Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Manny had convinced him to go to the Strip through MacCarran, and had dragged him through two casinos. They were in the last one ‘the Tops’. He had vanished off with some guy, leaving Boone standing by a casino table like an abandoned dog
Without a dream in my heart
The table host beckoned him to sit down, and Boone tossed down the last of their collective chips. Blackjack.
The cards were counted, and shuffled. Boone doubled down, an attempt to avoid having to play any further rounds. Manny was pretty clear that he didn’t want them leaving with any original chips.
The second hand was dealt. Boone had 20. The man to his left, 17. The woman, 24. The dealer had 19.
“Hm.”
Without a love of my own
Well. That wasn’t the original chips, technically. He collected them all up, hearing the ching-clank of metal falling into a small bag.
Boone took them over to the cashier, dumping the pile down, “NCR, please,” he grumbled.
The Casino was too loud.
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
A melodic voice spoke to him, “you’re from the NCR?”
He looked up, eyes falling onto the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her deep brown eyes shone under the bright lights, her coiled bleached hair framed her mahogany face like a star through a midnight cloud. The silver dress she wore completed the rest of her night sky.
“Huh- uh- yes. First Recon Sniper.”
You heard me saying a prayer for
She looked at him, eyes warm, while her face didn’t move at all, “are you staying on the Strip for a while? Tommy has a show going on, and I’m off in an hour.”
He nodded, “my friend went off.”
“Well, I’ll find you in an hour,” she sounded angelic.
Someone I really could care for
Boone felt a hand on his shoulder, and turned to see her, “I’m Boone. Craig Boone.”
“Pretty name. Craig.” She said it differently, “cray-g”. He liked it, coming from her.
He smiled faintly, “and your name?”
“Carla. Carla Jones.”
As Tommy’s show continued, Carla came further out of her shell, telling Boone all about the New Vegas Strip. He could listen to her talk for hours.
Her arms danced as she talked, and her eyes shone.
He found himself saying more than he had for hours, talking about First Recon, and the farm he grew up on.
She was from Freeside, but a Chairman had met her while she was working at the Casino there, the Atomic Wrangler, and hired her.
The Vegas lights matched her hair.
And then suddenly she appeared before me
After months of visiting the Strip, Boone had a ring.
Vegas was glowing, the azure fountain glimmering in the lights. Carla’s hair, the bleach faded now, matched the clouds within the sky.
As she watched the dancing waters, Boone knelt, “Carla… would you do me the honour of marrying me?”
She squealed, her dark eyes lighting up, “Craig!! Of course!”
She grabbed him into a hug, before he could even hand her the ring.
The only one my arms will hold
The visiting gamblers, Vegas citizens, and monorail riding NCR soldiers were clapping, but all Boone could hear was Carla’s heartbeat.
She broke the hug, and sparkled even more when she saw the ring he was holding, a silver band with a bright red jewel.
A comet belt to her stars.
I heard somebody whisper, "Please adore me"
“And do you, Craig Boone, take Carla Jones, to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“I do.” His voice caught as he answered the King’s question.
“Then you may now kiss.”
The pair melded into one, a kiss sealing them within matrimony.
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold
Boone looked out over Freeside. Carla- Carla Boone, now, was inside, celebrating to her family.
The bright lights of Vegas shone, turning the town into a gorgeous gold.
He felt a hand on his shoulder, and spun. Carla’s natural dark hair was golden under the light’s glow.
Blue moon, now I’m no longer alone
