Work Text:

For the past few days, Molly whiskers had been having some complex feelings.

Ever since she’d met Lacey Ladybird, the gorgeous bug just refused to leave Molly’s head.
But she didn’t know what to do with these feelings.

She wouldn’t DARE go behind her beloved Catnaps back of course. And she wouldn’t even THINK about trying to steal her brother’s girlfriend.

But what could she do?

No matter how deep she tried to hide her feelings for the bombshell bug, they kept getting stronger and stronger…

Every time she closed her eyes, she could only picture those beautiful red lips, her adorable heart shaped antennae, her gorgeous, sparkling eyes, her gentle curves…

It was driving her CRAZY!

After it’d gotten too much for her, she’d shared her feelings with Catnap.
Thankfully, he was okay with her liking someone else and being in an open relationship, just so long as she still loved him. Which she of course did, thanking him by giving him a million kisses.

But still, she couldn’t get the beautiful black cherry scented bug out of her head.

On this night, Catnap invited Molly to stay over at his place, so now they were both lying in bed.

Catnap was trying to go to sleep, but it was hard when his girlfriend was right next to him, tossing and turning.

“Ugh… it’s no use…”
Molly says, weakly.

Catnap rolls over, facing her.
“What’s no use…?”
He whispers.

Molly sighs, looking at him.

“I CAN’T get that stupid bug out of my head!”
She says. “It’s like she put a curse on me… that I need to break, but I don’t know how…”

Catnap thinks for a minute.

“Maybe you just need to talk to her about it.”
He says.

Molly’s eyes widened.
“W-what…?”

Catnap sits up.
“I mean think about it.”
He whispers.

“Trying to get her out of your head clearly isn’t working, so maybe you should just talk to her.”
He says. “Maybe she’s not all that, and it’ll be easy.”

Molly thinks for a minute.
“You know, that’s not a bad idea…”
She says.

“I think I'll go chat with her tomorrow.”

Catnap smiles. “Good.”

He leans over to kiss her on the cheek.
“Now go to sleep.”
He says, laying back down.

Molly blushes, giggling as she lays back down to cuddle with him.
“You naughty kitty.”

Catnap purrs, nuzzling her head.
“Only for you, cheesecakes.”

~The next day~

Molly was standing outside the oversized pot of marigolds, debating whether or not to knock on the door.

She was just about to, when the door opened.
Lacey was right there.

She was wearing a sun hat, and holding a watering can.
“Oh, hi Molly.”
She says, smiling. “What are you doing here?”

Molly blushes a bit.
“Uh…”
She says, nervous. “I… I need to talk to you.”

Lacey nods.
“Ok hun.” She says, stepping out. “I was just about to water my roses, why don’t you join me?”

“S-sure…”
Molly says, following her to the backside of the house.

Lacey’s little garden was filled to the brim with all sorts of roses, in many different colors.
Classic red ones, pretty white ones, perfect pink ones, sunny yellow ones, and even some rarer colors like orange, a few bicolored ones, and even green.

There were even some naturally growing blue ones.

“Wow, that’s impressive.”
Molly says. “I didn’t even know blue ones grew naturally.”

Lacey giggles.
“Thank you.” She says. “It takes a lot of work and hybridization, but it’s worth it to get them to look this beautiful.”

Molly smiles. “Definitely.”

As Lacey starts watering, she looks at her. “So, what did you want to talk to me about?”

Molly gets nervous again, starting to sweat.
“Uh… well… you see…”

She couldn’t find the right words.

Lacey keeps watering, waiting for her answer.

“Lately… I-i’ve kinda… been… thinking…”
Molly says, slowly getting her words out.

Lacey smirks.
“Thinking about what?”
She says, having a feeling that she already knew the answer.

Molly blushes more, taking a deep breath.

“You.”

Lacey giggles.
“I knew it.”

Molly’s eyes widened.
“W-what…?”

Lacey puts her watering can down.
“I see the way you look at me, sugar plum.”
She says, walking over to her. “You’re not subtle.”

Molly looks down, embarrassed.
“S-sorry…”
She says.

Lacey gently takes her hands.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.”
She says, leaning in to nuzzle her. “I tend to have that effect on people.”

Molly blushes even redder.
“W-woah wait a sec!”
She says, pulling back. “Aren’t you dating my brother!?”

Lacey giggles.
“Oh, my little fishbone’s okay with me flirting around.”
She says. “It’s not like I had a problem when he crushed on yours.”

Molly sighs in relief. “Oh thank 1006…”
He says. “I was worried he was gonna kill me and-”

Then, something clicks in her mind.

“Wait…”
She looked at Lacey.

“What do you mean ‘Crushed on mine…?’”

Lacey’s eyes widened.
“Oh, he didn’t tell you he had a crush on Catnap way back when?”

Molly shakes her head.

Lacey shrugs. “Figures.” she says. “Tutu never tells anyone about his crushes.”

She giggles. “Not like he had a chance with him anyway since he’s all over you.”

Molly looks down.
“Huh…”

Lacey then gently takes her hands again.
“So… how long have you been thinking about me, angel~?”

Molly blushes.
“E-ever since I met you…” She says.

She tries to find the right words.
“Your eyes sparkle like stars… your shell shines like a ruby, and your spots are all perfectly placed, not one is out of line…”

She smiles a bit.
“Y-you’re so beautiful that… that I can’t even describe it!”

Lacey smiles softly.
“I know, sweetie.”
She says. “But thanks for telling me.”

Molly looks down.
“I… sorry.”

Lacey kisses her head, making her blush.
“It’s all good, sweet pea.”

Molly blushes and giggles, smiling at her.

“So… would you, maybe, like to go on a date?”
She asks.

Lacey nods. “I’d love to, hun.”
She says. “When are you free?”

Molly smiles. “This Thursday evening.”

Lacey smiles too. “Perfect.”
She says. “Where do you wanna go?”

Molly shrugs. “Anywhere you want.”
She says. “You could come hang out at my place, or we could take a starlit walk, or we could even go to the city, to have dinner or go bowling or something.”

Lacey looks up, thinking.
“Hmm.”

Then, she gets an idea, smiling.
“I know this great place in the city where we could go and get lunch.” she says.

Molly nods. “Perfect!” She says. “So that’s this Thursday.”

Lacey nods. “Indeed.” she says.

By this point, she had finished watering her rose garden, so Molly walked her back to the front of the house.

“So, I'll see you then?”
Molly asks as Lacey walks up the steps.

The lady bug nods.
“Yup, see ya then, sweet cheeks.”
She says, blowing a kiss to her as she walks in, closing the door.

Molly walks back home in a dreamy haze, you could practically see the hearts floating around her head.
