Through the Haze of Smoke

Summary:

"I can't help but worry about you. I know that the risks were low, but..."

"Risks..." Fire Spirit tried to tilt his head and ended up just lolling it to the side, "I don't have... risks..."

---

(Note: The surgery is not described, this fic takes place post operation)
Wind Archer visits Fire Spirit after a surgery and discovers Fire Spirit's lack of filter is even worse under anesthesia.

Notes:

(This is technically a sequel to my fic "Restless Flame" but you don't need to read that to understand, all you really need to know is Fire Spirit and Wind Archer are dating but haven't said I love you yet, and Fire Spirit has a broken ankle.)

I am so tired from surgery and pain meds but Firewind calls to me... it demands I make Fire Spirit get the same surgery I did...
Fire Spirit is a bit out of character here because of the anesthesia. Although he is recovering from a surgery the surgery in question is not described. It is mentioned that Fire Spirit has an IV in though and thus takes place in a hospital, so just be wary if you dislike medical themes! There's also in the beginning a section where Wind Archer goes over a few "What ifs" that involve death, but those scenarios are not graphic and Fire Spirit is completely fine, it's just Windy being anxious.
I hope yall enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Wind Archer sat in the waiting room, anxiously bouncing his leg. He knew that Fire Spirit would be okay... yet he couldn't help but stress. Every minute, every second, felt like an eternity. Would Fire Spirit be okay? What if he had a bad reaction to the anesthesia? What if the surgeons messed up and he bled out? What if--

"Wind Archer?" A nurse called his name, "Is there a Wind Archer here?"

Wind Archer stood as fast as possible. "I'm here," he said.

The nurse gave a kind smile. "Fire Spirit is awake. You can see him now," the nurse said, gesturing for Wind Archer to follow.

Wind Archer breathed out a sigh of relief as he followed the nurse. Fire Spirit was hooked up to an IV, eyes half closed. He gave a loopy smile when he saw Wind Archer. "Hey! Windy...!" His voice was slurred. He tried to sit up, but he was too weak. The nurse helped him up.

The nurse headed out, leaving the boyfriends alone. Wind Archer pulled a chair closer and sat by Fire Spirit's side, resting a hand on his head. "I'm glad you're okay. I was worried."

"Worried...? Why are you worried...?" Fire Spirit asked, narrowing his eyes. He blinked slowly, clearly out of it.

Wind Archer stroked Fire Spirit's head the best he could, though the flames of his Mohawk made it hard. "I can't help but worry about you. I know that the risks were low, but..."

"Risks..." Fire Spirit tried to tilt his head and ended up just lolling it to the side, "I don't have... risks..."

Wind Archer just rolled his eyes. He knew Fire Spirit couldn't help his loopiness, but it was still amusing. He gave him a kiss on the head. "Try to rest. The sooner you recover, the sooner we can go home," he said. When Fire Spirit just blinked at him, he added, "And when we get home, I'll... let you have as much candy as you want."

That seemed to work. Fire Spirit laid down, which consisted of unceremoniously flopping on his back. As Wind Archer held his hand, Fire Spirit slurred out, "I love you..."

Wind Archer's eyes widened. They had never said that yet... "Fire Spirit..." Wind Archer said. He gently stroked the back of his boyfriend's hand with his thumb. "I... don't think you actually know what you're saying."

Fire Spirit whined incoherently for a moment before he managed to make solid words. "But I love you..."

Wind Archer found it sweet, but he also knew Fire Spirit wouldn't remember this when the anesthesia wore off. He gave Fire Spirit a soft kiss on the cheek. Fire Spirit closed his eyes and smiled. "...Youre not going to remember this later, are you?"

Wind Archer realized Fire Spirit had already fell asleep. He rolled his eyes, yet a smile remained on his face. He knew that caring for Fire Spirit post operation would be hard, but he didn't care. For Fire Spirit, he would do anything.

Anything but admit how much he really meant to him.
