Work Text:
“Wednesday! Stop ignoring me, I’m seriously going through a crisis this time!” For the third time since Wednesday had woken up from her slumber her roommate was going through a life threatening crisis. “Should I set the lights to blue, or red?” Wednesday closed her eyes and turned over in her bed with her noise canceling headphones going back over her ears. The patter of the storm outside just barely trickling through.
She had zero interest in Enid’s problems. Despite her adamant disagreement, Enid decided to invite some of ‘their’ friends to the dorm room for board games during the storm. Agnes, was a given. Divina was invited as well because Wednesday figured if she had to hang out with people she would want someone else there she appreciated instead of Enid. Then lastly, Xavier was invited because since school started him and Divina were becoming closer friends than any of the other former nightshades. Thing would also likely be participating in whatever board game they chose to play.
After some time preparing for the onslaught of noise and teenage culture in her space, Wednesday took her headphones off and sat up on her bed to see all three visitors already sitting on the floor with Enid setting up a board. She made her way to the little circle and sat down without a word. Thing was across from her, with Enid and Agnes on either side of her. Thankful for the visitors who let her rest for a while longer Wednesday didn’t protest as the game was explained to her.
“Have you guys ever played risk before?” After the response of her peers Enid continued to talk. “My father loved risk, like really loved it. But my mom and brothers would end up getting bored like thirty minutes through so it’d just be me and him. But it’s super fun.” Enid started shuffling cards while Divina pulled out the little plastic carts full of army men. A simple war strategy game, Wednesday was already smiling with the prospect of defeating her peers in a match of wits and warfare.
With the troops being placed randomly with the roll of a dice, Wednesday found most of her troops divided between continents. She had 6 in South America, divided between Brazil and peru, seven in North America all collected in the northern provinces, and seven in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Her biggest competitors are Xavier and Agnes it would seem, with Xavier owning the other half of Australia and all of his other troops placed in Asia. Agnes, similarly, owned the other half of South America, part of Africa and separated men in Asia.
Wednesday lacked the social skill and platform to mark alliances like Enid could, the werewolf already whispering to Divina who was next to her and glancing at Agnes. Perhaps they were planning on taking the girl out of Africa in the first few moves. What Wednesday did have however, were two other players absolutely devoted to her and her subsequent victory in this game. Agnes was already staring at her, and Thing would likely pick up any subtle hints Wednesday would give him. Her perfect plan was already being plotted, and her face was shining that sinister look of doom.

“Agh! Agnes you can’t just give Wednesday your cards! That’s so obviously against the rules.”
“No where in the rules does it say that.” Agnes smiles at Enid, eyes as wide as ever and threatening. “Uhhh yes! I killed your last troops so I get your cards. It’s in the rules.” Agnes let her smile drop and she glanced over at Wednesday who just shook her head. Agnes handed over her 4 cards to Enid and leaned back against her pillow.
Xavier was eliminated almost immediately after Agnes and Wednesday surrounded him on both sides. The issue with having all his troops in one area is that it’s easy to counter if his enemy has a strong alliance. Unfortunately for Wednesday she overestimated Agnes’ ability to understand her intentions and the girl over extended horribly as she fell over herself to please the goth. Additionally, letting herself be thrown out of South America greatly lowered her troop intake.
Xavier yawned and shifted in his pillow seat, leaning back against the floor and lying down while Divina began her turn with her slow and careful consideration. Wednesday had kept an eye on Divina’s play, greatly suspicious of the siren. While Thing had left himself in the middle of the African and Eurasian regions to divide up Divina and Enid, and Enid fought with Wednesday in Asia and North America, it seemed as if Divina was content in Europe. No one took notice of Divina having control over all of Europe, and since she was not fighting anyone in a full extent her troops were fully capable. With an agreement with Enid, she also had a sizable card advantage over Wednesday who needed to use her cards to defend Australia just last turn.
