Summary
Sometimes he goes away for a little while, Sidney's Hawkele. Not necessarily in the literal sense—although he's always been flighty and difficult to pin down for as long as Sidney's known him—but in the way that his brilliant, beautiful, tragic mind will often whisk Hawkeye somewhere beyond the present. He's not always willing to share where he ends up, and Sidney does not press. After what they experienced together in Korea, and particularly what Sidney was responsible for bringing to light, new boundary lines were necessary before they could truly move beyond doctor and patient and into a relationship of equals. Hawkeye himself had been the one to lay down the most important limit: if Sidney asked and Hawkeye did not want to share, then Sidney shouldn't force him to do so.
It's a small ask for the incredible privilege of getting to hold Hawkeye Pierce in his arms every night while they fall asleep. But it means that there are evenings when Hawkeye slips into another world, and it falls to Sidney to bring him home.
