- should only be 45 minute wait.”
Skizz frowned, so now he had to wait
But she just got rid of his friends….
Great…
It was like a warm hug…
Once the nurse left Skizz just stared at the clock on the wall, mourning the loss of Zed and Scar
Tango and Bdubs
And of course Impulse.
He wished life had a redo button.
So he could just time with his friends instead of this stupid place…
But he unfortunately didn’t have a redo button
And all he could do was stare at the clock and wait.