Divina reinforced Greece before attacking Thing’s Middle East, then Afghanistan, he concentrated his troops in India in response to Enid’s aggressive tactics but it left his other land weaker. His assumption that Divina would stay docile was wrong, and now he would be paying the price. With only so much land left.. Wednesday should take him out before someone else could take his cards.
Divina ended her turn with a reposition back to Europe and a draw of a card. Next Thing went, but he seemed to understand Wednesday’s intention because by the end of his turn all his land had only one troop due to his attacks and failures against Afghanistan.

Behind Wednesday’s cris crossed position Agnes and Enid were lying intertwined like a bundle of vines growing into each other, the werewolf had her nose crooked under Agnes’ neck and her head pushing insistently against the other as she spoke about something Wednesday had tuned out.
If it were possible for her to feel any stronger for the siren than she had before, she was certain her heart might give out. Divina was surprisingly competitive, and dangerous too. It was almost hour 3 and they were in a no closer position than they were after Divina betrayed Enid. Divina had all of Europe and Asia, while Wednesday held down the smaller continents. Each turn Divina widened the gap in manpower, cutting off Wednesday’s bonuses just enough to ruin any real army building. It was taking a toll on her own troops though, so the going was slow. Wednesday was struggling to find a way out of this slow and agonizing slide into failure.
The black troops next to blue troops made for a fitting color scheme as Wednesday inspected the board, North America was her main concern, she could not defend it successfully without dividing her power between Alaska and Greenland, but since Divina had owned Europe for so long defending Greenland was a Herculean task. If Wednesday tried Divina’s tactic, attacking into Siam, then her opponent could have a better chance at capturing all of Australia,
Away from the game, Xavier was passed out in the floor. He was, evidently not involved in the cuddling that Enid and Agnes were engaged in but seemed comfortable enough for someone who’d been sleeping on the floor for over 2 hours now.
“You gonna surrender Addams?” Wednesday would sooner torture anyone in this room than admit those words didn’t make her shiver just the slightest. Surrender? Her? To someone she hasn’t even suspected to be this powerful in a strategy based game. “Nobody’s even paying attention,” Divina whispered with a conspiratorial smile. “They don’t have to know. It’ll be only for me.” Wednesday turned her head to the side just enough to get the girls cu- no they were kissing now?- in her periphery. Then she nodded at the Siren gently, closing her eyes for a second. The sound of crashing filled her ears. Xavier jumped up like he was being attacked, and the girls behind Wednesday followed suit.
“Aw shit- sorry I knocked the board over.”
“What!? But- but who won??” Enid crawled over, back into her spot, seemingly ignorant to the longing gaze Agnes was giving her.
“We didn’t finish yet, it looked even”
“A tie.” Wednesday said, her eyes wide and locked with Divina’s. Enid let out a groan, whining as her ears twitched in annoyance. “Ugh.. well, Xavier was last so he’s gotta clean up.”
“What? Since when was that a rule!”
“Since forever? It’s a rule in my house and it’s my board game.”
As the two argued Divina gave Wednesday a little giggle, smiling wide and standing up. “I’m gonna head back to my dorm, Yoko’s been blowing up my phone.” And Wednesday was once again reminded that Divina was not free to desire. “Yes.. I’m going to go too.” Agnes stood up, her frown clear and hands tightly clasped before she turned around and the two girls left the room.
“Wait!- ah damnit.. we were gonna play another game..”
“Another game? After that?”
“Well it wasn’t supposed to take over 3 hours.. you and Divi are crazy.” Enid shook her head as she watched Xavier clean up. “Well Xavier can play with us!” She smiled, filing through her half unpacked box until she produced a deck of cards and sat back down on her pillow. Xavier gave Wednesday a plea for help, in which the girl replied by putting her noise canceling headphones back on and sitting at her desk for writing time.
fun fact portion
I have 12 written sections in this AU (one shots or chapters) and the way I categorize them is by the acronym WEAD. For oneshots that include only Wednesday and Agnes for example would be tagged “WA”. It’s their initials obviously but also, haha weed funny.
