"And rely on Junior to feed you? Absolutely not," Akane slid the bowl over to Teru. "Put the peppers in there with a tablespoon of minced garlic and mix."
Teru caught the bowl and looked at him, "and you're not helping anymore because?"
"You're not going to get much help whenever you move out. This is a life skill you should've learned ages ago," Akane gestured to the bowl, "peppers and garlic then mix."

Work Text:

"Just cut the peppers into cubes and set them aside," Akane said to Teru as he seasoned the meat mixture.

School's been out for a few hours now, Akane swung by the Minamoto household to teach the student council president how to cook. He wouldn't normally volunteer to help Teru of all people, but the blonde was fairly nice to him today. His mild dislike for the man could be put aside for now.

Teru followed the order, "what else?"

"Get the buns, cut them, and set them inside down on the frying pan to toast."

"Yes sir," Teru smiled at him, acting all sweet and innocent as he turned the burner on.

"And cut the act, we both know you're a menace," Akane glanced over to him, assessing whether or not the fire extinguisher was needed. Thankfully, it was not.

The two worked a minute or two in silence before Akane spoke up again, "you seriously can't cook or was Kou exaggerating?"

"Can't cook."

Akane's face scrunched up at that, "that's pathetic."

Teru nearly dropped the knife he was using to remove some lettuce leafs from the head. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," Akane took his hand out of the bowl with the meat and took off the makeshift glove he had on. "You seriously rely on your little brother for food? C'mon, you're a third year, what're you going to do after you graduate? When you go to college?"

"I'm going to stay here. Dad isn't exactly around enough for Kou and Tiara, why would I leave before they graduate?" Teru set the knife down and looked over to Akane, who was leaning against the counter with his arms crossed. "I can do college from home."

Teru put the diced peppers in the meat and some garlic and mixed it all together. He looked back at Akane for the next instruction.

"Make a patty with it and set it on the frying pan, turn the heat up higher than what we used for the bread."

Teru did so. The pan fit two at a time and it took ten minutes to get them brown in the center. He set the patties on a plate with a paper towel on it and fried up more.

The first burger went to Akane, who had it topped with lettuce and some chips and hot sauce. He let out a pleased hum as he ate it, it didn't taste like the trash that Kou kept saying his big brother's cooking was like.

Teru flipped a burger and looked at Akane as grease popped onto his light blue pineapple apron, "well?"

"It tastes delicious."

Teru blinked at that. Seriously? His cooking being good? His? "For real? Lemme try," he took the burger from Akane and bit into it. The taste made his mouth water before he handed it back to Akane and nodded.

Akane frowned as he took his burger back before he took another bite, where Teru had just taken his.

Kou came down the stairs from his room and walked into the kitchen, "what smells good? I told you I'd make dinner when I finished my homework-"

"It's fine, Junior. I made sure it didn't go horribly wrong," Akane held a hand up to reassure the younger boy. "It turned out delicious."

Kou narrowed his eyes and looked at the two older boys for a moment, "okay..." He grabbed a plate and started building his burger.

Tiara came in soon after with her mokke pet, "dinner ready?"

"Yep," Teru said while putting together a slider for Tiara.

"Yay! Big brother Kou's cooking!"

Teru decided to ignore that blow to his ego, "I cooked tonight."

Tiara's face paled before she screamed and bolted for the living room, burying herself under the blankets on the couch.

The hurt was apparent on Teru's face. He looked back at Akane to find the boy's lips pressed into a thin line with barely contained laughter. "Oh come on! It isn't that bad today. Akane helped me!"

Akane went over and grabbed a little piece of the patty and brought it over to the blankets, "come on, just try a little bit and if you don't like it I'll make you a sandwich," he said gently.

A small hand, after a few seconds of nothing, reached out from under the blankets and took the piece from him.

"Hey, no eating on the couch, Dad's gonna kill us if we get grease on it-" Teru said before Tiara popped up from the blankets and took the plate of sliders from Teru.

Tiara and Kou sat at the dining table, waiting for the other two.

Teru then turned off the stove and made his own burger before taking his seat at the table.

Akane watched before standing up and heading to the entry way of the house, "thank you for having me over and for the burger, Teru."

Teru watched before standing up and following, "you're leaving already?"

"Yeah, I don't want to overstay my welcome. Enjoy your dinner," Akane slung his school bag over his shoulder and turned towards the door.

Teru grabbed his wrist, stopping the amber haired boy in his tracks. When Akane looked back at him with a raised eyebrow, Teru spoke, "don't go. You can stay for dinner, there's enough for all of us and more."

"But-"

"Don't even try and argue. You helped with the meal, you should get to eat more of it," Teru gave him that sickeningly dreamy smile of his, the one that made girls and boys at school swoon.

Damn him and his good looks.

"Fine, but you're driving me home."

"Deal."

Akane set his bag back down and made his way to the kitchen to prepare his second burger before sitting down with the Minamotos.

The four talked about school and joked around the rest of the evening.
