Nile was eating cornflakes when Nicky sat down beside her with a mischievous smile on his face.
Nicky: "Whatever happens next, just play along, okay?"
Nile nodded, not knowing what would happen, but when she heard Joe scream, she knew the reason for the scream had to be something Nicky had done. Five seconds later, Joe stood in the kitchen and looked like he was having a panic attack.
Joe: "I am telling you, Nicky. I am turning grey-haired. Look."
Nicky looked up from the magazine he had taken from the stack on the table and saw Joe pointing at his curls.
Nicky: "I can't see anything. Do you see anything, Nile?"
Nile shook her head.
Joe: "Then take a closer look."
Joe actually placed his head on the table and pointed at something grey on his head.
Nicky: "You are being paranoid as usual, because we both know our hair won't turn grey as long as we can't die."
Joe stood up again, and he and Nile exchanged a look between them.
Nile: "Your Hubby has a point."
Joe groaned before he started pulling at his curls to have a closer look.
Nicky: "May I remind you that you don't have the time for that, Joe? You invited me out for lunch and a fun weekend, and if you are late again, you won't get sex for the next year."
Joe stopped pulling at his curls.
Joe: "I will be ready on time. All I need is to shower."
Nicky: "If that is true, then why are you standing there?"
Joe kissed Nicky before he left the kitchen.
Nile: "What was that about?"
Nicky stood up and looked out in the hallway to make sure Joe was indeed in the bathroom before he answered Nile.
Nicky: "I love pranking Joe, and what you just saw was one of my oldest pranks."
Nile: "One of your oldest pranks is dyeing Joe's hair grey?"
Nicky: "I don't use dye, but ashes. We both know how deep Joe sleeps, so once in a while, I take some ashes before smearing it out on a curl or two. Then all I have to do is wait until Joe looks at himself in a mirror and watch the panic unfold."
Nile laughed.
Nile: "That is a genius prank, because we both know how Joe acts around his curls, and the evidence gets washed out. How long have you been using that prank?"
Nicky: "Since the 15th century. I only use the prank once or twice every century. And always whenever we have a lot of downtime."
Nicky watched Joe leave the bathroom.
Joe: "I will be ready in ten minutes."
Nicky: "If that happens, I know miracles do happen."
Joe: "Very funny."
They exchanged a smile, and after a kiss, Joe disappeared into the bedroom.
Nicky: "Can I count on you not telling Joe about the prank?"
Nile: "Hell, yeah. I love seeing Joe panic for no reason."
Nicky: "Thanks. So, what are your plans now that you are alone today?"
Nile: "Oh yeah, I forgot you are spending a weekend at a hotel. I am going to take full advantage of having the bathroom alone, and then I will watch a lot of telly while eating pizza."
Nicky: "Sound fun."
Joe joined them in the kitchen with his weekend bag. Nicky looked at his clock.
Nicky: "Twelve minutes, so it isn't today that miracles will happen."
Joe kissed Nicky.
Joe: "It is good that I find you so funny."
Nicky: "Thanks."
Joe: "And about before. Sorry that I panicked over nothing."
Nicky: "That is okay. Let me get my weekend bag, and then we can leave."
Nicky left the kitchen.
Joe: "I know you have figured out that I know Nicky is pranking me, so please don't tell him anything because I love everything he does so much, including the pranking."
Nile: "I have no idea what you are talking about."
Joe picked up his weekend bag before he kissed Nile on the head.
Joe: "Thanks for keeping both our secrets. And to show you my gratitude, I will get you the handbag you want."
Nile: "Thank you. Have fun. You deserve it."
Joe then joined Nicky in the hallway and they left hand in hand, leaving Nile back alone in the safe house, which she took full advantage of.
