Marcille probably should not be surprised to find her girlfriend still in bed. In fact only a short thatch of blonde hair was even so much as hinting at the fact that somewhere beneath the blanket her girlfriend was lying.
The air in the room was sticky, as Farin had not left the window open overnight. Marcille did not understand this kind of behavior. She could sleep in as well, but in the end one should be orderly in the way one went about one’s life.
“What are you doing in bed still?” she asked, going over to the window. She opened the curtains, before opening up the windows.
“Eeek!” That was the sound coming from under the blanket that was pulled just a bit higher a moment later. It was surprising that this was even possible.
“Come on, Falin.” Marcille sat on the side of the bed now, grabbing her girlfriend by the shoulder – or that part underneath the blanket which she assumed to be the shoulder. “It is almost noon. You missed breakfast.”
“I am tired still,” it came from under the blanket. “You should join me. Cuddle.”
“I cannot. I have a job to do. I am the king’s advisor, remember? Your brother will get into trouble without me!”
“It’s winter,” the answer came. “Not much trouble to get into.”
“This is Laios we are talking about.”
“Hmm.” There was a silence from the fort of pillows and blankets. “He is not that bad.”
Marcille gave up on this avenue. She knew that Falin and Laios had a special bound that reason most certainly could not explain. “Come on now, you should eat something. Imagine what Senshi would say if he knew you missed out on breakfast.”
“I think I am hibernating,” Falin muttered.
“Humans do not hibernate. I am fairly sure of that.”
“Well, humans do not have feathers.” Failn’s voice was barely more than a whisper. “Maybe dragons hibernate. And it is just a thing I kept. It is winter. It is cold. I do not like the cold.”
“Huh.” Admittedly that made Marcille consider. She knew Falin for a while now. And Falin had never been that bad with winters. Not to mention that Falin and Laios originated from the colder lands up north. So technically one should think the rather mild winter here should be easy for Falin to take.
But dragons did not hibernate. Did they?
Actually, Marcille was not fully certain about it. Did dragons hibernate? She had read something about it. She must have. But in the end monsters and dragons were not that interesting to her. Laios would know, but she would absolutely not ask him. If she asked him she would get at least an hour worth of tangents about dragons, what they ate and how they behaved. Possibly including different kinds of dragons.
But then again, she did remember. She did remember that they had hoped to find Falin’s body intact almost a month after she had been eaten, due to the slow metabolism of a dragon. So maybe indeed dragons hibernated?
She sighed, gently pulling back the blanket a bit. “I feel like you should eat still.” Gently she caressed Falin’s hair. “At least just a little, hmm?”
“I just wanna sleep.”
Marcille sighed. “I make you an offer. We can cuddle for a bit, but then we both get up and participate with the lunch.”
“Hmm…” Tired eyes were looking at her from just over the edge of the blanket. Then Falin finally gave a sigh. “Fine.” She lifted her blankets – there were at least three of them – far enough for Marcille to climb underneath them.
It was warm underneath. Quite warm, because Falin was a warm person. Literally. Not figuratively. Though she was also soft.
Falin pressed her forehead against that of Marcille, smiling as she did. “See? It is a lot better here in bed.”
“My hair is going to be messed up,” Marcilla muttered, realizing it too late. “It is gonna be a bother to redo it.”
“We could still just cut it short.”
Marcille just sighed. “Yes. Maybe.”
In the end, some part of her wished she could take the things quite as easy as Falin could. To be that relaxed about things. But maybe that was why they were good together. Because one would do good for the other. Falin should worry a bit more from time to time – and Marcille needed to relax. Something… Yes, something like that.
She should be going. She should take care of Laios. After all he needed someone sane around, who could make sure he would not get into more trouble. Kabru was there, too, but at times she was not fully certain whether the two of them made each other better or worse.
Falin’s hand was now caressing Marcille’s hair, as the other woman pressed a kiss onto Marcilla’s cheek. “Do not worry so much. The world is not going to end.”
“To be fair, it almost did end not too long ago.”
“See? The chances are fairly small that we would be in for two world-endings in our lifetimes, right?”
“I mean… You know I am going to… live… very long.”
“I do not think that nearl-world-endings even happen as often as a millennium. So I think you are going to be fine, right?”
“Right.” Marcille gave a sigh. She took Falin’s hand into her own. Warm. Warm and soft. And after everything so familiar.
Warm. Warm like living flesh. Because once more she was alive. As the world had not ended. At least that far she was right.
Marcille allowed herself to breathe. In and out. Slowly. Very slowly. She knew she was worrying too much, but then again she felt like she needed to be responsible. Someone had to be, right?
“Admittedly,” she muttered, “staying in bed with you is kinda nice.”
“It is, isn’t it?” Falin giggled just a bit. She pressed another kiss onto Marcille’s cheek. “Just stay.”
