If someone had asked Yachi Hitoka who she thought might be a werewolf on the Karasuno Volleyball team, she probably would have guessed Hinata, for his high energy, or perhaps Tsukishima, as werewolves did occasionally have moon based surnames, or maybe Asahi, since he was really tall.
She would not have guessed Ennoshita, or at least wouldn’t have until she got through a fair bit of the team.
She’d known there was another werewolf pretty much from the time she was introduced to the team, since she could smell him all over the gym, which made sense, since given it was the gym they practiced in, he would have spent a lot of time there.
Hitoka had worked out pretty quickly it wasn’t Kiyoko, and wasn’t either of the teachers, but it was a little harder to start narrowing down who it was of the team, since most of the team was pretty affectionate, and thus they all kind of smelled like werewolves.
The question was answered now though, so it wasn’t like all her guessing really mattered now.
“I’d say I don’t suppose I can convince you to keep this secret, but I think we both know that’s not necessary,” Ennoshita said, trying to look not embarrassed about the fact that she’d found him napping as a wolf. He was failing though, which made him seem a little less intimidating.
“No, not really,” Hitoka admitted, giving up on propriety and just plopping down on the ground across from him. “I knew someone on the team was another wolf, I just wasn’t sure who.”
“I had you figured out from the time you started,” Ennoshita admitted, a bit sheepishly. “So, uh, turned or born?”
“Born, but only second generation. You?” Her mom had been turned not too long before Hitoka was born, so she’d been born a werewolf. It was one of the things that led to her parent’s divorce.
“Old family. If you ever want to spend a full moon at my house, we’ve got a huge forest area to run in.”
Hitoka squeaked. “Oh! I couldn’t possibly.” She didn’t want to intrude. And what if she accidentally offended someone! She’d have to change her name and move to Norway! If they didn’t kill her for the offense first! Old families could be really traditional sometimes, and she knew nothing about all that!
“It'd be nice to have a friend over for a full moon, I've never really made any werewolf friends before, unless one counts my cousins.” From his wry look, Hitoka assumed he did not count his cousins. “Really, you wouldn't be intruding,” Ennoshita added.
“That’s not really what I’m nervous about,” Hitoka admitted nervously, anxiously combing through her hair with her fingers.
“If it's about stupid tradition and stuff, they won't care unless you're planning on being my girlfriend.” The exaggerated eyeroll from Ennoshita was a pretty clear signal to how he felt about that. That was fine, Hitoka really didn't want to be his girlfriend either. One, even with knowing he was the other werewolf, he was still kinda scary, and two, Hitoka had figured out a while ago that she wasn’t interested in guys at all.
“No thank you,” Hitoka stammered, blushing when he gave her a somewhat knowing smile.
“I figured. You like Kiyoko, right?”
And now Hitoka's face was rapidly becoming hot enough it felt like she should be steaming. She was probably redder than a tomato. “I-is it that obvious?” She squeaked.
Ennoshita shrugged. “Pretty obvious to me, but I can smell it, and I'm pretty observant anyway, so I'm not actually the best judge on if it's obvious or not. I don’t think anyone else on the team knows or suspects anything, if that's what you're wondering.”
Ah. Hitoka had forgotten that as a werewolf, her scent could give away some of her emotions. Her mom was kind of nose-blind for a wolf, so she wasn’t used to werewolves who could smell that.
“She’s opened up a lot since you arrived, she looks happier,” Ennoshita added after a little bit of Hitoka wishing she could sink into the ground and disappear forever. “You've been good for her I think. I'm glad you joined the team.”
“I originally just came because I was distracted by how pretty she was and accidentally agreed to try it out,” Hitoka admitted quietly, the thing she hadn’t actually admitted to anyone before.
“You stuck around though,” Ennoshita said, shrugging. “And I can't really blame you on that anyway, I've signed at least one form just because she handed it to me while looking particularly determined.”
Hitoka blinked at him. She…hadn’t known he liked girls. Which sounded weird! But he'd never shown any particular interest in Kiyoko.
“I'm not immune to pretty people,” Ennoshita continued, evidently seeing her confusion. “I'm not especially interested in relationships, but pretty people are pretty people.”
Hitoka bit the inside of her cheek before she could blurt out something stupid like ‘you're pretty too’. Objectively, Ennoshita was a pretty man. Not the prettiest she'd ever met, volleyball, along with being full of really tall scary people was apparently also full of really pretty people, so she had met other very pretty men.
It didn’t make her any less of a lesbian to acknowledge that there were pretty men and Ennoshita was one. It was an aesthetic thing.
“That's how I got the Dateko manager's phone number, actually,” Ennoshita added, looking sheepish. “She ambushed me and I failed to say no. I don’t think you've met her.”
The only managers Hitoka had met so far were the other ones at the Fukurodani training camp, so no. “I haven't met any other managers from Miyagi yet. I think Kiyoko wants to introduce me to a few though.” She was really nervous about that. What if they didn’t like her! Would she be deemed bad for volleyball and thrown out?
“Mai has been asking after you, so she's definitely ready to meet you,” Ennoshita said, which was frankly even scarier. What if Hitoka let her down somehow by existing! “Kiyoko may be putting it off for your sake though, Mai is…kind of a lot. At best, people find her intimidating, but most people find her terrifying. I don't find her scary, which I think is why I ended up with her phone number, but you also think I'm scary, so I'm probably not the best judge.”
Hitoka was scared of an awful lot. She’d probably be scared of Mai too.
“Well, slightly back on topic, really, it’d be great to have you over for a moon. We don’t know many werewolves outside of the family, I’m sure my younger cousins would be ecstatic to meet you.”
“Maybe,” Hitoka conceded. The next full moon was…in two weeks she was reasonably sure. She’d have to check her calender. “But thank you for the offer!”
“No problem. If you need anything, including an excuse or someone to cover for you, just let me know. I’m happy to, and if I can’t, I’m sure I can get one of the other second years to do it,” Ennoshita’s smile was wry, but bared his teeth in a somewhat intimidating way. “Even if it’s help asking Kiyoko out.”
Hitoka squeaked in embarrassment, covering her now very red face. “I never said I was going to do that!”
He just laughed. “Well, if you ever do want to, I mean it.”
Hitoka just whined, very embarrassed.
