Summary
What began as an ordinary commission to evaluate a carved funerary figure for a private family collection quickly expanded beyond the parameters of folklore or cultural artifact. Dariana Judd, a freelance folklorist known for her exhaustive documentation of ritual objects and ghost-lore, approached the case with the same methodology she applied to dozens before it: field notes, transcription, contextual analysis.
She did not anticipate the object would resist containment. She did not anticipate the house itself would tremble. And she certainly did not anticipate witnessing, with her own eyes, an entity that defied every boundary she had set between story and reality. In the aftermath, Dariana is left confronting an impossible contradiction. An atheist trained to strip belief down to symbol and structure, she has now become witness to something that cannot be reduced to either. Each email in her inbox — another plea for help, another “misbehaving” object — reads differently now. Her detachment is eroding, and the carved figure at the center of her latest case may be less artifact than prison, its silence less inert than waiting.
