Misunderstood

Summary:

A poem that explores my fear of being misunderstood.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

I once dreaded people misunderstanding me
To the degree that each clarification was a desperate plea

For the truth in me to be seen
Especially when my good intentions were mistaken as mean

But in time, I realized
that I could either speak freely, or forever fear being despised

I could be happy, or I could fret that my words weren't right
And it was so hard to talk when my chest was so tight

Instead, I chose my words so well, just to find myself in the same hell
at the end of the road my words paved, I said fuck it, oh well

No matter what, I'll probably be misunderstood anyway
So I won't be tentative anymore, I'll just say what I have to say.

Notes:

One of the lingering side effects of having been a people pleaser in the past is my persistent fear of being misunderstood. It's so hard to overcome.

I appreciate you for reading!
