Work Text:
Sonic was used to Shadow’s cold and distant attitude.
He wasn’t someone easy to deal with, but somehow, through the many times their paths crossed, they had found a way to understand each other. They didn’t talk much, but something in their rivalry kept them close. And although they rarely agreed on anything, there was one thing they shared without trouble: the thrill of speed and competition.
Races between them had become something of a tradition. They didn’t need a reason, just a meaningless argument, a challenging look, and they were ready to run until they were exhausted. For Shadow, these competitions were one of the few moments where he could truly have fun without worrying too much. He’d never admit it out loud, but secretly, he enjoyed Sonic’s presence far more than he was willing to admit.
Today was no exception.
Sonic and Shadow were running as usual, challenging each other once again in a pointless race, just for the fun of it.
Both were on the same path, and during the run, Sonic, in his typical playful attitude, got a little too close, brushing against Shadow’s side in an attempt to overtake him. Although the contact was brief and his expression stayed serious, his heart beat a little faster. Not that he minded, but physical contact always made him a bit uneasy. It was something he tried to avoid at all costs without making it too obvious. When Sonic hugged him “as a friend,” Shadow usually looked away without pushing him off right away. But just when the sensation started to feel a little too nice, he knew it was time to back off.
But this time, he wouldn’t have an escape.
Sonic had noticed that after so many races, Shadow always avoided a lavender field that stretched along the side of the path. Curious, he decided to take advantage of his speed to play an innocent prank.
Just as Shadow tried to dodge the field again, Sonic made a quick move, brushing against him just enough to throw him off balance. Shadow stumbled and fell like a sack of potatoes into the fragrant lavender.
Without stopping, Sonic ran a few more meters before turning with a mocking laugh.
—Haha! Beat you, Shads! — But when he looked back, his smile faded.
Shadow was not there.
Sonic blinked, his breath quick from the race. He looked around, but there was no sign of him.
— Shadow? — he called, a hint of concern in his voice.
Without thinking twice, he dashed back to the lavender field.
When he returned to the sea of purple flowers, he saw something moving slowly, almost writhing. Sonic felt a knot in his chest. Oh no, he thought, fearing his prank had gone wrong.
—Shadow! Shadow! Are you okay?!— he asked.
He rushed toward the figure on the ground, and as he got closer, his face shifted into confusion.
There was Shadow, lying among the flowers, rubbing himself against them with half-lidded eyes and an expression of pure bliss. Sonic blinked, stunned.
—What-?
It was an unusual scene.
He had never seen him so happy. And Shadow was… purring? Unbelievable. The black hedgehog looked completely relaxed, almost like a fluffy kitten under the effect of catnip.
— Shadow? —Sonic asked, leaning toward him with curiosity.
Shadow didn’t respond. Instead, he rolled onto his back, rubbing his cheek against the ground with a contented sigh.
—So that’s why you avoided the lavender field?— Sonic smiled awkwardly, crouching down to tap his forehead gently with a finger. — Hey, are you okay?
Shadow blinked slowly, as if waking from a dream. Then he seemed to realize what he was doing, and with a growl, he pushed Sonic’s hand away and tried to get up in one quick movement. But he immediately collapsed again, scattering lavender petals into the air.
Sonic chuckled.
— Need help, buddy?
—No!
With another growl, Shadow tried to get up again, and this time… he succeeded. He stood, a little unsteady, and shook his legs, brushing off bits of flowers and plants. Sonic blinked, impressed.
—Oh, he actually stood up…— he murmured.
Shadow took a couple of steps with his chest puffed out, but his steps wobbled awkwardly, like a newborn deer. Sonic barely held back a laugh at the sheer effort he put into maintaining his composure. And then...
PLOP!
Shadow fell again, sinking into the lavender with a frustrated growl.
Sonic laughed, crossing his arms.
—Sure you don’t need help?
—I said no!— Shadow snapped, pushing himself up again, only to collapse once more.
The cycle repeated about three more times. Each time, Sonic tried to help him, but Shadow was far too stubborn to accept. Too proud.
