Work Text:

It was a glittering night in the city of Poppyton, and two lovers were on a date in a fancy restaurant, one that was very high end.

Catnap had asked Dogday on a date here, because tonight was a very special night.

He and Dogday had been dating for a little over 3 years now, and tonight was the night he wanted to take things to the next step.

A few days ago, he had bought a lovely silver ring with a trilliant-cut amethyst, and now he was going to finally ask Dogday to marry him.

And he had a very clever plan to.
(Or so he thought…)

The two had finished their dinner, and were now holding hands, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes.

“This night has been so wonderful, Naps…”
Dogday says. “Thank you.”

Catnap smiles softly.
‘Nothing but the best for my sunshine.’
He signs with his free hand.

Dogday blushes and giggles. “Oh you.”

A waitress then walks up.
“So, did you enjoy your meal?”
She asks.

The two nod.
“Yes, it was delicious.” Dogday answers.

“Wonderful!” She says. “Would either of you like dessert?”

They nod again, Dogday looking at the dessert menu.

“Hmm, I think I'll have a peanut butter sundae.”
He says.

Catnap smiles. ‘And I'll have a caramel ripple sundae.’

The waitress nods. “Alright, I'll have those out for you in a jiffy.”
She says, walking away.

~one jiffy later~

The waitress walks back over, setting the sundaes on the table.

“Thank you!”
Dogday says, picking up his spoon.

The waitress nods.
“No problem.” She says. “Let me know if you need anything else.”
She says as she walks away.

Dogday was about to start eating, when Catnap initiated his proposal plan.

“Hey, what’s that?”

He says, pointing behind Dogday.

Dogday looks behind him, not seeing anything, while Catnap quickly puts the ring into the bottom of his dish.

“Uhh, I don’t see anything.” Dogday says, turning back around.

Catnap shrugs. “Guess it was nothing.”
He says as he starts to eat his dessert.

He watches closely as Dogday does too, paying attention to every bite to see when he would find the ring.

This continues for the next ten minutes or so, Catnap getting increasingly more disappointed with every bite Dogday swallowed. But he figured he'd eventually find the ring in the bottom of the empty dish, right?

Wrong.

When both Dogday and Catnap finished eating, Catnap peered into Dogday’s bowl…

…and it was completely empty.

His spine goes cold.

“Well that was delicious!”
Dogday says, licking the last of the ice cream off of his spoon.

He then noticed Catnap was staring at the bowl.

“Uh, Naps?”
He says. “You okay?”

Catnap looked up, trying to hide the fact that he was about to cry.
“U-uh, yeah! He says. “Sure.”

He stands up from the table.
‘Have we already paid? I wanna go home now.’
He signs, trying to keep smiling.

Dogday gets up too.
“Wait, Catnap… before we leave…”

He steps closer, gently cradling Catnap’s face.
“There’s something I need to ask you.”

“O-okay…”
Catnap says shakily, thinking it’d be “Are you sure you’re okay?” or “How was your ice cream?” both of which he could probably answer.

But then…

Dogday gets on one knee.

Catnap feels his body go hot and cold at the same time.

“Catnap…”
Dogday says as he pulls out a ring of his own.
It was white-gold colored with an emerald-cut orange topaz.

“Will you marry me?”
He asks, stars in his eyes.

Catnap bursts out crying.

Dogday goes cold, putting it away and standing up.

“I-I guess that’s a no then…”
He says, looking away.

Catnap gets angry, stomping on the floor.
“No it’s not that you idiot! You ate YOUR ring!”

Dogday’s face goes blank.

“...what…?”

Catnap growls, grabbing him by the shoulders.

“You ate YOUR ring, you Dum Dum!”
He says. “I tried to hide it in your sundae!”

Dogday feels his stomach.

He then makes the connection, his eyes sparkling.
“W-wait, you mean you were…?”

Catnap rolls his eyes.
‘Yes, Dogday, I was hoping you’d find the ring in the bowl.’

Dogday smiles, embracing him.
“Oh Catnap!”

Catnap hugs back for a few seconds, then gently pulls back.

‘Alright, enough of that, sweetheart.’
He puts his hand on Dogday’s stomach. ‘We gotta get you to the hospital before it slices your stomach open or something.’

Dogday’s face goes pale.
“Okay yeah you’re right.”

~ring transition~

After paying for dinner, both of them quickly went to the nearby hospital, where Dogday was x-rayed.

Indeed, the x-ray pictures showed the engagement ring inside Dogday’s stomach.

Dogday was shocked.

“W-why didn’t I feel it when I was eating…?”

Catnap sighs.
“Probably because you were so focused on the ice cream…”
He says quietly.
“I was hoping that you’d bite into it…”

Dogday gently kisses Catnap on the cheek, making him blush.
“The thought was there, moonlight.” He says. “I appreciate you trying to surprise me.”

Catnap smiles softly.
“Thanks sunshine.” He says.

While they were waiting in the pre-surgery room, Catnap, who was still holding the x-ray, gets up.
“Dogday?”

Dogday looks up at him. “Yeah?”

Catnap smiles.
“I know this isn’t exactly what you or I had in mind… but…”

He gets on one knee, showing him the x-ray.

“Will you be my husband?”
He asks, with pleading eyes.

Dogday giggles.

“Of course.”

He says, leaning down to kiss him on the head.

Dogday then pulls out his own ring again.

“I think I already know the answer, but…”

He offers it to Catnap.
“Will you be mine?”

Catnap smiles, gently taking the ring and putting it on.

“Absolutely.”

He stands up, kissing Dogday passionately on the lips, wrapping his arms around him.

The two now fiancées shared a tender kiss, immensely happy now that they’d gotten all the confusion cleared up.

~One emergency surgery later~

After Dogday was stitched up and the ring was cleaned, Dogday wore it proudly.

“Catnap, it’s so lovely!”
Dogday says from his hospital bed. “Thank you so much!”

Catnap smiles softly.
‘Nothing but the best for my sunshine.’
He signs.

Dogday blushes and swats the air. “Oh you.”

The two then held hands, their beautiful rings sparkling next to one another.

Notes:

Yet another one inspired by an old episode of good mythical morning

(Well technically it was inspired by me driving by wendys which reminded me of that episode but whatever lol)
