Work Text:

Starflight had finally arrived at the Night Kingdom. He was staying in a house near Fierceteeth’s house. Fierceteeth was showing him around the partially restored settlement. She walked him around introducing him to different dragons working on different projects. He’d meet a lot of new dragons and some old faces as well.

“And here’s our last stop.” Fierceteeth said, stopping suddenly. “I did some exchanging of letters with the Dragonets of Destiny and they said this would be the project you’d be most interested in. Can you please hold your hand out in front of you?”

Starflight hesitantly reached out. His talons brush across a smooth surface.

“What is it?” He asked about feeling around the smooth surface.

“Well right now we are outside an ancient Nightwing library. What you’re touching is the base of a statue we’re going to build you right outside of it. Past the statue is the scroll restoration project, your friends said if you had to have a statue built it’d be somewhere near scrolls.” She answered, putting a talon on his shoulder. “Now tell me, who’s your favorite biological sister?”

“You.” He said and she pulled him in for a hug. “Not that there’s any competition.” he whispered under his breath.

“What was that you twerp?” She teased giving him a noogie on his head.

“Nothing! Stop that, I'm injured!” He yelled jokingly and she let go of him. “Was that necessary?”

“Almost certainly.” She answered. “I missed seven years of that, and now I have to make up for it.” She started walking into the library pulling Starflight along by the hand. She opened the door and Starflight was immediately assaulted by the smell of dust. “Most of the work here is transcribing the scrolls here and they’ve finished. I know you can’t exactly see it, but for reference it took all fifty Nightwing scribes to copy down every scroll in here in two months. I don’t have an exact number on how many scrolls were in here but it was certainly in the thousands.”

Starflight started to feel the walls and shelves. He noticed engravings near each scroll. “Oh it’s…”

“Blind accessible? Yes, I asked them to do it when they were physically restoring the building.” Starflight kept feeling around, walking by the wall until he found a door.

“What’s behind here?” He asked, turning back towards Fierceteeth.

“We don’t know.” She answered. “The door’s locked and in case there’s important papers behind there we didn’t break down the door in fear of damaging them.”

Starflight considered that for a second. He couldn’t see the future anymore. What was behind this door was a complete mystery.

That's…

Starflight was excited. He didn’t know what was behind the door which meant it wasn’t important enough to remember when he could see the future so it wasn’t going to be anything amazing.

He had inserted a talon into the keyhole and popped it open.

“How’d you do that?” Fierceteeth asked, coming up next to him.

“I can’t see the future anymore, but I can still feel the future and use my other senses in the future. I just observed every future where I inserted my talon into the lock and found the movement to open it.” He lifted his arms towards the door. “After you.”

Fierceteeth twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open. She gasped in surprise about what was inside. Starflight followed after her feeling around the walls. The wall was covered in a giant corkboard with papers that were connected by string.

“It’s the room of a mad dragon!” Fierceteeth exclaimed.

Strings no… threads

“What in the Three Moons is the Seawing massacre?” Fierceteeth asked.

3005 AS

“About 2,000 years ago a Seawing Prince who was an Animus went mad and slaughtered most of his family.”

“Terrifying.” She approached Starflight. “There are things referencing a Seawing envoy, A war with Icewings, and a Queen Anaconda.”

Someone with immense knowledge of future events.

“Starflight, what do you think this is?”

“Notes written from Darkstalker's time.”

“Darkstalker!” Fierceteeth yelped in surprise. “What does this have to do with the Darkstalker?”

“Well Nightwings originally abandoned this kingdom in fear of Darkstalker. They also stopped hatching eggs under full moons. That’s how I got my powers.”

“How do you know this?”

“Darkstalkers alive.”

“What?!”

“He’s trapped and he’ll stay that way. But, in certain futures he gets free and leads us back here. Now I’m not going to let him free because he is a genocidal maniac. But the only account of the ancient Nightwings was him from a future that’s not going to occur. This,” He said, holding his hands out. “And the scrolls in there are the only preservation of our history that I didn’t get from a sociopathic immortal genocidal freak. These were all written by Clearsight.”

““What?!”

“Long story short, she was like me.” He explained. “She could see every future.”

“What?!”

“Listen, the point is you’ve done a great thing and I’m going to put you on the Nightwing throne.”

“What?!”

“I’ve got to prepare for the council meeting tonight. Okay bye!” He said leaving Fierceteeth alone in the library. He took off arriving back at the house he was staying in with Fatespeaker. “Fatespeaker! I’m back.”

“Welcome back, did the tour go well?” She asked, looking up from a scroll.

“Oh, it was very informative.” He spoke, approaching her. “Listen I’ve got to crash the council meeting they’re having tonight and I want to really look the part of someone who can crash a council meeting.” He lifted a bag he was carrying. “In this bag is a ton of jewelry that I bought in the market today. I would like you to drape me in jewels of your choosing from this bag.”

Fatespeaker made a noise that Starflight had never heard before. Then she grabbed him by the wrist and dragged him into another room. She then spent the next hour mixing and matching different jewels on Starflight.

“Okay, I’m finished!” She said, Moving Starflight somewhere.

“If you’ve set me in front of a mirror I can’t see myself.” He said, pointing towards his blindfold.

“Oh sorry! There are golden chains draped across your horns and snout and I’ve given you a set of emerald earrings. Don’t worry, you look very gaudy and official.”

“Thank you Fatespeaker. I’m going to go start trying to put my sister on the throne.” Starflight waved goodbye and began to make his way to the palace. The guards let him in without question. Every Nightwing knew who he was and they would not question him for he was the only among them with powers. The doors of the Council were supposed to be sealed until the session was over. Starflight could hear the loud bickering coming from inside. He walked right inside with no interruption from the guards.

“Who dares?” Called one of the councilors from his seat in the ancient audience chamber. The chamber fell silent as Starflight felt the attention from every councilor's thoughts fall on him.

“My name is Starflight, son of Morrowseer. I’ve come to claim my inherited place as Head of this Council. And due to our Articles of Parliament Article One Section Two Clause Two (if the Queen is unavailable the Head of Council will temporarily take on the role of Queen during council sessions until the Queen is available again.” He announced moving forward and sitting on the Queen’s throne. “Now, onto the topic of the new Queen.”

“Your honor.” Called out one of the Councilmen. “We’ve collectively decided that Greatness should take the throne.”

“What do you mean collectively?” Yelled another Councilman. “We can’t convince her to take the throne so we should be looking at other possible choices. Someone like Eclipse.” Bickering broke out throughout the room again.

SILENCE !” The council quieted at Starflight’s command. “How about instead of focusing on trying to force someone onto the throne who doesn’t want it, or installing puppets to push agendas we take a look at actual qualification and merit with our people.” and with that Starflight started the long and arduous process of selecting a Queen.
