“Why did you want to meet with me?” Batman says as he takes a seat across from him. They’re at a cafe in Metropolis, the rooftop covered in tables and chairs. Clark sits across from him grinning as he leans on the table, his fingers steepled under his chin.
“Are you okay?”
Batman frowned. “I’m not a vampire, Kal,” he snaps looking up at the sun and down at the table.
The alpha groans. “That’s not what I meant, Bats. I mean, are the pups okay?”
Slowly he watches as Batman settles a bit of tension draining from his shoulders at the mention of his kids. It’s very clear that he cares for them, a lot . Clark hopes that maybe he’d be lucky enough to meet them someday.
Batman glances at a table across from them and sighs. “They’re fine ,” his tone is irritated though his body is relaxed.
The couple sitting there– a man in a leather jacket and skin-tight jeans and a woman with blond hair tugged up in a bun and huge sunglasses sitting on her face wearing a lovely black dress and a red leather jacket, giggle. For a moment he wonders if they were laughing at something Batman said, but it seems not the woman is looking over the menu and the man has a copy of Emma open in front of him.
“Honestly, it might have been nice if the whole stunt had taken longer for them to recover from. Especially with how much trouble they get up to.”
A baby starts crying and Clark glances around Batman to see a red-haired man bouncing a small child in a Robin-themed onesie on his knee. There is a black-haired man across from him wearing a long blue shirt and a black blouse, a sunhat billowing in the breeze on his head. There is a red haired little girl and a black haired little boy next to them. The baby is reaching in Clark’s direction as he cries.
“Shhh, Wade, we can’t go over there right now,” the man, probably the baby’s father, whispers to him, but it’s clear to Clark with his super hearing. “Grandma’s busy.”
Clark frowns. The baby is looking right at Batman as he fusses.
He scans the rest of the people on the rooftop. The only group he hasn’t seen yet is a table with two women– a blond in a trench coat with a black fake mustache on her upper lip and an east-asian-looking woman in a band t-shirt– a boy with fake glasses and a fake nose over his face, two ten-year old boys that look like they could be twins if one was a couple shades lighter or darker brown, and two pale toddlers who are holding opera glasses.
That does not seem normal. He turns back to Batman, raising an eyebrow. “You know, Bats. I’m counting everyone around us and other than the three kids and the red head who looks an awful lot like the old Kid Flash, I think there’s the exact same number of people on this roof as Nightwing said you have children.”
Batman groaned. He lifted his hand up to his face and pinched the bridge of his nose. “You would think for a bunch of vigilates they would be better at blending in.”
“Hey!” the red haired man who Clark is sure must be the old Kid Flash, aka Flamebird, aka Nightwing’s mate and apparently Batman's son-in-law, retorts. “It was not my fault Wade wanted you!”
The baby reaches his hands out in Batman’s direction. With a sigh the dark knight stood up, brushing his cape behind him as he walked over to the baby. Picking him up he held him against his side. Immediately, he started playing with the symbol on his grandmother’s chest, kicking his legs and giggling up a storm.
Clark can’t help the soft coo that escapes his mouth at the sight of Batman smiling down at his grandson.
“For the record,” Batman added staring Clark down. “Signal is on patrol right now. One of these idiots it not my child but your cousin .”
The blond at the table across from them laughs, tilting her head back and pushing her shades up. Without their shape in the way it's clear that it’s Kara. Clark stares at her, shocked. What is she doing here.
She holds up her left hand. “I’m going to be your child soon!” There’s a big ruby on her ring finger, it matches her coat, but also the strand of red in the front of the man across from her’s hair.
Clark turns to Batman. “Your son is engaged to my cousin?”
Batman frowns. “If you want to date me, Clark, you are going to need to show me that you will actually care about my family. I recommend stepping up with Kara first. You’re a good man, but you need to understand that for me, family always comes first.”
The baby in his arms giggles and nods at Clark very seriously, as though agreeing with his grandmother’s statement.
Clark feels a bit of guilt set in. He knows he’s bad at it, family . It’s hard for him to wrap his head around everything some days. He has his ma and pa, but then there’s also Kara and Kon. He doesn’t know what his place in their life should be. He doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do.
He looks up at Batman. “I want to, but I’m not sure how. Can you… can you show me?”
Batman smiles, he holds his hand out and takes Clark’s. “I didn’t know how to at first either, but we can do this together.”
It makes the Kryptonian’s heart skip a beat.