Until, after the last fall, Shadow let out a small sob of frustration.
Lying there, buried in lavender, his mind wandered for a moment. “What if I just stayed here forever?” he thought. He couldn’t move, and if he was honest with himself, the scent of lavender was far too pleasant. Maybe… just a little longer.
Sonic, who had been watching the whole spectacle with amusement, was surprised to hear him so frustrated. He walked over, whistling some improvised tune, and with a mischievous grin, he sat down and tapped Shadow’s cheek with a finger.
—Pop.
—Grrr…
Seeing that Shadow could barely move, Sonic didn’t waste the chance to have some fun. He started poking him in different spots, nudging him here and there, until, without meaning to, his fingers brushed his side.
Shadow shivered and let out an unexpected laugh, which he immediately cut short.
Sonic raised a brow. —Oh! You like that, huh? Well, here’s more!
Before Shadow could even protest, Sonic tickled him in the same spot. Shadow burst into laughter, squirming on the ground, unable to defend himself. Sonic had never seen him laugh like that before. His smile was huge, bright, and genuine. Somehow, it made Sonic feel warm inside.
Eventually, Shadow managed to cover his side with a trembling hand and, in a voice softer than usual, said: —Stop…
Hearing such an uncharacteristic plea from Shadow, Sonic just looked at him for a moment.
That day, he probably wasn’t in his right mind. And without thinking too much, he leaned in and took Shadow’s face in his hands. Their eyes met, and the air grew thick.
Shadow saw that Sonic had gotten too close. It was time to run, to get away. But even if he couldn’t make an effort to move… he really didn’t want to.
The cobalt hedgehog gazed at his face, almost trying to think sensibly about what he was about to do, but he couldn’t help following his instincts.
And then, Sonic kissed him.
The touch was soft at first, just a brush, but the heat radiating from their bodies wouldn’t be contained for long.
Shadow gasped against Sonic’s lips, surprised but unable to pull away. The lavender still surrounded him, clouding his judgment. His eyelids drooped slightly and, without realizing it, he tilted his head toward Sonic, responding with a faint sigh.
Sonic felt it. That minimal surrender was the signal he needed to deepen the kiss, his thumb caressing Shadow’s dark jawline, exploring the softness of his lips with unusual tenderness. Shadow shivered under his touch, his breathing turning uneven, and for a moment, it seemed he had forgotten everything that had worried him from the start.
When Sonic pulled back just a little, he saw Shadow’s face completely flushed, lips parted, breathing heavy. Then, with a timid smile, he hugged him.
In the movement, his muzzle brushed Shadow’s neck, releasing a warm sigh against his fur. Shadow’s body trembled slightly. A shiver ran down his spine, and his fur stood on end from the tickle of the other hedgehog’s breath.
Shadow could feel the warmth of their bodies blending together, each heartbeat echoing in the other’s chest. Deep inside, he wondered why he had been so afraid of something like this when, in that moment, he could feel how their hearts were beating for each other equally.
Then, without thinking too much, Sonic climbed on top of him, looking closely at his face.
Shadow was in a completely unusual state. His cheeks were flushed, his eyes half-closed, and his body relaxed. His breathing was calm, and his expression was… sweet. So yielding that Sonic couldn’t help but feel butterflies in his chest. He had never seen him like that before.
Sonic chuckled nervously and asked— Hey… are you really just gonna surrender like that?
The question seemed to snap Shadow out of his trance. The hedgehog blinked rapidly, his expression changing instantly as if someone had splashed him with cold water.
Sonic laughed even harder at his startled reaction.
—Well, looks like you’re not in your right mind, so… I better get you home.
Sonic understood he couldn’t keep taking advantage of Shadow in this state. It wouldn’t be fair to either of them. So, with a playful smile, he got off his stomach and scooped him up without warning.
Shadow growled, but he didn’t have the strength to resist. And though he’d never admit it, Sonic’s warmth was quite nice—and Sonic felt the same.
With a satisfied smile, Sonic dashed off with Shadow in his arms, leaving behind drifting petals and the sweet scent of lavender that had once surrounded them.
The End YwY✨
