    The word detonated in her chest.

    Her throat went dry. She should’ve laughed it off. Made it corporate, transactional, anything. Instead the image ripped back, too sharp: his arms around her, the heat of his race suit, the split-second she’d leaned into it before snapping herself back.

    “It was a moment,” she said at last, brittle. “That’s all.”

    “Was it?” His words landed soft but sharp.

    Her heart slammed. She turned away, desperate for distance, staring hard at the skyline like the neon could ground her. “You’re drunk.”

    “Not drunk enough to forget it happened.”
